thank you @uhoh-but-yeah-alright @allwaswell16 @kingsofeverything land @lululawrence for tagging me lately to share a snippet <3 I haven't been writing much because of *gestures vaguely* everything, but I did get a start on the present day of my When Harry Met Sally AU:

“You haven’t changed that yet?” “I’m going to, I just–” “Zayn, it’s been months.” “I know, but–” “What is it, one form? Give it to me, I’ll fill it out. You have to stop dragging this breakup out.” “You’re right, you’re right, I know you’re right.” Harry sits back in her chair, blowing out a breath as her friends argue. She’d promised herself that she would share her news before they ordered drinks, but all three of them are on their second mimosa, and a runner just brought out their food. It’s not like she can get a word in edgewise, though, not after Zayn inadvertently revealed that her toxic ex is still her emergency contact. Nick is like a pit bull, refusing to let that bit of information slide. Maybe brunch wasn’t the best opportunity to tell them.

“The way I see it,” Louis says, shrugging, “there’s not much a boyfriend could give me that I can’t get from my own hand or a stranger in a bar.” Harry feels a shiver run down his spine as Louis looks at him, his piercing blue eyes feeling like they’re staring straight through him. “What do you think, Harry?” Louis asks. “Want to be a stranger in a bar tonight?”

So while Louis’ proposition is preposterous, it’s also the only compromise his brain seems willing to make at the moment.

Harry slowly raises his head to look at Louis. He’s standing on the other side of the kitchen, elbow resting casually on the edge of the counter next to the sink. His expression is soft and patient, and there’s delicate morning sunlight streaming through the kitchen windows behind him, setting his outlined silhouette aglow. He looks like an angel.

An angel in an old oversized adidas jumper with tattoos on his knuckles, but an angel all the same.

Harry’s voice comes out mumbled and much smaller than he’d like, but it is what it is. As Louis always says.

“Just shampoo?”

(Or five times Louis saves Harry from himself, and one time when Louis is the one that needs the saving).

Louis shuffles forward in the line at Starbucks, in desperate need of caffeine. She doesn’t know what she was thinking when she booked a 9 A.M. flight. It’s like she forgot all about things like cab rides and security lines until she actually had to set her alarm last night. Now if only the people in front of her would hurry up, she could get her hands on some coffee and start feeling human. Both cashiers taking orders call out “Next!” practically in unison, and Louis shuffles forward again, wondering which traveler will get through their order first. “Hi, I’d like a grande latte, but I’d like it iced, please. But light ice. And with soy milk instead of two percent, if you have it.” Louis frowns, something tugging at the back of her brain. “And I’d like two pumps of the vanilla syrup and two pumps of caramel, please.” Oh. Louis’ eyes widen. Oh. That’s why the woman outside with Jo Buckley had looked so familiar. The fucking apple pie with strawberry ice cream. Louis has never forgotten the expression on the waitress’ face as she took that order in the diner in the middle of nowhere. Or the girl who’d placed it, seemingly completely unaware of how ridiculous it was.  Louis tries to be subtle as she watches the woman walk past the coffee bar to wait for her order. Harry Styles. Her curls are cut short. She has the bone structure to pull it off, but Louis prefers the long hair she’d had when they made that god-awful drive together. Her outfit isn’t as femme either, she’s in a flannel shirt and artfully ripped jeans. There’s a small rainbow pin on her tote bag and a silver ring on almost every long finger. Louis would have to be either straight or blind to miss the signaling, and she smiles to herself as she walks up to the cashier to order.  Good for her.
