Chapter 7
I spent my first night of freedom on some bench at the tail end of a park. It wasn’t too far from the bus station, but it was incredibly uncomfortable. Even worse, it started snowing as soon as I started waking up.
I found a great place to hide out at in this… uh… junk yard. Anyways, I rummaged all day for some resources, and it turns out that I'm much better at this whole survival thing than I ever imagined.
That night, my sleep wasn’t the best, but what else could I have expected from sleeping in a junkyard? Nights in the bay during winter aren’t as cold as I expected…
I eventually found a river nearby to take care of some basic hygiene. It was a little awkward, but something was better than nothing at this point.
Like I said, I'm better at survival than I initially imagined. I used my nonexistent handiness skill to cobble together some off-the-grid plumbing and a cooking spot.
I even foraged enough ingredients to make myself some soup. Did it taste good? no. Did it keep me fed and warm for the next few days? yes.

Chapter 6
I texted my only friend Greta in the few moments I had between singing songs during the service
The car ride home was very awkward. No one said a word the entire time. Mom and dad got out of the car before me while I finished testing Greta. As I walked into the house after church, things kind of blew up harder than I thought they would…
Dad: First the disaster that was this morning’s phone call and now Jenni found that she’s adopted!!
mom: I’m guessing you went through her phone again? did our previous fight over this mean nothing to you?
mom: you know what? this is all your fault!! if you hadn’t been so greedy asking for more than when they had already been donating, we wouldn’t be in this situation!! jenni: OMG SO I WAS RIGHT??
mom: jenni, can’t you see the adults are talking? we’ll talk about this later. now, go to your room.
j: mom, I’m not a little kid anymore! I have so many questions! I have a right to-
dad: Jenni. please go to your room. you aren’t ready for this conversation.
but I didn’t listen… I grabbed my bag and left through the window before they could even realize that I was gone. Greta was right, I did just need to leave and find out who my birth family is. I took a one-way bus ride to Brindleton Bay and arrived later that night.

Chapter 5
Checks? College tuition? Do they even realize how loudly they’re speaking?
Mom: Jenni!! We’re leaving for church to get some stuff done early. We’ll come back to pick you up for sound check in about an hour!!
J: ok mom!! i’ll be ready!! Drive safely!!
As soon as they left, I went straight to the computer. Luckily, mom keeps all her passwords in one of these drawers at the desk. I checked their bank statements and...
Just what I feared. They've been receiving a pretty hefty check from someone named Cecelia Cruces for as far back as these online statements go...
It felt like my world was crumbling around me. My parents— no, these people that I thought were my parents aren’t even related to me? They can't be with those bank statements... How long was I meant to be in the dark about this??
I had so many thoughts running through my head, but I had to get ready. Ugh. I need to talk to someone, anyone about this. I need an outsider’s perspective…

Chapter 4
The next day, I did some snooping to quell my suspicion. None of the photo albums we had at home had pictures of mom while pregnant. Is that a clue? Or am I just being paranoid?
I even tried looking through mom and dad’s closet to see if I could find any hidden albums or boxes full of old or fragile pictures...
all I found was this one picture. she looks so perfect. ready to take me home from the hospital and be a new mom…
My parents came home right after I found that picture. We had a normal dinner and all. It was fine. Nothing really happened until the next morning, and i don't think they expected me to hear this conversation…
Dad: Amor, we only have a few more checks before Jenni ages up.
Mom: it’s already time? we won’t be able to afford the church AND this home. I really don’t want to have to move.
Dad: we’ll be fine. our church attendance is up, and they agreed to keep providing hefty donations so long as Jenni is in our care. Mom: but will that still count if she heads to college? She heads for Britechester here in a few months, AND she got a full-ride scholarship…
Dad: i don't know, amor, but i’ll fix this. I’ll try calling them tomorrow to see if they’ll cover Jenni’s college tuition. We can use that money to keep living here. I’ll make it work somehow.

Chapter 3
Later that afternoon, one question loomed in Jenni’s mind: why didn’t our blood types match? I double-checked my classwork. I know I did it right…
It probably wasn’t helpful that mom and dad had some leaders from our sister church over that night. Watcher, please help me through this —
Dad: everything ok sweetheart?
Jenni: yeah, yeah, it was just a weird day today…
Dad: tell me about it then. it’s not like your mom has much room for in her conversation
Jenni: no, it’s ok dad but thank you
After dinner, we watched mom's telenovelas in the living room. And right when the episode ended…
Mom: Could either of you have been the worst host? I had the carry the conversation the whole night!
Dad: Amor, dinner was just fine. Your roast was absolutely amazing
Mom: That doesn’t excuse your secret little conversation during dinner. What are our guests going to think of us??
J: whoa mom, it’s okay! Dad was just asking about school!
Mom: school? you’re supposed to be great at school! what did you do? are you in trouble?
J: no no, it was just a boring, tiring day…
Mom: boring? tiring? Do you know what’s tiring? working hard all day to make sure that everyone in this house is doing well but not one of you asking me how i’m doing.
J: mom, chill. it’s not that deep.
dad: you do NOT tell your mom to chill
J: you know what. i’m doing to bed I can’t do this right now.

Chapter 2
I did all the chores in the house. Neither mom nor dad had the time. Plus, this was my responsibility if I wanted to be a Watcher-honoring sim.
I spent all my time helping the church. I even learned to sing because they couldn’t imagine putting anyone else up on the alter with them.
I played the part of the perfect daughter down to the smallest detail until science class broke that down…
“Alright class, now that you’ve gathered your parents’ blood types, we will compare them to ours! Remember how we learned about Punnet squares yesterday? We’re going to practice completing one today using the evidence you gathered…”
Yesterday’s introduction was super easy, but my “evidence” didn’t match up?? I thought I understood this?? I was able to do it yesterday…
“i’ll come around to check everyone’s work here in a second! From the sounds of it, you’re getting it. Some of you, however, might need to talk to your parents about your results…
Huh, that’s weird. I’ll have to ask Greta to help me before the midterm next week. I can’t afford to lose a single point if I want to get a perfect grade in this class!

Chapter 1
We were perfect: a loving family made up of a loving couple and their perfect daughter all under the eyes of the Watcher.
We were an inseparable family.
Dad was a car salesman turned preacher. He and mom built up this church before I was even born,
Mom was a devoted wife and homemaker. She has been dad’s #1 fan since the moment they met.
But there was always something off… some level of secrecy that I was never part of. Whispering even when they thought they were home alone...
Always arguing about something although never in front of me…
But as I said, I was the perfect daughter. I had the best grades and i would have graduated valedictorian if things had stayed the same…
