I see a lot of posts going around talking about the need to be critical of fanfic, and how we gotta watch out for the messages we’re sending
Well, here’s one thing I’m gonna need us to be critical about:
Every statistic I’ve ever seen says fanfic authors are heavily female (or nb)
And Tumblr, which is a fairly US-centric cross-section of fandom, is filled with this discourse about fanfic writers who create pornography
I need us to stop and think about why we’ve decided that fictional sex is the most damaging thing anyone could ever find on the internet
I need us to think about the culture we live in, which encourages us to be sexually available (to straight men) but punishes us if we (sluts) enjoy it
Because here’s the thing: fanfic is not coming from a position of power and prestige in our society
It is a niche genre primarily written by women, for women, for free
And it is a place where many of us do find power in exploring our own sexuality (or asexuality)
Even when that exploration takes us to gritty, horrifying (or cathartic) places
I’m going to need us to think long and hard about why we’re prioritizing fictional characters over the needs of real women
And I’m going to need it to stop

Inktober 2019 - day 11
Beren and Luthien <3
(He’s not short - she’s just tall)
This is defo not the best one in the series but hey, Inktober is about practice, and I’m desperate to make my illustrative style more laid back and expressive. These two will need a re-design, but oh yes I’ll keep the height difference. And maybe also her face like a bedside lamp that you can’t switch off

Another painting of Vimes/Keel and young Sam from Night Watch because Night Watch is awesome. And it really yanked on my heartstrings with that wrenching scene in the Cable Street watch house (if you’ve read the book, then you know what scene I’m talking about)!
But for those who don’t know this scene, Vimes is comforting young Sam (his younger self, because time travel) because he just saw some horrible things.

Me, desperately trawling AO3: Well, this fic doesn’t appear to fit my headcanons at all, but I’m kind of desperate, so let’s try it anyway.

“jonsa” now only refers to joncon meeting sansa and he’s charmed by her harp playing skills and impressed by her ability to properly dye her red roots so he gives her an alison bechdel book to aid her in her baby gay journey. “jonerys” now refers to joncon meeting dany and imprinting on rhaegar’s baby sister like a mama duck and being the father figure she wants so bad and they can bond over being exiles who think sellswords are hot as fuck

did anyone else get a weird thrill as a kid from correctly imitating Normal Kid Things
like I would drink a Coca Cola (hating every sensory moment) and feel excited about participating in a Normal activity. I listened to 20 second samples of Avril Lavigne songs at Barnes and Noble and think, “oh yes, this is what normal American children do, look at me, I’m doing it too”

Do you sometimes read a fic writer’s work, and just… thank all the gods this person managed to get obsessed with the same fictional people you did?

there is a tendency with history, i think, because we're so far removed from it, to kind of forget that all of the people were people
a child 10,000 years ago left a handprint on a wall. they were fingerpainting. a viking climbs up a rock just to carve the words "this is very high" 10ft off the ground. somebody centuries... milennia... ago burned their dinner so thoroughly that they buried the ruined pot in the backyard rather than attempt to clean it. shakespeare got drunk and wrote dick jokes. tutankhamun was a little boy who liked ducks more than anything. a roman carves his name into a monument in another country saying "i was here". a prisoner, centuries ago, in the tower of london scratches lines into the wall as a tally marking the days. a medieval monk scrawls in the margins bemoaning the boredom of his work.
every human being across history has said "i was here. i lived. i loved. i made something. i laughed. i cried. please do not forget me"

Laws and Customs among the Andalites (aka The Great Andalite Sex Meta)
(a brief ooc note - this meta is written from the perspective of an in-universe human researcher; consider it an early draft of their collected notes. also, I want to note that Andalite culture and customs are distinct from human culture and customs, and their concepts of gender and sex are purposefully different. nothing here is meant to be Good Representation, just what I personally think is most likely when it comes to our favorite scorpion deer. also I have to thank @nikosheba for her invaluable assistance and co-authorship of much of this work because without her this never would have gotten codified - she’s the other person authoring this hypothetical research paper. eventually this will be crossposted to AO3? but in the meantime, here.)
This paper is a summary of information collected through a series of detailed interviews with Andalites on the subject of Andalite sexuality and gender, focusing on mating behavior in order to highlight how and why they are different from humans. This is not a comprehensive examination of all relevant factors, but as no scholarship on this subject yet exists, it can be considered a beginning to human xenological examinations of our greatest and first alien allies.
