I hate when you love a character who’s like a kid or a teenager and they so perfectly capture the flaws and struggles of being that age and not understanding everything fully yet or necessarily making the best choices especially when they’re in a very painful or complex situation and they feel so real and human because of it and then you go online and there’s someone who’s like “they’re DUMB and EVIL and SELFISH because of [important moment in their character arc when they messed up and learned from it or broke under pressure or didn’t have the courage to do an incredibly difficult thing or responded realistically to their truly horrifying circumstances]”

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! the way this show has influenced people's perceptions of children, mostly in relation to their need to self-insert makes me feel insane. you can understand and empathize and relate to kids, but most of you are not children. maybe you’re a teenager but you’re not ten years old (i fucking hope lol). many, many of you are adults in your 20s! you are viewing those fourth graders’ experiences and the emotions that follow them with your significantly more developed brain and own personal lived experiences (cut because i lost the plot a little with this one)

like that's half of the joke of the show, from what i’ve come to understand over the past four years of my interest in it... matt and trey are writing kids in scenarios that rely on you understanding aspects of the adult world that the ten year olds in the show wouldn’t understand. you understand, or at least have an idea that there are geopolitical situations in the world most kids don’t understand and have no INTEREST in understanding, so that’s what makes it funny when... say, tweek has a mental breakdown over north korea and american political tension. that’s why it’s funny when butters acts like a shithead on the playground and the show relies on you understanding his behavior from years of witnessing the “incel” community gain more and more spotlight and become as much of a running joke and scorned outright as the nft-grindset bros. it’s not because he’s literally an incel - even matt and trey seem to try and be overt with the fact that kids don’t just spawn messed up ideologies on their own. who made eric’s nazi halloween costume for him and assumedly indoctrinated him into violent antisemitism? his mother. probably his extended family too. the internet! the useless people in town who refused to properly intervene aside from a slap on the wrist. 

obviously these cycles repeat, or they wouldn’t show us that every single one of those kids has experienced SOMETHING deeply galling at some point in the show and had it warp their worldview, even if only for one episode (”stupid spoiled whore video playset” about celebrities indoctrinating children into s*xual exploitation, “bebe’s boobs destroy society” pointing a finger at the cosmetic surgery industry manipulating young girls in the same way it manipulates adult women. “back to the cold war” has butters getting into horseracing to compete against a russian kid as a b-line plot to emphasize how adults are scared of political tension with russia, but a lot of them are also scared of that political tension quietly resolving because that means they aren’t really kids anymore. it’s not the cold war anymore is it? that’s what i mean when i saw the humor and the feelings are adult centric, but you’re supposed to remember at least by the end of the episode, that those ten years still don’t know what the hell is going on and really if they could help it, they’d be playing video games or talking shit on the playground. 

and that's supposed to make it funny, that’s the humor they’re selling you. you're supposed to be laughing because it's outlandish and stupid and you can’t believe you’re wasting your time on this show! or you’re feeling nostalgic because you remember aspects of the kids' feelings of not seeing the whole picture but having to deal with the repurcussions of the adults around them anyway, which over the course of the show has caused them to develop in some more unsavory ways just like... everyone who has ever existed ever. there isn’t a single person in this world who hasn’t unintentionally internalised something harmful as a kid and then had to grow out of it. so i guess that’s why i’m confused because it seems like the way this fandom has treated them like high schoolers or young adults exclusively has actually ruined our ability to remember they’re actually 4th graders and always have been, save the post covid specials. 

i understand that it’s projection, but it’s like... seriously impairing your abilities to watch and digest this show in a way that isn’t so deeply biased you turn around and regurgiate a whole new set of insane idealogies that make you sound like the exact kind of bigots you want anywhere but sitting in front of the tv and watching south park. there needs to be so much less projection in a way that means people look at these characters and see full informed eighteen year olds who have the autonomy and vested, increasingly rigid belief systems that come with growing closer to adulthood because this belief that kids who have been badly abused and indocrinated into fascism and therefore cannot be saved is actually so fascist in of itself that i can feel myself actively going grey reading these takes over and over again. please go watch riverdale or jennifer’s body or velma or whatever if you need that kind of  humorless, gritty high school fantasy tv because i’m sort of totally over seeing all these bizarre takes about fictional ten year olds that i can’t tell if you carry with you in real life too. ok bye my heads hurts this was such an insane person rant i need to go back on my meds <3

i don’t know if this is insane of me but i do still find it quite. hm. is the word strange? that everyone feels very comfortable calling characters who are elementary school children “incels”. for a number of reasons really- one being that attributing adult behaviours to kids as if it’s sort of. innate and irreversible is kind of TERF-y, another being that “incel” is a compound word coming from “involuntarily celibate” and butters is the character with maybe the second most (?) traceable and complex sexual abuse history on the show (as if it’s not kind of weird to put a label like that on 10 year olds… anyway?)

i don’t really know how to explain it and it’s possible i’m just being overly sensitive about semantics. because i can see a child of that age self-identifying with that kind of label. but one: it is a quite specific ideology that young people are groomed into, rather than one that they can passively pick up or even worse possess as an inherent character trait, and two: as far as i can see um. well none of you are children. and in my opinion (only my opinion!!!!) you should probably be a little past the point of understanding serious issues on an elementary school level and letting your feelings about dumb cartoons bleed into your real worldview, which. i fear i see happening for some of you lmao
