Toad Words

            Frogs fall out of my mouth when I talk. Toads, too.

            It used to be a problem.

            There was an incident when I was young and cross and fed up with parental expectations. My sister, who is the Good One, has gold fall from her lips, and since I could not be her, I had to go a different way.

            So I got frogs. It happens.

            “You’ll grow into it,” the fairy godmother said. “Some curses have cloth-of-gold linings.” She considered this, and her finger drifted to her lower lip, the way it did when she was forgetting things. “Mind you, some curses just grind you down and leave you broken. Some blessings do that too, though. Hmm. What was I saying?”

            I spent a lot of time not talking. I got a slate and wrote things down. It was hard at first, but I hated to drop the frogs in the middle of the road. They got hit by cars, or dried out, miles away from their damp little homes.

            Toads were easier. Toads are tough. After awhile, I learned to feel when a word was a toad and not a frog. I could roll the word around on my tongue and get the flavor before I spoke it. Toad words were drier. Desiccated is a toad word. So is crisp and crisis and obligation. So are elegant and matchstick.

            Frog words were a bit more varied. Murky. Purple. Swinging. Jazz.

I practiced in the field behind the house, speaking words over and over, sending small creatures hopping into the evening.  I learned to speak some words as either toads or frogs. It’s all in the delivery.

            Love is a frog word, if spoken earnestly, and a toad word if spoken sarcastically. Frogs are not good at sarcasm.

            Toads are masters of it.

            I learned one day that the amphibians are going extinct all over the world, that some of them are vanishing. You go to ponds that should be full of frogs and find them silent. There are a hundred things responsible—fungus and pesticides and acid rain.

            When I heard this, I cried “What!?” so loudly that an adult African bullfrog fell from my lips and I had to catch it. It weighed as much as a small cat. I took it to the pet store and spun them a lie in writing about my cousin going off to college and leaving the frog behind.

            I brooded about frogs for weeks after that, and then eventually, I decided to do something about it.

            I cannot fix the things that kill them. It would take an army of fairy godmothers, and mine retired long ago. Now she goes on long cruises and spreads her wings out across the deck chairs.

            But I can make more.

            I had to get a field guide at first. It was a long process. Say a word and catch it, check the field marks. Most words turn to bronze frogs if I am not paying attention.

            Poison arrow frogs make my lips go numb. I can only do a few of those a day. I go through a lot of chapstick.  

            It is a holding action I am fighting, nothing more. I go to vernal pools and whisper sonnets that turn into wood frogs. I say the words squeak and squill and spring peepers skitter away into the trees. They begin singing almost the moment they emerge.

            I read long legal documents to a growing audience of Fowler’s toads, who blink their goggling eyes up at me. (I wish I could do salamanders. I would read Clive Barker novels aloud and seed the streams with efts and hellbenders. I would fly to Mexico and read love poems in another language to restore the axolotl. Alas, it’s frogs and toads and nothing more. We make do.)

            The woods behind my house are full of singing. The neighbors either learn to love it or move away.

            My sister—the one who speaks gold and diamonds—funds my travels. She speaks less than I do, but for me and my amphibian friends, she will vomit rubies and sapphires. I am grateful.

            I am practicing reading modernist revolutionary poetry aloud. My accent is atrocious. Still, a day will come when the Panamanian golden frog will tumble from my lips, and I will catch it and hold it, and whatever word I spoke, I’ll say again and again, until I stand at the center of a sea of yellow skins, and make from my curse at last a cloth of gold.

Terri Windling posted recently about the old fairy tale of frogs falling from a girl’s lips, and I started thinking about what I’d do if that happened to me, and…well…

Things ik from being in the Fairy Tail and NaLu fandom for 10 years 🙈💜

Whether you've been in the fandoms as long as i have or if you've recently picked up on FT. I want to share some details about the series and characters I've learned within the years I've been apart of the fandom, bc tbh it's fun to look back at some of this stuff! And just in case others didn't know about these things it'll be great to share them with everyone again 😊

I'll add on if i remember more! Mashima always did love to to share sm about FT within the volumes and in interviews.

Please feel free to add on to this post if you have anything you know about the characters or about the story that the rest of us might not know of! 🥰

DISCLAIMER THESE ARE LITERALLY OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. IF I MAKE A MISTAKE PLZ CORRECT ME LOL

1.) Natsu has a specific tailor in town that makes specially tailored clothes for him that are fire proof. And this is bc he kept burning his clothes as a child and Makorav got tired of replacing his clothes all the time and found him this tailor. This makes sense as to why he mostly wears his work clothes all the time, why change clothes if he's just going to erupt into flames every few minutes lol! Also im sure his fire proof clothes are not cheap for him either. (Wish we had more details on this, and that Natsu would take Lucy to get fire proof clothes too!)

2.) Natsu and Lucy have always been the Princess and the Dragon! Early concept art shows Mashima always had a Princessy type of design for Lucy and a Draconic design for Natsu.

3.) Lucy's daily foods are light mainly consisting of fruits! Especially for breakfasts.

4.) Lucy's favorite food is yogurt!

5.) Natsu goes without saying but, yes, he will eat anything. He wasn't raised a picky eater.

6.) Natsu's favorite food.. yes, its meat. SPICY CHARRED! (Kinda kidding..? Bc he dont care. Manz will eat it all 😭)

7.) The director for the first FT movie "The Phoenix Priests", decided he wanted Natsu to have romantic feelings for Lucy. Mashima just went w it 🤷‍♀️

8.) For FTs second movie "Dragon cry" Mashima was creating different designs for Lucy's Star-Dresses, Capricorn being the main one from the movie that had a totally different design than the Capricorn Star-Dress she currently has. (She so fkn bad 🙏💕 Need this dress for her fr)

9.) Natsu and Happy may look like they don't care how they handle their savings, but there's actually a panel before they leave for their one year of training where they have a chest of jewels they've been saving!

10.) Official height for the characters have never been released, but Mashima did draw a sketch of the characters on how tall they are next to each other early on at the start of the series. Natsu seems to be taller than Lucy by a few inches. I love that Mashima added that little detail about Lucy wearing high sole shoes 🙈 (I couldn't find a good quality picture of the full art like the one i use to have but i had Natsu and Lucy's saved, of course!)

11.) Mashima said Lucy's character was inspired by his idea as a teenager of his ideal dream girlfriend.

12.) Mashima was inspired by The Beatles songs for character names (and what just looks to be the Heartfilias!) Lucy's name "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" Jude's name "Hey Jude" (One of his favrt songs) Anna's name "Anna (go to him)" For Layla's name it was also inspired by a song "Layla" by Eric clapton, who knew one of the lead guitarist in The Beatles.

13.) Natsu's character mostly his personality was inspired by a teenage Mashima. He's said in an interview "I was a trouble maker in school." and apparently also got in lots of fights as a teen especially while defending his friends.

14.) Mashima's teenage self also inspired Gray's characters personality too. He was more like Gray's character when he was alone, makes sense.

15.) Unfortunately, Mashima didn't grow up w a father, which is why he says he acted up in school, and cared for his friends sm. This prompted him to write Natsu and Gray without their fathers too.

16.) Mashima is married to his wife, and has a daughter. When asked in an interview what was something he wished he could take back in his career he said "Working so much. I wish i could've spent more time with my daughter." 🥺

17.) Mashima says he's never had a pet but his favorite animals are cats. I think he's also said, that he loves them, but ironically enough he's allergic to them..

18.) Plue is Mashimas favorite character and mascot.

19.) Mirajane's name was inspired by a friend's username he chatted w online when he was younger apparently it was a play on the word Marijuana/Maryjane lol!

20.) In the manga there's a Sorcerer Weekly page interviewing Lucy where she was asked, if she was an animal which one would she be? Lucy said she'd be a bunny! 💙

21.) In Volume 1 of Monthly FT Magazine "Who is Lucy Heartfilia's 'Fantasy Boyfriend'" Natsu was ranked 1st place! Credit to @thefairystales, @melllllly, @ajerzaaddict for the translation!

22.) Also in Volume 1 of Monthly FT Magazine Happy's relationship with Lucy; other than Natsu "Happy is more emotionaly attached to Lucy" (Like father like son lol!)

23.) Lucy's favorite colors are blue and pink! 💘

24.) Celestial Wizards can change the appearance of their Celestial Spirits to their liking! Remember Virgo was in contract with Everlu and he had her be a huge monster person? 😂 And she changed when she became Lucy's spirit. Well there's a drawing by Mashima of Plue in a different form from Rave Master and he looks like a wolf-dog monster, but still rlly cool! So if Plue was in contract with a different wizard he could take that form if they liked. Lucy chooses to see Plue as an innocent little dog though 💕

25.) Todd Haberkorn (Natsu's ENG dub VA) Is a HUGE NaLu stan!

26.) Cherami Leigh (Lucy's ENG dub VA) Was asked once what she thought of Natsu and Lucy's relationship and if she liked them together. She said she saw them as good friends and partners, but she liked Lisanna with Natsu better. I think she did receive hate for this.. but retracted her statement once the story and NaLu's relationship progressed. Im pretty sure lot of us thought the same way once though, and i don't think she even kept up with the anime! She just answered a question.. So i don't understand why they'd stoop so low 🤨 The NaLu's used to be toxic.. I apologize on their behalf miss Cherami not all of us like that! 😣

27.) Aya Hirano (Lucy's JP VA) And Tetsuya Kakihara (Natsu's JP VA) Were once J-pop idols! Their singing is beautiful 🥰 A song i recommend from each of them is "God Knows" by Aya Hirano from the anime "The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya" And "Call my Name" by Tetsuya Kakihara 💞

28.) There's a song by Tetsuya Kakihara and Rie Kugimiya (Happy's JP VA) That they both sing together as Natsu and Happy called "Itsumo Zenkaida" It's adorable!

29.) I wasn't gonna add this just yet, but since im mentioning the JP VA's omg! Aya Hirano played Isabella from Encarto in the JP dub and it's extremely hard not to picture Lucy talking and singing 🤣 Aya sounds wonderful! 💜

30.) Nasha's name means "sweet scent" and "Little fledgling" SOBBING SFM RN 🥲💖
