Hi Light and L! So I have to write an essay for English Lit about the 'role and dramatic significance of Maria in the play Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare' and I was wondering if you could help me out. It has to be 8 paragraphs long but I can only think of 4 points to write about. Thanks in advance, and I promise a generous donation of cake and justice for your help.
Light: Hi anon, thank you for your ask! We have to admit to not being Shakespeare buffs but we’ll try to help you out best we can. Maria was a servant in Lady Olivia’s household in Twelfth Night, and her role in the play (in my opinion) breaks down like this:
1. Depicts the unpredictability of love: while at the beginning of the play Maria criticizes Sir Toby’s drunkenness, they became lovers and got married in the end
2. Acts as a brainy, witty jokester and pushes the comedic subplot of the play by playing a prank on the house steward Malvolio by forging a ‘ love letter’ from her mistress Olivia. Maria helps establish the play’s playful and rebellious spirit, and is someone who likes to have fun. Besides that, Maria is the rational one and the architect of the (perhaps slightly cruel) jokes in her group of co-conspirators.
3. Represents vengeance/revenge: her motivation for her pranks on Malvolio are due to how she feels he treats her and the other household members unkindly. By the end, Maria escapes servitude and becomes a member of the gentry. This is particularly apt revenge on Malvolio, who is technically her boss and also dreams of rising in social standing. She achieves exactly what he cannot and becomes his social superior.
4. Represents the power of women, but turning the trope on its head by having Maria use her brains vs. her looks/charms to have a happy ending and ultimately improve her status in the world. She’s also quite a persuasive lady, able to convince others to join in on the joke and able to mislead Olivia into believing Malvolio mad.

Did you know there's a musical about you guys coming to the US?
Light: A musical? Whatever would it be about? Why we’re just two boring detectives working in obscurity to try and solve a case. Nothing noteworthy about that, not at all.
L: Plus, clearly they’ve never heard Light-kun sing. The show would be canceled right away.

Hi, Light and L! Bit of a big question stemming from a week and a half long debate in my US history class, and it's all centered on JFK's assassination. A lot of us, myself included, believe there was more than one shooter; a few of us think the CIA and/or Secret Service was involved, seeing as though a lot of files on it are being withheld and the original story from the Warren Commission doesn't add up. So I'm wondering, what do YOU guys think really happened on that day?
Light: Hi dankcancermeme, thanks for your question. We’re glad to see you’ve taken an interest in US history, and this tragic event has still captivated historians and conspiracy theorists for decades because there is still so much uncertainty about what happened.
L: There’s over a hundred books written and mountains of documents related to JFK’s death, and we aren’t going to tell you what to think. But here’s a good list of online resources including the National Archives, websites proposing various theories, interviews and news coverage during that time, etc. They might help inform your own opinions. Hey Light. So, I am back in college now working on my second semester for my degree in science. I am currently taking History, which I haven't had in a class since highschool. I am struggling with understanding what the questions are asking and interpreting the answer from the book. I usually end up having to look up the answer on my computer and it is very frustrating that a simple concept like reading comprehension is causing me so much grief. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks for reading!
Light: Hi anon, thank you for your ask and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. When learning something completely new and full of details (like places, dates, and names as with History texts), it is not a bad idea to brush up on how to maximize reading comprehension to retain what is most important in the reading passage. Also, do not feel bad if your comprehension isn’t perfect right off the bat– it is a skill that can be improved like any other. Academic reading is different from reading for pleasure, and you’ll get the most out of it if you approach it with a strategy in mind. Such as:
- Scan the passage to get a general idea of what it’s about before you start
- Make notes in the margins as you read, or have your notes nearby so you can jot down impressions, questions, ideas, etc. These might also be a valuable resource if/when you need to write an essay later, or pinpoint places to ask your professor about.
-Summarize occasionally. Some people can do this mentally, but we recommend to write it so you can review it later. Working in a study group can help with this too because you can compare your understanding of the passage.
-Take time to look up new words you don’t understand if it prevents you from understanding the text. Academic disciplines are full of terms and jargon but some are important to master
L: In your particular case, if you are having issues with the questions at the end of the reading, maybe read those questions first, then read the chapter/passage with those questions in mind. Once you’ve primed yourself to think about those questions, your brain will be more likely to seek the answers in what you read.
And Light-kun, it slightly bothers me that you’re dispensing advice about memorizing names…..

This method stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, and is explained in detail in the link above.
