What would a merfolk x siren mix look like
They would look pretty much like a merfolk child but with a few hints towards their siren genes (like wavier hair and worse dark vision)
Infodumping and some biology graphs underneath.
Siren eggs have adapted to be able to handle cross fertilization, but only with certain species. The genes of the siren needs to be the dominant ones, humans have the lesser genes so they are a good candidate.
Merfolk have more dominant genes on the other hand, which would cause a load of issues. Even in the ”best case senario” the siren carrying the eggs would probably die in the prosess, the baby would simply be too large long before it could even leave the egg pouch. The incubation time for a merfolk baby is much longer as well. Siren/siren hatches after two months and siren/human after three months. But a Siren/merfolk would need between 11-12 months, and even then it would technicly be a premature birth for merfolk standard.
The most likely senario tho would be that the eggs would get absorbed by the sirens body long before that. The entire batch would get detected as unfertilized after 4 months, and the baby would either lose the egg its inside or get absorbed together with it. For that to be avoided other eggs in the batch would have to be fertilized by a human (because of the longer incubation time).
[only 3-4 of the fertilized eggs will survive, the rest will get absorbed by the strongest for nutrients]
Merfolk on the other hand dont have such adaptation. They can only reproduce within their species. (Same with humans)
There are also some social stuff that would be in the way of it happening. Merfolk are strictly monogamous and only mates with their partner, while sirens dont mate with their romantic partners.
