what do you find most effective when it comes to dealing with negative emotions?

i love feeling bad from time to time, i always just fully lean into it. when i was a kid i'd chew holes inside my cheeks while i read at night until they'd bleed and then i'd have horrible sores that would ache for days afterwards, but sometimes i'd bite the sores between my teeth and make them hurt even worse because when i let go, for a moment they wouldn't hurt at all. i think life as a whole is kind of like that.
