ACOSF chapter 36 with no context

Gwyn and Azriel’s encounter in the bonus chapter was Gwyn’s first time alone with a male. She was out of the Library and it was night, no one else around.

Yet she wasn’t uncomfortable, she wasn’t afraid. She smiled and made him smile, they talked and laughed despite knowing each other for a few months at best. They enjoy each other company even though they both aren’t the sociable type, for different reasons.

She gave him an excuse to leave because she knows he likes to be alone, but he didn’t take it. He thought about turning back and leaving before seeing whoever was in the pit, but when he saw Gwyn and she openly offered a way out—he decided to stay. He wanted to stay. She could have make up an excuse and go back to the Library, but she decided to remain as well.

They chatted and Azriel—someone who is very reserved—opened up and confessed something about himself. Something that could be disregarded as nothing of importance in other circumstances, and yet we know this because of Gwyn, a girl he doesn’t consider his friend. (I don’t know about you, Az, but something doesn’t spark in my chest at the thought of a friend, much less a stranger :/ )

He aimed for the training pit to work off his rage and frustration, yet he did nothing of the sort. He talked with Gwyn and by the end of the chat something restless settled inside of him—no need of working out anymore. Gwyn’s presence singlehanded managed to calm him down.

Gwyn, in the small time she’s been knowing Azriel, came to trust him. This male who is inevitably associated with her worst memory, who saw her at her lowest, vulnerable and broken. Despite knowing and having seeing with her own eyes what he can do, how ruthless he can be, she still sees him as someone worth of her trust. She sees him for who he is, not the things he has done. And I think it’s really beautiful how Sarah highlighted that last part.

We have the contrast between the scene with Elain (“she had no idea that he had done unspeakable things that sullied his hands far beyond their scars”) and the next with Gwyn, where despite his hands being on plain sight, Gwyn’s attention focused on them as he demonstrated how to cut the ribbon, the thought didn’t cross his mind.

Just like she is comfortable with him enough to not worry about being outside of her sanctuary—in the middle of the night with a male for the first time in two years—he is comfortable with her enough to let go of his biggest insecurity and vulnerability, one that he’s been carrying with himself for centuries.

I also love how the chapter ended with Azriel smiling at the thought of Gwyn, showing once again how her mere presence or mention can make Azriel feel at peace :)

If you’ve read this far, am I the only one who gets strong Rowaelin vibes from Gwyn and Azriel? I feel like their relationship could be similar to theirs, minus the enemies part of course.

Shadows darkened his eyes, full of enough pain that she couldn’t stop herself from touching his shoulder. Letting him see that she understood why he stood in the doorway, why he wouldn’t go near the fire. 

His secret to tell, never hers. 

Azriel’s face remained neutral. So Nesta gave him a small nod […]

“I didn’t get you anything.”

“I know, I don’t mind.”

“What is it?”

“You can attach this to whatever book you’re reading, and the little ball of faelight will shine. So you don’t have to squint when you’re reading at night.”

[…] She tapped it again and it turned off. And then she jumped to her feet and flung her arms around Azriel.

The room went silent for a beat.

But Azriel chuckled and squeezed her gently. […] “Thank you,” Nesta said, quickly pulling away to marvel at the device. “It’s brilliant.”

Azriel blushed and stepped back, shadows swirling.

I will address two things:

Gwyn and Nesta's first meeting

Comparing Gwyn to Ianthe (TW: mention of SA)

So here goes

Gwyn and Nesta's first meeting:

So, I've heard that some claim Gwyn was rude to Nesta on their first meeting but let's revisit their first scene together;

Gwyn marked the change. “I don’t need your pity.” The words were sharp, as clear as her teal eyes. “It wasn’t pity.” “I’ve been here for nearly two years, but I haven’t become so disconnected from others that I can’t tell when someone remembers why I am here and alters their behavior.” Gwyn’s mouth flattened to a line. “I don’t need to be coddled. Only spoken to like a person.”

Gwyn's "rudeness" as some put it up was not rudeness at all. Nesta slightly changed her attitude around Gwyn when she remembered why the priestesses were here and what they have gone through. Gwyn caught the slight change and called her out on it, not wanting her pity or to be coddled. She wants to be spoken to like a person and not a victim. So I don't get where this talk of "Gwyn being rude to Nesta" when it was her not wanting to be treated differently and rightly so.

After Gwyn leaves Nesta was literally wondering about her having two "friendly" conversations in one day with Clotho and Gwyn. She called her conversation with Gwyn friendly.

If you're gonna use Gwyn being rude as an argument to prove that she is shady or evil, we might as well use Elain's shadiness in ACOSF as evidence of her turning evil.

Comparing Gwyn to Ianthe:

What is there to compare in the first place?

Because they both have Teal eyes? They both are priestesses? Like, truly, what is there to compare them about when one is a SA survivor and the other is a reputable predator? A rapist and assaulter? aren't you degrading Gwyn as character by even trying to draw a connection between her and Ianthe to prove a point to a theory that Gwyn is.. evil?

That is shitty especially without considering the feelings of SA survivors who have spoken time and again about their feelings and who see themselves through Gwyn, a character despite her trauma that showcased her inner strength and capacity to love and care about others.

I do not understand why some are bent on ruining and bringing down the character representing SA survivors and whose SA was brought upfront to all the readers.

so saying that 2 characters who have had maybe 4 lines of dialogue in the entire series are not essential to the story is racist, but comparing a sexual assault survivor to an actual rapist is fine so long as a trigger warning is in place? that’s how this fandom is going to move forward?

this is so beyond fucking offensive i don’t even know where to start. and yeah i take it personally as a sexual assault survivor myself. if this is where the fandom is heading, tearing one person down for talking about headcannon friendships and then a few days later thinking that there’s nothing wrong with saying a victim of sexual violence is comparable to a known rapist is ok then i don’t think i want to be here anymore. 

and this isn’t even just about gwyn. i can separate fiction from fact just fine. this is about the fucking audacity that this fandom seems to have about using social issues to their advantage when it comes to their ships. racism and sexual violence are not for you to manipulate to suit your shipping preferences.

Bitch Emerie likes to Garden. I don't see hate for her. Nesta, Aelin, Lysandra and many more females in the SJM books are feminine we don't give them hate for that. Elide can't fight and prefers to use her wits to solve her problems I don't see any slander for her. So PLEASE explain to me why we would dislike Elain for those reasons...

The Mating Bond is a song, a melody, in SJM's books.

Azriel and Gwyn are mates, I don't see it any other way. The parallels are uncanny. SJM has a pattern when it come to mates in her books. The more I find them, the more I am convinced.

He can hear and feel things others can't.

He heard the song of his soul to which his shadows sang back to.

Both in TOG and ACOTAR, mating bonds always, always have musical references.

Rhys sent Feyre music in her cell, Cassian gifted Nesta a symphonia, Aelin played the piano for Rowan and Rowan gifted her a royal theater as their mating gift, Gwyn is the first person Azriel admits to that he sings. As for Lucien, his and Elain's mating bond chanted to him.

Put on house arrest by forces beyond her control

Copes by reading a lot- especially romance novels

Would rather sit on a rock for 2 hours than have someone watch her work out

Has already had one civil conversation today a second would really be asking far too much

Loves Gwyn and Emerie with the force of a thousand suns

Is a low key Gwynriel shipper

Just wants a damn drink thank you very much

Doesn’t wash her bed sheets often enough…

Cannot do abdominal exercises

Thinks Rhys is an arrogant prick

Emotionally unavailable but wants intamacy

Said “oh fuck off” out loud to Elain (and finds her wildly uninteresting)

Loves a good bath

Is in love with Cassian

Nesta being mother-blessed? How she hopes history remembers Cassian’s name and her name like they did Enalius? Emerie and Gwyn and Nesta becoming Valkyries and that, too, being blessed by Fate and The Mother?

I think this is the most important story in the acotar universe and it is not over even if their book is. And the fact that Sarah gave it to Nesta, the most complex yet relatable character? The one most people wanted to see fail?

I have never felt more seen.
