While I know that there are benefits to speaking Spanish in the US because there are a lot of immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries here, I saw a tweet saying that it's useless to learn any other language but Spanish if you're American. First of all, I disagree with the idea that you should only learn a language if it'll serve some material benefit to you; I think you can learn a language for whatever reason you want, even if the only benefit is your own joy.

Secondly, depending on your community or profession, I think people overestimate how useful Spanish actually is. I teach ESL and at my old job, almost all the students spoke French or an indigenous African language. At my current job, the most frequent languages we get among our students are French, Arabic, Spanish, Indonesian, Mandarin Chinese, Burmese, and Vietnamese. My co-teacher's Spanish fluency only helps her out some of the time
