Suki Waterhouse: Life as a woman is ‘rough’
Tumblr media

Image caption Suki Waterhouse is all smiles on the red carpet
Speaking to Suki Waterhouse on a rainy day in London, you might expect her to be doing something exciting, like a photo shoot for a modelling campaign or a fitting for her next red carpet appearance.
"I just went to see my accountant actually, which was a sobering meeting for a Monday afternoon," she jokes.
"It wasn't very glamorous but I did go to the Evening Standard theatre awards last night, which was great."
At 26, Suki has modelled for the likes of Burberry and Balenciaga, appeared on the covers of British Vogue, US Marie Claire and launched a film and TV career too.
'It feels pretty hardcore'
She says that the current climate makes it difficult to be a young woman, not just in the industry, but for anyone navigating through life.

"When you're a girl there are so many things thrown at you, maybe it's something women have always had but it feels pretty hardcore right now," she tells the BBC.
"It struck me that we're in a time where you're not really sure if you can want a boyfriend, and listen to Lana Del Rey at the same time or want to get married and watch porn.
"It's quite rough - there's the things you're expected to eat, you're supposed to be independent, and to have a great personal life / work life balance."

Image caption Abra, Odessa Young, Hari Nef and Suki Waterhouse star in Assassination Nation
Suki, who had a role in 2015 teen thriller film Insurgent, describes her latest movie, Assassination Nation, as a "coming of age comedy and fun slasher movie".
It's no coincidence that it's set in Salem, with the events of the thriller echoing the historic witch hunts, with the added twist of social media and its ability to wreak modern-day havoc.
Suki says she was drawn to the film because of the characters - she plays 17-year-old Sarah, who navigates life alongside her three best friends Lily (Odessa Young), Bex (Hari Nef) and Em (Abra).
"I know the word imperfect is used a lot, but they're kind of freaky these girls," she says.
'I was hooked'
"I felt like I could relate to that more, these characters were closer to how you talk with your friends.
"I was intrigued by how Sam [director, Sam Levinson], an older man, had managed to immerse himself into a young teenage girl's mind and taken it over.
The most influential under 30s in the world
Waterhouse helps Tom Ford kick off New York Fashion Week
"Everything you want to know about how young girls might talk or the thoughts they have has never been easier to find out - you just have to read a fan fiction or go on Instagram.
"I was hooked and thought it was funny and clever."
Instagram 'not real life'
The film parodies modern day America, especially in the way it presents social media and the ability to spread fake news online.
Suki talks about the way the film's characters are ostracised because they are perceived as different, and says what happens to them is worryingly ever-present in the real world too.
Tumblr media

Image caption Assassination Nation is a dark comedy/thriller exploring teenage life in America
She describes Instagram, which last year was voted as the worst social media platform for young people's mental health, as a "strange hologram".
"If I was to think of an ideal Instagram, there's a sheen over it - it doesn't really reflect life at all," Suki says.
"You can't ever hope to capture someone's soul through social media - it's impossible."
Waterhouse is not one of those who seems fully on board with living her life online, and seems concerned by the lack of guidance young people currently receive.
"No one's getting an education on [social media] - it's not getting taught," she says.

"My Instagram would be a lot more interesting if I did take pictures of everything I was doing - it's pretty watered down and boring!"
"I actually feel safer in making my life seem more bland at the moment."
The actress says she deliberately plays it safe online through fear of being trolled: "We're in a strange time where everyone is being encouraged to use your voice.
"But I feel afraid because of the righteousness on the internet - it makes me want to shrink away a little bit more."
'Bit of a warzone'
Suki may appear to live an impossibly glamorous life, but is keen to tell her 1.4 million Instagram followers, that, really, life can be anything but.
"For me, I know that these are pictures of a girl who looks like me who goes to the places I go but it's not a representation really of me.
"It's a bit of a warzone, maybe in the future I'll want to express more."
But for now, it's back to meeting the accountant.
Assassination Nation is released in the UK on Friday 23 November.

Mick Hucknall’s secret? Keeping his mouth shut
Tumblr media
Image copyright Brian Rasic
Image caption The new album was recorded live with a 40-piece orchestra
It's been 33 years since Simply Red's debut album Picture Book introduced the world to singer Mick Hucknall's northern brand of blue-eyed soul.
They say the last thing to depart a champion boxer is his knockout punch and if a similar comparison can be made with singers, then it's the voice. Too many tours, too much hard-living and not enough rest can ravage what was once a thing of beauty.
Now, aged 58, Hucknall - who has just released a live performance CD and DVD, backed up by a full orchestra - has cottoned on to the best way of preserving what has been his livelihood for four decades.
He tries his best not to speak during the day.
Selflessly breaking his own rule, he talks to BBC News. "As I've gotten older I've got more bass in my voice but also because I don't talk very much during the day I've managed to keep my voice in good condition.
"I'm still lucky enough to be able to hit the high notes... I don't quite know how I've been so fortunate - I don't do anything to take care of my voice except not talk very much. I try to keep my voice conditioned by just not using it very much and it's paid off."

Symphonica in Rosso was recorded over three nights at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam in 2017.
Hucknall and his band are accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra as they run through hits from across their eleven albums and some jazz standards made famous by Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole.
"The initial offer came out of the blue and I replied 'yes' immediately because the last time I performed with an orchestra that size was in Greenwich on Millennium night for the BBC," says Hucknall.
"They asked me to perform what I thought was my song of the century and I chose Frank Sinatra's My Way and I performed it with the London Symphony Orchestra.
"I just chose the first song that came into my head."
He admits it's an intimidating challenge for a singer to try to match the sheer volume of a live orchestra, given he generally doesn't like to rehearse.
"It was very, very different when you perform with an orchestra - when you watch a conductor working, they are moving to a swing they are not responding directly to the beat.
"I don't usually rehearse, which scares my bandmates sometimes but in this case, I thought I'll turn up and sing a bit and keep everybody happy and I was really glad that I did because it was entirely different.
"For the first couple of hours I found it very difficult."
Tumblr media
Image caption The band have five UK number one albums
It was back in 2009, two years after Simply Red's number four album Stay, that Hucknall announced he was bringing Simply Red to an end, 25 years after they formed in Manchester.
"I've kind of decided that the 25 years is going to be enough, so I intend that the 2009 will be the last Simply Red tour," he is reported to have said at the time.

Six years later, the band reunited for a 30th anniversary tour, out of which bloomed a new top five album Big Love and another anniversary tour the following year, this time for 25 years of their chart topping Stars - the 11th best selling album of all-time in the UK.
Hucknall insists people may have misinterpreted his seemingly self-imposed early retirement.
"If you go back to what I actually said at the time, I didn't use those kind of phrases, I didn't use the words 'splitting up' or 'breaking up'. I really was doing it because I had a luxury that most men don't have of being able to stop work and bring up my kid."
Raised by a single father after the family was abandoned by his mother when he was just three years old, Hucknall relished being in a position to be a hands-on dad.
"I didn't want to be one of those touring musicians who get to hear about their daughter taking her first steps while they're in New Zealand. I cut the cord when my baby was born, I'm around all the time and it's given me the happiest 10 years of my life."
"Bringing up my kid was the main reason why I stopped. If you don't then you've got these endless commitments. You get pressure from the record company to release an album every two years, you have to go on tour and I knew that wouldn't stop, so I said to my manager, 'I don't want to do this any more'.
According to the latest figures from the office of National Statistics, more than 232,000 men opted out of the workplace in 2018 - that is the lowest number since 2014.
And in March this year, an Equalities Select Committee report found only 2% to 8% of fathers take up shared parental leave.
"I'm glad I did what I did," insists Hucknall. "The media wants to sell things and make a story and use a phrase like 'splitting up' but stopping is not the same as splitting up."
To stamp home the point, Hucknall reveals his band have just recorded what will be their 12th studio album, which he says will be a departure from the "smoother sounds" of previous releases.
"I wanted to push my voice a little harder," he explains.
Tumblr media

Image caption Hucknall played Glastonbury in 1986
"It's a mixture of soul and funk and rhythm and blues and it's a more direct style."
Once a mainstay of the heady 90s' London party circuit, Hucknall credits his new-found domestic bliss with a new burst of creativity.
"I'm a songwriter, my love of music has never left me and I literally don't seem to be able to stop writing songs, they keep coming. I get great creative pleasure from my work."
A songwriter he may be but writing his own memoirs apparently holds no interest for the singer whose colourful love life was once the talk of the tabloids.
"I've never been much of a celebrity," he claims. "I'll leave that to other people. My biggest thrills were encounters with great people, being complimented by George Harrison and Miles Davis.
"I met Miles in 1986 at the Grammy awards and he was heading to the bathroom and I was talking to this lovely girl and he walked by and I was so excited to see him and he turned back and said "Simply Red, right?'
"I was speechless and just nodded, he said: 'I love that album Picture Book, man', and walked away. I don't care about celebrity but give me a moment like that."
Simply Red: Symphonica in Rosso is out now.

Googles News Initiative heads to APAC with grants of up to $300K for media orgs
Google is expanding its efforts to support media to Asia-Pacific after the search giant brought its Google News Initiative to the region.
Known as GNI, the program is designed to “help quality journalism thrive in the digital age” by providing grants (i.e. cash without equity) to media organizations that are judged to have potential. The initiative started life in Europe in 2015 with a $170 million fund; a $300 million U.S.-based incarnation went live earlier this year. It has also extended to YouTube after GNI set aside $25 million and pledged to work with media figures to combat fake news and develop new features.
For Asia-Pacific, Google isn’t saying precisely how large the kitty is, but it is promising grants of “up to” $300,000 for publishers developing new and innovative business models and revenue streams.
“We are inviting proposals for projects aimed at increasing revenue from readers, including subscriptions, membership programs, contributions and/or new digital products and services. A panel of Googlers and other tech industry executives will review the submissions and fund selected projects up to $300,000 and finance up to 70 percent of the total project cost,” Kate Beddoe, Google’s head of news and publishing partnerships, wrote in a blog post.
A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that the grants will be staggered. Successful applicants will be provided with their grant in tranches in exchange for sharing their experiences with the wider community, for example, as materials published online or at events. That information exchange is aimed at helping media within Asia-Pacific to learn from each another and more generally share sustainability ideas and war stories.
The fund was announced today but it won’t kick off until 2019.
Those wanting to submit applications can do so at the dedicated website (here) from November 28 until January 9. Google said it’ll provide additional details on December 11 when it will host an APAC town hall at its Singapore office — the live stream for that is here.
Google isn’t the only one backing media across APAC through grants. Blockchain media startup Civil recently announced a $1 million fund for Asia, although it remains to be seen if that will go ahead since the company canceled its ICO after failing to hit its $8 million minimum target.

The One Thing You Need To Do Before Thanksgiving Day
If you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year, your mind is likely occupied with recipe research, house cleaning, family travel logistics and kitchen prep. But before you embark on a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal, there’s one very important thing you need to do: Make a recycling plan.
People often recycle incorrectly or fail to recycle at all, said Rebecca Benner, the director of science and strategy at The Nature Conservancy in New York. And Thanksgiving certainly presents the opportunity to create a lot of waste.
“The consequence of not recycling is that your waste ends up in landfills and produces toxic gases that harm the planet and lead to more climate change, which in turn has huge numbers of consequences,” said Benner. “It’s also really important to check with your local agency to see what they do and don’t recycle because you can contaminate an entire batch of recycling if you stick something in there that can’t be recycled.”
Look Up Your Community Guidelines
Before Thursday, look up your community’s recycling information. Not every municipality accepts the same recyclables, so it’s important to learn which items are accepted in your area. You can also find options for responsibly disposing of less common types of materials, though they may require driving to a specific location or coordinating a pickup.
The Keep America Beautiful campaign website includes a guide to what types of items are recyclable, along with helpful “myth buster” columns to separate sustainability fact from fiction. It’s also helpful to learn about different types of plastic with charts that break down the numbering system.
Some things to keep in mind around Thanksgiving include the importance of scrubbing food grease off aluminum pans and tins, removing wood or plastic accents on otherwise recyclable items and repurposing things that can’t be recycled like stained napkins and tablecloths. If after consulting online resources, you’re still not sure about what you can and cannot recycle, try calling your local recycling service ahead of Thanksgiving Day.
“It’s easier to do recycling the wrong way than it is to do it the right way,” Benner said, noting that recycling companies often change the rules around what is and isn’t accepted and don’t always communicate these changes very well. “Sometimes, it just takes a lot of conscientious research or contacting your local recycling company to make sure that you’re actually putting in the things that they take.”
Tumblr media

There are many steps you can take toward having a sustainable Thanksgiving.
Of course, you can take further steps toward having a sustainable Thanksgiving. “Obviously the best thing you could do is minimize the number of things you even need to recycle because recycling still takes energy,” said Benner.
Beyond Recycling
One positive step is using real plates, cutlery, cookware and serving platters. Investing in a large roasting pan that you don’t have to throw away is a great way to save yourself from having to buy new disposable ones, especially if you think you might host Thanksgiving again in the future or want to roast a chicken at some point during the year.
“As a working mom who has lots of people over for Thanksgiving, the idea of washing my dishes is sometimes more than I can handle, but I always try to use reusable dishes,” Benner noted. “And if you have a dishwasher, even better because that actually saves on water as opposed to hand-washing the dishes.”
If you do end up using disposable aluminum pans, you can wash them and try to reuse them again or even convert them to foil covers for leftovers (while following health guidelines of course).
If you can’t go with reusable dishes, Benner recommends compostable forks, knives, plates or cups rather than the single-use plastic options.
“Plastics end up in our oceans, they end up in animals, and they kill off water systems. It’s great that we’re capable of recycling some plastics because at least we can do something with the stuff that can’t break down,” said Benner. “But it’s still very energy-intensive. So in my house, everything is at least semi-compostable, and there’s a plethora of options out there now that are more sustainable in nature so they break down more readily.”
The Food Waste Issue
Another way to be more eco-conscious around the holiday is to calculate your Thanksgiving travel carbon footprint and offset it by contributing to a program like Carbon Fund or Terrapass. And then of course, there’s the food waste component.
Benner also recommends being realistic about how much food your guests actually will need, cooking with local, organic ingredients whenever possible, minimizing meat (and going free-range with your turkey), turning your cooking scraps into soups or other easy dishes you can freeze, and of course, embracing the leftovers game.
“The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that we waste 30 to 40 percent of the overall food supply ― that’s about 133 billion pounds of food a year and that’s the singular biggest source of waste to our landfills which produce tons of methane, which is a major factor in climate change,” said Benner. “So if we can lower food waste, eat our leftovers, make the portion sizes more reasonable for the number of people coming, we can do a huge amount toward having a more sustainable Thanksgiving.”

The job fair, which consisted of people filling out paperwork before talking to the five companies that attended, featured added police protection after a weekend of angry protests. About 500 people demonstrated in an affluent section of Tijuana on Sunday against the caravan.
The job fair, opened by government officials is open to all migrants that are now filling the city in addition to residents, will continue through Dec. 16, according to the Republic.

On Sunday, dozens of protesters then marched to an outdoor sports complex near downtown where 2,500 migrants are staying, sleeping on dirt fields and under bleachers after arriving at the border city a week ago.
Dulce Alvarado, 28, from Lempira, Honduras, told the Associated Press she was stepping out of a corner grocery near the complex carrying her 2-year-old son when she was surrounded by the demonstrators chanting "Get out!" and "We don't want you here!"

Many residents fear that as the migrants stay longer in the city, crime could go up. Since 2016, thousands of Haitians who also tried to get to the U.S. ended up settling here, while at the same time, Tijuana has taken in thousands of Mexicans deported from the United States.

Tijuana also has been struggling with drug violence and some say they do not want the caravan bringing more problems. The city's mayor, Juan Manuel Gastelum, has called the migrants' arrival an "avalanche" that the city is ill-prepared to handle, calculating that they will be in Tijuana for at least six months as they wait to file asylum claims.
Officials in the U.S. have dramatically increased border security in preparation for the caravan's arrival, closing lanes at ports of entry to place cement barriers topped with razor wire that can be quickly moved to block passage should there be a mass number who try to force their way into the country.

80% Of Fish In The Amazon River Have Plastic In Their Stomach
For the first time, scientists have found evidence of plastic contamination in freshwater fish in the Amazon, revealing the extent of the plastic pollution problem the world faces.
In a study published in the journal Environmental Pollution, a team led by Marcelo Andrade from the Federal University of Pará in Brazil describe how they found plastic debris in a variety of fishes in Brazil’s Xingu River, a tributary of the Amazon River.
“Plastic bags, bottles, fishing gear, and other products are entering Amazonian water bodies and degrade into meso- and micro-plastic particles that may be ingested, either directly or indirectly via food chains, by fishes,” the team wrote.
Looking at the stomach contents of 172 specimens, they found pieces of plastic ranging in size from 1 to 15 millimeters in a quarter of them. And there was no consistent pattern – fish with different diets (omnivores, herbivores, and carnivores) were all found to have plastic in them.
In total, more than 80 percent of the species they examined had ingested plastic, with 96 pieces of plastic found in 46 fish. This included the red-bellied piranha and the redhook silver dollar. The dozen distinct polymers of plastic identified are used in the manufacturing of bags, bottles, and more.
“It was a sad surprise because in the initial stage of our research the main objective was to understand the feeding ecology of fish, but when we started analyzing the stomach contents we found plastic,” study co-author Tommaso Giarrizzo from the Federal University of Pará in Brazil told The Guardian. “It’s alarming because this pollution is spread throughout the Amazon basin.”
The research highlights the problem of plastic in environments like this, with rivers said to be the cause of up to a fifth of all ocean plastic waste. It shows that oceans are not the only places we should be worried about when it comes to the impacts of plastic pollution. About 60,000 tonnes (66,000 tons) of plastic are thought to be carried by the Amazon River into the Atlantic Ocean every year.
But the world is now starting to push back against plastic pollution. Some of the biggest brands on the planet recently pledged to eliminate single-use plastic from their products, while the EU has also voted to ban single-use plastics.
And that's pretty good timing, because we're starting to find plastic waste all over the place. Aside from this latest study, last month scientists also reported that microplastics had been found in human feces.

BBC licences: Who should pay?
Tumblr media
Media playback is unsupported on your device
Media captionThe director general of the BBC, Lord Hall says: "We need to hear views to help the BBC make the best and fairest decision."
The consultation just announced by the BBC, into whether the BBC should carry on paying for the licence-fees of over-75s, is a curious beast.
The BBC cannot be seen to take a position on the outcome, and says it will be governed by the principle of fairness - but it's clear from everything its leadership is saying that this financial burden is becoming unbearable.
The current arrangement ends after 2020. Lord Hall, the Director-General, has said repeatedly in recent months that services and programmes are under strain because of the new, global, hyper-inflationary world in which the BBC is operating.
That financial pressure is driving this consultation. Whatever one thinks of the viability of the licence-fee in today's world, it is a matter of fact that the BBC is suddenly competing with vastly richer, mostly American makers of television who are largely unencumbered by regulation and can focus on making programmes that drive large audiences. Competing in this world is getting much, much harder for the BBC; doing so with what would amount to a near 20 per cent cut in its budget makes it very significantly harder still.
Getting involved in the potential means-testing of benefits is unnatural, even uncomfortable, terrain for a public service broadcaster. It was remarkable that Ed Vaizey, a former culture minister, should have recently admitted in the Evening Standard (a paper edited by George Osborne, who negotiated this policy for the government when Chancellor) that the policy is a politically-motivated "wheeze".
There is a particular and acute problem concerning young people, too. At the moment, this policy in effect involves younger licence-fee payers subsidising older ones. And yet all the evidence suggests that younger viewers are less devoted to the BBC than older ones, who grew up in a world where the BBC was - relatively speaking - a bigger beast than it is today.
Asking younger audiences to fund the consumption of older audiences, when the latter consume more of the BBC, is not likely to increase goodwill among the licence-fee payers of the future.
Naturally, critics of the BBC will say that a compulsory licence-fee - with potential fines and worse for those who don't cough up - is intolerable, especially in the 21st century. These critics argue the licence fee is an analogue instrument in a digital age.
Earlier today, I discussed the options and the consultation with Lord Hall.

(Abir Sultan/Pool via AP)
JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he was heading into a meeting with his top coalition partner in a "last effort" to prevent the collapse of his government, which has been rocked by the resignation of its defense minister over a cease-fire agreement with Gaza militants.
Speaking at his weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said it would be unwise to embark on a divisive election campaign during such a sensitive time for Israeli security. He said he would try to convince Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and his centrist Kulanu party to stay in the fold.
"It would be both unnecessary and incorrect to go to elections. We remember well what happened when elements inside the coalitions took down Likud governments in 1992 and in 1999," he said, noting the past two elections in which the Labor Party came to power.
"We need to do everything we can to prevent repeating these mistakes," he added.
The sudden coalition crisis was sparked by the resignation of Israel's hard-line Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who had demanded a far stronger response last week to the most massive wave of rocket attacks on Israel since the 2014 Israel-Hamas war. He alleges the truce will put southern Israel under a growing threat from Hamas, similar to that posed to northern Israel by Lebanon's heavily armed Hezbollah group.
The departure of Lieberman and his Yisrael Beitenu party leaves the coalition with a one-seat majority in the 120-member parliament. Netanyahu's other partners say that makes governing untenable and would leave the coalition susceptible to the extortion of any single lawmaker until elections scheduled for November 2019.
Education Minister Naftali Bennett, of the pro-settler Jewish Home party, has already threatened to bring down the government if he is not appointed defense minister. Kahlon says another year of such instability will harm the economy.
Netanyahu is trying to convince them to stay, and his Likud allies are already preparing to pin the blame on them if that effort fails.
"I think that there is no reason to shorten the term of a national government, not even for one day, and at this moment it's in the hands of the education minister and the finance minister," said Gilad Erdan, the minister of public security.
No Israeli government has served out its full term since 1988. Since then, elections have almost always been moved up because of a coalition crisis or a strategic move by the prime minister to maximize his chances of re-election.
Though Netanyahu has been reportedly flirting with the idea of moving up elections himself in recent months, the current timing is not ideal for him.
He has come under heavy criticism for agreeing to the Gaza cease-fire, especially from within his own political base and in the working-class, rocket-battered towns in southern Israel that are typically strongholds of his Likud Party. But with Lieberman forcing his hand and the other coalition partners appearing eager to head to the polls he may not have a choice.
Most opinion polls show Netanyahu easily securing re-election, which would secure him a place in Israeli history as the country's longest serving leader. But several factors could trip him up, including a potential corruption indictment that could knock him out of contention.
Police have recommended he be indicted on bribery and breach of trust charges in two cases and have questioned him at length on another. The country has long been eagerly awaiting the attorney general's decision on whether to press charges.
Netanyahu has angrily dismissed the accusations against him, characterizing them as part of a media-driven witch-hunt that is obsessed with removing him from office.

Scientists Say They Can Turn Human Poop Into Fuel
Scientists claim to have shown that human waste can be used as a fuel safely, which could make it a viable source of fuel in certain countries.
Published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the study was led by the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel. Using a pressure cooker, the team said they were able to convert excrement into hydrochar, a safe and reusable biomass fuel that resembles charcoal.
“Human excreta are considered hazardous due to their potential to transmit disease," said study co-author Professor Amit Gross from BGU in a statement. “While it is rich in organic matter, nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, human waste also contains micropollutants from pharmaceuticals, which can lead to environmental problems if not disposed or re-used properly.”
In their study, the team used hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) to heat the waste to up to 240°C (460°F) for up to two hours. This caused the waste to become dehydrated, producing hydrochar, which is both combustible and nutrient-rich, meaning it can be used as fuel and fertilizer. The process also sterilizes the hydrochar, making it safe to handle.
About 2.3 billion people in the world lack basic sanitation, which includes 892 million people that defecate in the open. Some of these regions also have to deal with a scarcity of energy.
Many use solid biomass like wood, converted into charcoal, for cooking and heating. However, these have a significant carbon footprint, whereas human waste could offer a cleaner alternative. In theory, hydrochar could be used to heat homes and in cooking, with its liquid byproduct useful as a fertilizer.
"By treating human waste properly, we can address both of these issues [energy and waste] at once," Professor Gross said.
Similar research was conducted by BGU last year on the excrement of turkey and other poultry. The team found the best results came from cooking the feces while it was wet at high temperature and high pressure, like in a pressure cooker.
“Their ultimate goal is to try to roast a bird with their homemade hydrochar, and eat it afterwards,” noted NPR. “Once made, the hydrochar doesn't emit any stink – it even has a pleasant aroma!”
Lovely stuff.

Pope decries that ‘wealthy few’ feast on what belongs to all
Tumblr media
Pope Francis is seen above.
Championing the cause of the poor, Pope Francis on Sunday lamented that "the wealthy few" enjoy what, "in justice, belongs to all" and said Christians cannot remain indifferent to the growing cries of the exploited and the indigent, including migrants.
Francis invited about 6,000 poor people as well as some of the volunteers who help them to the splendor of St. Peter's Basilica where he celebrated Mass on a day the Catholic Church dedicates to the needy. Later, he sat down with 1,500 of the indigent for a lunch of lasagna, chicken, mashed potatoes and tiramisu in a Vatican auditorium.
In his homily, Francis said "we Christians cannot stand with arms folded in indifference or with arms outstretched in helplessness" about those in need. He cited the "stifled cry" of the unborn, of starving children, "of young people more used to the explosion of bombs than happy shouts at the playground."
He also drew attention to the plight of abandoned elderly, the friendless and "the cry of all those forced to flee their homes and native land for an uncertain future. It is the cry of entire peoples, deprived even of the great natural resources at their disposal."
Francis said the poor were weeping "while the wealthy few feast on what, in justice, belongs to all. Injustice is the perverse root of poverty."
BREXIT CHAOS CONTINUES AS UK'S THERESA MAY WARNS AGAINST A LEADERSHIP CHANGE
"The cry of the poor daily becomes stronger but every day heard less," he said. That cry is "drowned out by the din on the rich few, who grow ever fewer and more rich," the pontiff said.
Last week, doctors, nurses and other health workers volunteered their time to offer medical assistance to the homeless and other need from morning till night in St. Peter's Square. The initiative reflects the Francis' determination that the Vatican promote by way of example priorities for rank-and-file faithful.
Francis said during Mass Sunday that "it is important for all of us to live our faith in contact with those in need."
Later, in remarks to pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter's Square, Francis spoke of the futility of making riches one's goal. He noted that with at the end of each life "the power of money and of economic means with which we presume with presumptuousness to buy everything and everyone won't be able to be used anymore."

Five years and one pivot later, Trueface emerges with a promise for better facial recognition tech
Shaun Moore and Nezare Chafni didn’t initially intend to develop a new standalone facial recognition technology, when they first got started developing the technology that would become their new company, Trueface.ai.
When the two serial entrepreneurs were planning their next act five years ago, they wanted to ride the wave of smart home technologies with the development of a new smart doorbell — called Chui.
That doorbell would be equipped with facial recognition software as a service. The company raised $500,000 in angel funding and opened a manufacturing facility in Medellin, Colombia.
What the two entrepreneurs discovered was that most existing facial recognition tools lacked the ability to identify spoof or presentation attacks, which rendered the tech unfeasible for the access control functions they were trying to develop.
So Moore and Chafni set out to develop better software for facial recognition.
youtube
“In 2014 we focused our engineering efforts on deploying face recognition on the edge in highly constrained environments that could identify hack or spoof attempts,” Moore, the chief executive of Trueface.ai said in an email. “This technology is the core of what has become Trueface.”
With the upgrades to the product, Chui began tackling the commercial access control market, and while customers loved the software, they wanted to use their own hardware for the product, according to Moore.
So the two entrepreneurs shuttered the factory in 2017 and began focusing on selling the facial recognition product on its own. Thus Trueface was born.
It’s actually the third company that the two founders have worked on together. Friends since their days studying business at Southern Methodist University, Moore and Chafni previously worked on a content management startup, before moving on to Chui’s smart doorbell.
The company spun Trueface out of Chui in June 2017 and raised seed capital from investors including Scout Ventures with Harvard Business Angels and GSV Labs. That $1.5 million round has powered the company’s development since (including the integration with IFTT earlier this year to prove that its system worked).
But over the past few years, as damning stories around the risks associated with potentially bad training data being applied to facial recognition technologies continued to appear, the company set itself another task — aligning its training data with the real world.
Sen. Harris tells federal agencies to get serious about facial recognition risks
To that end the company has partnered with a global non-profit which is collecting facial images from Africa, Asia and Southeast Asia to create a more robust portfolio of images to train its recognition software.
“Like many facial recognition companies, we acknowledge the implicit bias in publicly available training data that can result in misidentification of certain ethnicities,” the company’s chief executive has written. “We think that is unacceptable, and have pioneered methods to collect a multiplicity of anonymized face data from around the world in order to balance our training models. For example, we partnered with non-profits in Africa and Southeast Asia to ensure our training data is diverse and inclusive, resulting in reduced bias and more accurate face recognition – for all.
The company has also established three principles by which its technology will be applied. The first is an explicit commitment to reduce bias in training data; the second, an agreement with its customers that in any case that goes to court, human decision making is privileged over any data from its software; and finally, an explicit focus on data security to prevent breaches and data transparency so that customers discloes what information they’re collecting.
“When implemented responsibly, people will demand this technology for its daily benefits and utility, not fear it,” writes Moore.

The Khashoggi case just won’t go away for Trump and his Saudi allies
Tumblr media
(CNN)The death of Jamal Khashoggi continues to hang over the heads of both US President Donald Trump and his allied Saudi officials.
Tumblr media
The timing of the two courses of action was surely no coincidence. It seems both parties were hoping their responses together would shield the Crown Prince from growing accusations of involvement.
But what a difference a day makes. On Friday, the CIA concluded the Crown Prince personally ordered the journalist's killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month, a senior US official and a source familiar with the matter told CNN.
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, however, said the government had not drawn any final conclusions about who was responsible, adding "numerous unanswered questions" remained.
Still, the CIA's explosive assessment makes Riyadh's repeated denials that bin Salman was connected to Khashoggi's death much harder to swallow, and if it's true, the development may be a major blow to the special relationship Trump has fostered with the Saudi royals.
Saudi Arabia has offered so many narratives of how journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed that it's difficult to believe it will now tell the whole truth.
Riyadh first claimed to know nothing about Khashoggi's disappearance, but weeks later, the Saudi attorney general finally admitted his murder had been premeditated. Saudi prosecutors on Thursday offered yet another version of events, saying Khashoggi was killed by a lethal dose of a sedative in an abduction attempt gone wrong.
Despite the reports about the CIA's findings, Trump is sticking by his friends in the Middle East.
Tumblr media
Before he was briefed by the CIA on Saturday, Trump repeated his belief in the Crown Prince's innocence, saying he had been "told that he did not play a role" and that the country had been "a truly spectacular ally."
"They give us a lot of jobs, they give us a lot of business, a lot of economic development," he said on Saturday.
The CIA's assessment, first reported by the Washington Post, is based on a recording provided by the Turkish government and other evidence, including US intelligence, the senior US official said.
Among that intelligence is a phone call from the Crown Prince's brother Khalid bin Salman and Khashoggi, in which Kalid encourages the journalist to make the trip to the consulate, according to the Post. Sources told the Post that Khalid made the call at his brother's command.
Khalid denies the Post's reporting, saying on Twitter he never spoke to Khashoggi by phone and "never suggested he go to Turkey for any reason."
A Saudi embassy spokeswoman said in a statement the reported claims were false. "We have and continue to hear various theories without seeing the primary basis for these speculations."
Trump's not alone
It's not only Trump who would find a guilty Crown Prince a geopolitical problem.
Soon after Khashoggi's death, several world leaders called for an independent investigation. Those calls have turned to whispers in recent weeks and few other countries, besides Canada, are still talking of sanctions.
Tumblr media
Ayham Kamel, head of Eurasia Group's Middle East practice, said that is largely because few leaders want to see a faltering Saudi Arabia.
"None of the key Western countries that have relations with Saudi Arabia-- the US and its allies -- want to destabilize the kingdom, or create the situation where there is an open-power struggle," Kamel told CNN.
"There are too many hot spots in the Middle East and leaders don't want to add Saudi Arabia to the list. Open power struggles are difficult to predict and difficult to control."
A challenge to bin Salman's authority would be particularly messy.
The 33-year-old wields an extraordinary amount of power that the kingdom has never seen before among princes. He oversees almost every major agency in the country that deals with the economy, security and intelligence.
Tumblr media
To put his dominance in perspective, it was the Crown Prince who was tasked with shaking up the country's intelligence apparatus in response to Khashoggi's death.
Bin Salman consolidated his position by intimidating his main rivals in a spectacular show of power. The Crown Prince had hundreds of senior government officials, advisers and businessmen detained for months in Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton, transforming the hotel into a gilded prison, in a masked "anti-corruption" drive.
He has enemies within his own family too. Bin Salman skipped over dozens of other princes who would normally precede him as heir to the throne, and any implication of the Crown Prince's involvement in the Khashoggi case could be enough of an opportunity for his rivals to reemerge.
"Once the dust settles on the Khashoggi killing, pressure on the Crown Prince to share power with the rest of the family will remain, if not increase," Stratfor, the geopolitical intelligence firm, wrote in a recent article.
Saudis under the US' wing
Trump was reluctant to issue sanctions on Saudi Arabia in the first place but was forced to under pressure from Congress and he is less likely to want to target the Crown Prince, even if it means going against his own intelligence agencies.
Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has built a cozy relationship with bin Salman, and was instrumental to designing the US' Saudi policy, largely centered around the Crown Prince and his vision to modernize the kingdom's economy.
In a conversation with Saudi King Salman two weeks after Khashoggi's death, Trump not only seemed to buy into the monarch's version of events that he and the Crown Prince knew nothing at all of the killing, he even laid out the Saudis' first narrative for them, telling reporters that Khashoggi was murdered by "rogue killers" completely removed from the King and his son.
Tumblr media
Symbolic funeral prayers held for journalist
It was the first sign in the case that Trump would side -- even coordinate -- with the King and Crown Prince. Then too, he made clear that one journalist's life wasn't worth risking lucrative arms and trade deals (though he grossly exaggerated just how valuable those deals were to the US).
It has been under this protective wing of the Trump administration that the Saudis have been able to pursue an aggressive foreign policy and act on with a sense of impunity, according to Stratfor.
"For Riyadh, the calculation that it can afford to upset relations temporarily with friends, only to restore them later, is a reasonable one," Stratfor wrote.
"Saudi Arabia's growing assertiveness is driven in part by the political cover it receives from its special relationship with the current US administration. The White House relies heavily on Saudi Arabia in its effort to contain their mutual adversary, Iran. Washington also seeks Saudi cooperation to temper oil prices."
Saudi Arabia is projecting that assertiveness around the region, whether it be in a consulate in Turkey, in the world of Lebanese politics or a brutal war in Yemen.
Even Canada has felt the wrath of the Crown Prince's overreach. When officials in Ottawa demanded the release of imprisoned activists, Riyadh froze new trade and investment deals, suspended flights to Canada, expelled Canada's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, while recalling its own, and even moved Saudi students studying there.
Turkey's possible motives
The greatest pressure on Saudi Arabia, however, has come from Turkey, which says Khashoggi was strangled to death as soon as he arrived at the consulate and his body then dismembered in a premeditated murder.
Turkish officials have been releasing information around Khashoggi's death drip by drip, trying to draw out the world's interest and keep Riyadh in focus.
Tumblr media
Turkey has said for more than a month that it has audio evidence of how Khashoggi was killed and, more recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country had shared that evidence with several Western allies.
It is this drip feed of information that has forced Saudi officials to keep changing their story and that appears to have cornered them into admitting Khashoggi's murder was premeditated.
But Turkey, which is undergoing a brutal crackdown on journalists of its own, is likely to have other motives in pursuing Saudi Arabia so aggressively, Eurasia's Kamel said.
"This is being used for geopolitical competition between Sunni powers in the region. Ankara and Riyadh are longtime competitors in the Middle East, and Turkey is using this case to expand its regional power while ensuring Saudi Arabia's rise is contained," Kamel said.
"The agenda Mohammed bin Salman has introduced on foreign policy is more Arab-centric, not only containing Iranian influence but containing Turkish influence too. So Saudi Arabia reemerging as a leader of the Arab world doesn't necessarily align with Turkey's strategic interests.
In the meantime Khashoggi's family is still hoping to discover where their relative's body -- or remains -- may be. The absence of Khashoggi's body at a funeral in an Istanbul mosque on Friday was a dark reminder that the whole truth has still not been revealed and may never be.

Kim Kardashian Says It’s ‘Awkward’ For Tristan Thompson To Watch ‘KUWTK’ Episodes! – Perez Hilton
It’s no secret that Kim Kardashian West has been giving Tristan Thompson
While watching a family member threaten you with their saliva is just another Sunday night for the Kardashians, Kimmy Kakes admitted it can be a bit “awkward” for KUWTK newcomers to hear the shady things that were said behind their backs months before. She explained:
“It is awkward, especially for maybe Tristan, who isn’t used to this. Unfortunately, that was what’s going on in our lives. So six months later when it replays and they’ve gotten through what they needed to get through and it’s rehashed in front of everyone and everyone’s giving their opinions all over again and we’re live tweeting and everyone’s chiming in. So that is hard for Khloe and I’m sure for Tristan, but it’s our reality.”
And we’re all just living in it.
Thankfully, the famous fam has learned how to cope with this so-called reality of theirs. Kim said of the show’s pre-taped episodes:
“We’ve learned to kind of use [the episodes] as a therapy just to kind of get it out one last time with everyone else.”
Because, yes, everything that’s playing out on the cameras is 100% real:
“There’s nothing really that we’ve taken out. So we will let everyone watch and be like, ‘OK, this is what I said about you and this is how I feel about you or felt about you. It is what it is.”
The family definitely doesn’t shy away from letting each other know how they feel — not even Kanye West, apparently.
Later in the interview, the KKW Beauty mogul admitted that she can sometimes “get in trouble” with her husband over her sexxxy Instagram photos, revealing:
“It’s like half and half because he always wants me to be me and feel confident and we’re having fun, but it also bothers him.”
So, how does one of the world’s biggest Instagram influencers deal? Watch the clip of her interview (below) to find out!

James Caan was there and all these people were there and he was drinking peach schnapps. And it’s clear and horrible. I did a couple of shots of that and I was like, ‘I’m not gonna hang with this guy. He’s gonna kill me.’ So, I gave the waitress $500 to keep bringing me shots of water and bring him shots of peach schnapps. Every five minutes, he’d be sitting there talking to (his wife) Maria and I’d be like, ‘Hey, let’s go! Come on superstud, let’s go!’ I got him literally about 15 shots in and he was just sitting there slumped over the table.”

When he did the voice of Sparky, Stan's gay dog [for episode four], he did the voice remotely. We never met him until he finally came by the studio to do a voice for the South Park movie."
