hye jin and du shik are anything but toxic 😭😭 hye jin showed insane emotional maturity in this episode by deciding to wait for du shik to open up and even before that she was sure they wouldn’t break up even though she was sad and insecure about him not opening up to her. she knows nothing about his trauma when she tells him she needs a break but after receiving more information she opens all channels of communication and offers support to him. similarly du shik makes sure to reassure her as much as he can; for example when she buys the necklace and he makes her a jewellery box for it or how he goes along with her bucket list ideas even if some of them were childish. after he kisses her for the first time he makes sure to clarify that he likes her a lot and wants a relationship. talking about his trauma will obviously take time but he is trying his hardest to be able to do so for the sake of their relationship.

sikhye have open mature communication, and they understand each other’s emotional needs. i do think it’s because they were friends first before they dated but they both think of the relationship as long term even if hye jin isn’t sure whether she’ll be staying in gongjin and du shik cannot make himself think about the future in fear of raising his hopes. there were many points in the drama where they could have become toxic- du shik could’ve rejected her in ep10 or hye jin could’ve broken up with him in ep 14, but they didn’t. instead they chose the route that has both their interests at heart even if they need to compromise a little. and isn’t that what a healthy relationship is? nothing but a little bit of give and take? they just want to make each other happy.

they are both very fractured broken people but they handle each other and their relationship with the utmost care and thoughtfulness and in the end that’s all that matters.
