Sketchy and experimenting time!

Here is an illustration of the first chapter of "Giving Sanctuary", a Sandman and Dreamling fanfic by @avelera .

It begins in 1689, in the White Horse tavern, and I tried to render the candlelight atmosphere we can see in the show. I improvised a lot with my black ink and my watercolors and wanted to keep the sketchy vibes. I had quite a hard time with Dream's all black clothes...

I totally want to draw more moments of this story! Maybe one by chapter? I'll see^^

The Sandman in a nutshell:

I had a dream where Hob managed to find Morpheus while trapped in the burgess basement still. Hob challenges the guards to a dance off then moonwalks over the binding circle, enabling Morpheus to escape.

I wonder if Hob ever asked why Morpheus didn't show up in the 1980s for their meeting and if so would Morpheus tell him the truth? That he was captured and imprisoned for over a 100 years? Would Hob be horrified at what Morpheus was implying, at the absolute traumatic experience it must have been? Hob is a good friend, he wouldn't out right show his horror because he knows Morpheus would be skittish and certaintly wouldn't believe anything Hob would tell him so Hob marches on, shows his support enough to not make Morpheus frigthened and run away.

But behind close doors? Hob would fall apart, he would remember all the ill thoughts he had carried, how he thought Morpheus was a jerk for standing him up, how he would berate Morpheus for not accepting his easy friendship, all the curse words he had uttered in the middle of the night.

And then his thoughts would turn to all he did wrong, to how he could have saved Morpheus, how he could have snuck in and broken the glass prison. He had heard about how burgess supposedly had the devil in his basement and at the time Hob had thought nothing of it, he should've, he is immortal, a being defying nature for god sake! He should have looked closer but he didn't because he was too caught up in his own self pity.

Eventually all these thoughts turns to nightmares and in the realm of the dreaming Morpheus catches on. His heart breaks for his friend, he never intended for this to happen he had merely offered an explaination for his absence, an explaination his dear friend was entitled to. Yet it seemed to have only upset him more. Morpheus wonders if all he ever does is hurt the people he love.

Excerpt from the chapter that inspired this:

“What colour suit would you want to wear? Black or white?” Gil’s heart began racing suddenly, unable to believe they were actually having this conversation about wedding planning. Their wedding! 

With their hair being polar opposite of each other, he wasn’t sure if they should wear suits to match their hair, or swap the colours to be more symbolic. That’s why he wanted his partner's input into this so he could feed his imagination some more. The answer, however, threw him for a loop. 

“Purple!” 

“Purple!?” Gil’s eyes widened, all his previous preconceptions about weddings shattering as he tried to imagine a purple dressed groom. 

Break chuckled, getting an absolute kick out of flustering Gilbert. “Gil, I can practically see all the gears turning in your pretty head,” he made a point to massage the scalp extra firmly with the words. “How about a purple so dark it’s almost black, and you can take the white suit then? I think you’d look marvelous in white to contrast what you usually wear.”

Gil relaxed into the hand massaging his head, shifting his imagination from a bright purple suit he initially had in mind, to a more toned down darker one while he opted for the white one, (already picturing all the places in which he could add black bits to). Yes, they would indeed look marvelous together like that. “I like that…” He hummed, relaxing his eyes. “I like that very much…”
