Nathan Hale breaks my heart. Not just because he was executed and his very young age but the way he was treated. Nathan Hale was denied a minister, a bible and the last letters he ever wrote–his true last words, were burned up, his Yale diploma was flaunted in front of a friend who was in a British prison at the time.
Even after his death! Did Nathan Hale receive any good treatment after his execution? No! Nathan Hale’s body was left swinging on the apple tree where he was hung for several days after his death, he had food, rocks, sticks thrown at his corpse. He had terrible signs tacked to his body and he had British soldiers spitting on him. He was utterly defiled and his body was partially rotten when they finally buried him–in an unmarked grave unclothed where we have never found and no where he is buried, we don’t even have an exact picture of where he was hanged!
Nathan Hale isn’t just a man who was killed at a young age, his body and himself was defaced in front of the city for days after. Even after his death, he received no peace and was not allowed to be honored. Nathan Hale is more than just a tragic figure of American history, he was one who deserved better.

There’s nothing I don’t love about this. The way Washington is looking at his favorite son, Hamilton sitting a chair away but desperately trying to be a part of their conversation (although neither of them seem to be paying him any attention), and that other guy being the only one concerned with Arnold’s suspicious business… its all too good.

Thinking about how the only reason Burr was caught in 1807 even though he was dressed head-to-toe in a ‘disguise’ was because Nicholas Perkins recognized him by his fancy New York boots.
