The only reason that I wanted to keep this between us in the beginning was… I wasn’t sure it would work out. But I’m not worried anymore.

There was a gorgeous, albeit extremely menacing, shot of Bedrosian realizing how rapidly he lost control of everything near the end of the episode. If the series had continued on, what can you share about how he would have factored into season 6 and the threat he posed for Magnum/Higgins? One idea was that he would run for Governor in a special election and win. Then next season he could make life really difficult for Magnum and Higgins, as well as Katsumoto. But you could also envision a one-off story or arc where he might need Magnum and Higgins to do something off the books for the good of the island, forcing them into an uneasy temporary alliance. So it felt like there were some fun possibilities with our guys now having to contend with a foil who, in addition to being wealthy, ruthless and cunning, now has unchecked power.
And what’s also interesting is that it’s because of a choice they made. Their decision created an opening for Bedrosian to take over the Governor’s mansion. Maybe a better idea would have come along or we would have pivoted to something else but that was the plan before we learned our fate.
What else had you hoped to do in season 6? It was going to be more Magnum-centric, like the first season was. We were going to unpack more of his past, meet his mom in flashback and send him back to Tidewater where we could meet his mentor. Nuzo and Nuzo’s family would also return. There were going to be a couple of new regulars.
I was also hoping to do a big Afghanistan arc. I thought season 6 could be the last season so I was approaching it with that in mind. There were a lot of other ideas and everyone was really excited about what it could be.
In a perfect world, where you got a season or so of warning, what are the storylines you wish you had been able to incorporate into the show?  In addition to meeting Magnum’s mom and his mentor, it would have been nice to have met Higgins’ dad. We’d been kicking around a story involving her dad since the second season and we just never got to it. I would have loved to have brought Nuzo back for more episodes. Dom is just so terrific and Nuzo has always been part of the ohana even though we’ve only seen him on a handful of occasions. Did you ever plan to dive into the Robin of it all? We talked about bringing in Robin so many times. There were so many different pitches over the years but the question that we kept asking ourselves was, “Does anyone really care to see him?” We know people are curious but are they really that invested in seeing him? Will it be a let down when they do?
I suspect we would have seen him eventually, especially if we could have gotten a “name,” but there were other stories and other characters that took priority.

Magnum P.I. fans, we now know — definitively! — when exactly you will have to say a very sad aloha to Thomas, Juliet et al.
Although a promo that aired this week indicated that Magnum P.I. will return from the holiday break on Jan. 3, 2024 with but a singular episode, TVLine can confirm — double-secret officially! — that the island drama will in fact come to an end that Wednesday night, with a double-episode finale airing 9 to 11 pm ET.
(It’s also worth noting that the Magnum P.I. final season DVD release, originally earmarked for Jan. 9, has officially been pushed back to Jan. 30.)

Zach recently told me that by the end of the season, there might be a ring or rings on someone's finger. What can you preview about the last two episodes of the series?
Weeks: There's a bump in the road, but all ends well. There's a little twist coming!
Have you given any thought to what you'll do next?
Weeks: Yeah, I'll be doing a play for a women's domestic abuse charity called Refuge. I can't say officially because there are a few things [left to sort out], but I'm in England right now, and I'm staying here for the foreseeable future. So, [the next project] will be British-based, that's what I'll say. It's nice to be home after so long. It'll be fun to play someone else, but we'll see [what happens]. That's what I love about this job. You never know what's around the corner.

You also got to direct your costars. How did directing them change kind of your appreciation or respect for them as actors? And how did having that knowledge of how they work impact the way you were able to actually direct them versus people who were new to you?
[...] I know that Zach is always gonna bring the comedy; I mean he’s just got epic timing. And so if I need a little levity, point the camera in his direction. It’s very helpful knowing how people work. And then I talked a lot to Stephen beforehand because he’s a real cerebral actor and I loved his storyline in my episode; it was one of my favorite things about it. I just love [the TC and Cade] relationship. I think it’s the other most important relationship in the show, other than Magnum and Higgins; I love that arc. And I thought it was very well crafted by Katie, the mirror relationship with what was going on with the homeless father and son [who are also in the storyline]. We spoke a lot about that beforehand, and he really brought it. He’s a very conscientious actor, which I really appreciate. Like, he puts a lot of thought and heart into it. And I was really pleased that I was able to direct him. He honestly didn’t really need much. It was more a case of like, “I’m gonna do this this many times, so just work around, do whatever you want with it.” And, yeah, I loved watching him work.
