The Anti-Ecto Acts... could literally start WW3
I am sitting here, contemplating China. The country. Literally one of THE OLDEST countries. With a truely massive population. And... I will admit my ignorance. But from what I have heard? They are big on honoring the Dead.
Their Dead.
The Dead of China. Hundreds of millions of souls. Which, statistically, would mean the average human ghost has a good chance to come from the region. And they are not alone.
Again, my ignorance curses me, but if my general knowledge is to be believed? It is a common practice in Asianic Countries. Oh sure, they won't argue there might be BAD ghosts. But that's to be expected! There are bad PEOPLE! They die.
They have monks and priests for such things. Specialists. Ancient problem, tried and true solutions. They move on and have lunch, consider what options there are for dinner. Business of the day and all that.
But THEN.
Fanatics from the West. Painting themselves as Men Of Science, not only dare to play god, but tear open a hole to THE AFTERLIFE? And start ATTACKING indiscriminately? They stand before an international stage and spew clearly bigoted pseudoscience, to justify their genocide, while ALSO letting God's and demons run roughshod over the WORLD, just so they can try to convince everyone they have the right to MURDER YOUR ANCESTORS?
They OPENED THAT GATE! They LET THEM OUT! There is a difference, culturally, for many of your countries between the soul of a dead man (powers be damned) and a SPIRIT OF LIVING STORMS.
You are not IDIOTS. Tigers are dangerous. Wolves are dangerous. But someone walking into a crowded mall and releasing frightened wild animals DOES NOT mean we go into the wilds and start killing! We charge the madmen you attacked innocent people!
The fact that tigers and wolves are dangerous IS NOT NEW. The fact that the souls of the dead are dangerous is ALSO not new! It is not malicious. It is INHERENT. A state of being. That is why they are not encouraged to linger! We love them, but this world is not built for them. It is fragile and barren, built for the living.
But dear sweet FUCK, the WROTH.
How? Many countries EXACTLY. How many religions? SPECIFICALLY honor and protect the dead. Declare in no uncertain terms, the SANCTITY of the soul?
How many people have LOST somebody? A friend, a lover, a CHILD.
And in one breath you give them hope then THREATEN it? "They may still be out there... we are going to brutally torture them to death. Because your loved ones are animals to us."
The UN would have the SINGLE most ugly, barely contained, riot imaginable. Spiritual Leaders would be tearing CHUNKS out of the US. The Pope, the Dalai Lama, you name it. You can NOT invade THE AFTERLIFE and not have it IMMEDIATELY become a religious concern.
Not to mention the international SAFETY concern. One countries actions? Unleashing beings that can effect the GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM? The ENTIRE planets weather? Plunged EVERYONE into Eternal Sleep??! How can that not be considered DILBERATE after the first one!
Your grand idea is to ANTAGONIZE them? Make MORE of them come through??
"Kill death itself". You fanatical NUTJOBS! That's not even a NEW hypothetical! That ends HORRIFICLY for literally EVERYONE. Eternal starvation, suffocation, crushing, and worse! We suck the planet dry, over populate so horrifically we end up BURIED UNDER OUR OWN CHILDREN, and suffer FOREVER without the release of death!
You fucking MORONS! Eternal life is a well known CURSE!
Their science is shaky at best, hardly peer reviewed. DEEPLY unethical. And clearly dangerous! Radioactive!!! In a population center?! How many innocent people have been exposed!?
And if the Ghost are reaching OUT? Imagine meeting long dead countrymen, who come to you fearing for their very SOULS. Who have lived in peace. Unknown to you, for CENTURIES. Who beg you, in YOUR native tounge, to help. Talks of people disappearing. Fear and desperation.
This is not to say world leaders are great and benevolent figures, free of greed or sin. Nor their governments. But it is quite another thing entirely, when they talk... and all you can think is "you are talking about my dead father. My late wife. My deceased son."
When they spew their HATE. And back hand your loved ones by doing so.
What powerful person has not lost SOMEBODY.
All this? And I have not even TOUCHED on the shit storm DC would add on top. The Drama? The IMMEDIATE near certain SMITING? You want to MURDER Superman's FAMILY??? I'd say pick a god and pray, but you've already made enemy of ALL of them.
So... good luck and get fucked?

I was walking through the toy aisle at Target when I found this thing and had a VIOLENT AND IMMEDIATE FLASHBACK to when JP first came out and they had a bunch of REALLY COOL T Rex toys that I would have sold one of my scrawny small-child limbs for but my mother wouldn’t get me one because they were “too violent and also ate people” :(

Maybe a weird question, I have next to no experience with hospitals and so what I see on tv is where I get most of my knowledge, whether it's accurate or not. Does everyone who gets admitted have a heart rate monitor put on at all times? What other sensors are attached? Is an IV always inserted if they're admitted too?
Good question!
I'll answer the IV question first since it's the easiest. Almost all patients admitted to the hospital will have an IV unless they refuse. These are used to administer drugs and fluids, and also very helpful in an emergency. If the patient is getting continuous fluids, a blood transfusion, or IV medication over an extended period of time, they'll be attached to a pump. Otherwise the port will just be capped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What monitoring equipment is used is based on what is wrong with the patient and what part of the hospital they are admitted to.
Typically, hospitals have 3 levels of acuity (how much care a patient needs): Critical Care, Telemetry, and Med-Surg. There may be multiple units/floors that fall under these categories, but their monitoring capabilities would be similar. Of these, I have worked med-surg and tele.
Med-Surg is typically the lowest level of acuity. This is where most patients are admitted. Think things like pneumonia, cellulitis, heart failure exacerbations, COPD or asthma exacerbations, as well as where someone might stay for a few days after most surgeries. Depending on the size of the hospital, there may be multiple specialized med-surg floors (say, one just for lung problems, one just for orthopedic surgeries, one just for trauma, etc...), or just one or two where all diagnoses end up.
Med-surg does not have heart monitors, but may have SpO2 (the amount of oxygen in the blood, measured with a probe on a finger or ear), EtCO2 (the amount of carbon dioxide in exhaled breath measured with a specialized nasal cannula), and apnea (whether the person is breathing and how many breaths per minute they are taking) monitors for overnight use in patients with sleep apnea or who have lung problems. These readings are displayed on tiny screens above the patient's bed or transmitted to the nursing station. When patients are up and walking around, they are typically not monitored.
Tumblr media
Otherwise, vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, temperature, and SpO2) are taken about every 4-8 hours depending on the patient's condition.
Telemetry units are similar to med-surg units, but they have the additional ability to monitor continuous (3- or 5-lead) EKGs (heart rhythm waveforms). While they can take all higher-acuity med-surg patients, they can specifically also take patients who are admitted for heart rhythm problems. This is important to monitor how a new medication might be working to control a heart rhythm, or monitor for a dangerous heart rhythm.
Most tele units I've worked on have not had the patient monitors in the rooms. The patients carry little packs around in their gowns that connect to the leads on their chests. The packs transmit the EKG data (and optionally SpO2 data if that probe is also attached) to a computer screen at the nurses station and sometimes to a screen or two in the hallway for easy visibility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes, if the hospital uses a communication system like Vocera (think little voice-activated cell phones that clip to your scrubs), the packs can also directly communicate to the Vocera and tell the patient's nurse if a heart rhythm changed (the lil computer voice hilariously mispronounces the names of heart rhythms. It's lovely). Or more frequently (like, waaaay more frequently) that the battery in the pack needs changed or that a lead fell off.
(Note- most alarms in med-surg and tele are "false" alarms and the system manufacturers know it. There's a system that has this quiet little "meep meep" sound for apnea (not breathing). Hilariously, it so infrequently actually detects apnea that the sound basically alerts you that the patient is probably breathing but the cannula fell off please help? But anyway, alarm fatigue (not being able to hear any alarms because there are just so many all the time) is a thing.)
Because this can get annoying, sometimes hospitals have people who's job it is to watch the monitors from a central location and call the associated nurses if they see something that looks actually wrong.
Critical Care includes all intensive care units, the emergency department, and any post anesthesia care units (PACU). This is where there are actual hardwired EKG, SpO2, automatic blood pressure, and other sensors that connect straight to a monitor behind the person's bed. They also transmit to the nurses station and Vocera systems if applicable.
In order to have this normal set of sensors (everything seen on the monitor screen below except the two yellow lines and second BP reading), the patient typically has 5 electrodes on their chest, a blood pressure cuff on their arm, a glowing red sticker on their finger or ear, and a cannula in their nose (both for providing oxygen and measuring respiratory rate). All of these require a separate cord to the monitor (or a box transmitting this to the monitor).
Tumblr media
In addition to these, ICUs often have systems that can monitor continuous blood pressure via a little catheter in an artery, systems that can monitor pressure inside the skull with a sensor surgically placed in the brain, specific blood pressures in the lungs and heart with special sensors placed in the vasculature, and other invasive and non-invasive monitoring sensors.
Since people in ICU-level care more often have monitors both correctly placed and correctly maintained and since the patients are typically sicker and more likely to have a sudden change in condition, the alarms are statistically more reliable.

Ok so I was looking for historical slang terms for penis (gotta be era-accurate when writing vintage dick jokes) and I came across….something
Tumblr media
some linguist compiled a literal timeline of genitalia slang–a cock compendium, if you will–that dates back all the way to the fucking 13th CENTURY. This motherfucker tracked the evolution of erection etymology through 800+ years, because if he doesn’t do it, who else will? Thank you for your service, Johnathon Green.

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

to uk peeps
so you guys are facing down yet another global warming summer and as an american i feel entitled to barge over and give you a lot of advice about how to live your life. also i’m used to surviving 90-110 degree summers (32—43 celsius) with no ac. so here we go.
you need to drink  a lot of water. on average you should be drinking about two liters. on hot days, double that.
fill plastic water bottles halfway up and stick them in your freezer. take them out once they’ve frozen and fill the rest up with water, drink the water, fill it up again, and carry it around with you until it’s time to get the next ice bottle. also you can put the icy end against your throat or over your chest for maximum refreshment.
consider making a lot of sun tea. get big glass jars or a pitcher. put a bunch of your preferred teabags in it with some sugar. if you want to be an american southerner, your tea should be green or black and your sugar amount should be enough to kill a child. if you want to be sane, put in as little sugar as you can get away with so it’s not dehydrating, and stick with herbal teas because the last thing you want during the heat of the day is a caffeine boost. leave your tea on a windowsill. after a few hours it’s steeped and you can put it in the fridge. tadaaa.
fruit juice, soda pop, beer, and a lot of sports drinks like gatorade all dehydrate you, and in really hot weather they’re dangerous because people will drink them instead of water. drink an equal amount of water as anything with sugar. see prior point about sun tea.
when you sweat you lose salt. so don’t feel bad about eating some junk food.
freeze grapes. eat the grapes. repeat.
get a hat with a brim. baseball caps are ok but wide brimmed hats are better because they shadow the back of your neck and that’s one less thing to have to worry about.
don’t wear knit caps. just… no.
you don’t get more sunburned because it’s hot, you get more sunburned because when it’s hot you wear less clothes. so don’t freak out.
if you don’t have AC you can put a bowl of ice behind a fan. this creates a swamp cooler, by pulling the air over the ice. also, put on a wet t-shirt and sit in front of it, and you’ll cool further by evaporation.
speaking of evaporation, watch out if it’s humid. you don’t cool down from sweating as much when the air’s already saturated. drink more water, have more salt, and change your shirt a lot.
heatstroke is serious shit, and kids and the elderly are prone to it. but whatever your age, if you feel nauseous, headachy, or short of breath, the heat’s getting to you. pour your water bottle over your head and go sit in the shade. keep an eye on friends and family as well.
if someone stops sweating when they’re still out in the heat, that’s serious business and get them medical treatment as soon as possible. it’s a case of dehydration and/or heatstroke.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”
