reading some FS stuff and seeing people say that the difference between FS and gymnastics is that gymnastics isn’t dominated by first-year seniors who burn out quickly and can’t last multiple cycles
me looking at USAG before 2016:
idk, what do you guys think (if anyone still follows me haha)
Simone Biles cheers on MyKayla Skinner, who replaced her in the Olympic Event Finals finals for Vault and received a silver medal.
I knew [Simone] was going to be the loudest one in there tonight.
I dedicate this medal to Simone. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her. I told her I would be doing this one for her. She said, ‘don’t do it for me, do it for yourself’, so technically it’s for all of us. (x)
Rebeca Andrade of Brazil wins the gold medal in Artistic Gymnastics Women's Vault in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Tokyo, on August 1, 2021.
I think that Khorkina truly understands & empathizes with what Simone's going through because this is actually the most insightful interview I have read on this topic & touches on not just the twisties, but every potential factor of what Simone could be dealing with.
She talks about learning new skills, pushing difficulty, balancing life & gymnastics, the pressure of the media guaranteeing all these gold medals before the Olympics even happened, & how the focus on & revisiting of the sexual abuse she suffered could have affected her mentally. A must read.
i'm in awe of simone. i know she must be terribly disappointed to have fought so hard to get back to the olympics only to struggle so much with her mental health while there, and i want her to have an experience she's proud of, without regrets. i don't say this to diminish her goals or the accomplishments of those who are competing in tokyo—because, i hope, they aren't struggling in the same way—but simone of all people has nothing to prove, and i truly think the courage it takes to protect herself and put her well-being before medals is a greater achievement than another gold around her neck.
So the streak continues: a team with Listunova and Urazova has NEVER lost to USA. They are the kids that watched the 2010 victory and the ones that grew up knowing it was possible. And now they have done what no other previous Russian team was capable, become OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS.
They have the skill, but also the mental fortitude.
Look I’m not pleased the USA team struggled, they must be disappointed, but I’m relishing that the sheer arrogance of the whole ‘Simone vs Herself,’ ‘USA could send the C team and win,’ ‘it’s not going to come down to tenths because we’re so great’ American exceptionalist narrative just got demolished within the space of an hour and a half
