reading Michelle Remembers finally and while I know psychiatry in the 70s and 80s looked different than now and i'm not an expert on either eras, the knowledge that this book sparked anything at all let alone the Satanic Panic is absolutely mindboggling because its a top contender for the biggest load of bullshit ive ever seen in my life award and thats putting it delicately

I've been sent the "a common response to 'how are you?' in norwegian is 'up and not crying'" tiktok a few times and while thats not a phrase in my area (dialect dependent i suspect) it alwsys makes me think about the phrase 'dyra skal ha mat' which doesnt mean the same thing but is said with the same feeling, kind of
'the livestock must be fed' is what you say when it's a bad day but work needs doing, when you're in crisis but there are chores to be done, when you want to blow your brains out on the kitchen wall but the cows haven't been milked yet and if you leave them they'll hurt. it's what you say when you put yourself aside to do what has to be done, and it's not a great self-sacrifice, it's just life.

I really wish when people came to me and were like ‘how do I become a farmer?’ they channeled that energy into ‘how do I get a job in agriculture’
Because to be totally honest, a lot of people do not like being farmers. A lot of people that think hobby farms are cute, will not like being farmers. It’s not work you can do with half a heart because it’s work that takes all of you. You don’t exist as a person until your commitments to the land and your animals are fulfilled. As a disabled person I am constantly aware that my days of doing the work I do are numbered. I am constantly aware that if I do not have the people I need around me, those things will not get done.
So I don’t work as a farmer.
I make just as much impact in agriculture working for a machinery dealership (8-5 primarily office job), as I did working in a feedlot, as I did working on any farms that I’ve ever been on. No, it’s not playing with calves or staring at cows, but it gives me the ability to prioritise those interests in a way that I have always wanted to. It gives me the ability to go home on the weekends and do those 6 hours in the cattle yards, because I’ve worked up the spoons to be there.
Agriculture as an industry has hooks in nearly every sector you can think of. It has more jobs than you could ever imagine. But also I’m bad at being concise so pls read this post from onegirlandhercows on instagram:

if I take all of this at face value and believe everything I read, and I haven't researched it and see no reason why I shouldn't, this isn't a book about child abuse by a satanic cult. this is a book about a patient and a therapist forming their own little two-piece sect, and inventing a whole reality through the power of suggestion that just happens to make them both terribly important people. if these invented memories were experienced as real (and i haven't checked and see no reason why they wouldn't be) Michelle and Dr. Pazder getting divorced from their respective spouses and marrying each other seems like one of the lesser ethical breaches here.
