✨Reasons why teddy bears are great for depression & anxiety✨
🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸🧸
Tumblr media
[watercolor art of a teddy bear with hearts above his head. the bears name is Oliver and he loves you very much. Artist is moonbutt on DA]
1. They can help with touch starvation
Tumblr media
[a soft photo of me snuggling with Mr Oliver on my chest. the lighting is dark. I am depressed but Oliver is warm and safe. he smells like fettuccine Alfredo with extra parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.]
Put a teddy bear on your chest over your heart and snuggle your face in it's neck. Hold it's hand when you feel anxious. Grip it's little feet. Feel the soft fur against your skin. Give it a hug and cry if you need to. Snuggling with a stuffed animal helps soothe our central nervous system much like a hug from someone you love would do the same.
2. They can be used as emotional supports
Tumblr media
[a photo of Oliver. his arm is raised high to cheer you on. he is very dirty but also really happy. he does not know that he smells like beef broccoli.]
Teddy bears are great listeners. They don't judge you or expect you to change. They accept you completely as you are. And they don't mind if you cry in front of them. In fact they will even wipe your tears up with their fur.
3. They can be a great practice for grounding techniques
Tumblr media
[a photo of Oliver sitting on the ground outside back against a tree. in the background is a utility truck parked in an apartment complex parking lot. it is a cloudy day and there is a slight chill on the wind. Oliver feels like Madonna. ]
Look at your teddy bear. What does it's mouth look like? Is it smiling? What kind of eyes does it have? Does it have fur covering it's eyes? Are there any patterns on the bottom of its feet? What shape are the ears? Can you bend them? Can you move it's arms and legs? Can it dance? What kind of music does it like? Does it make any noise? How soft is it's fur? What does it smell like? Does your bear like to eat? What does it like to drink? If your bear was a food, what food would it be? (Mine would be dirty dish water) Would you eat it? (Yes)
4. They love adventures
Tumblr media
[a collage of four pictures. Top left is a photo of stinky bear wearing a COVID mask over his face while sitting in a doctor's office waiting area. He loves the music they play while he waits to be seen. Top right is a photo of Oliver sitting on an empty grocery shelf. Above him is a shelf full of hostess donuts. He has no self control. Bottom left is a photo of Oliver getting his blood pressure checked at a Walgreens pharmacy. He has high blood pressure. Bottom right is a photo of Oliver sitting below a movie theatre sign. The sign says "Railroad Square Cinema". There is grass surrounding the sign in a small circumference. Stinky bear smuggled a bag of Reese's pieces under his arm.]
If you have great anxiety about going outside, take your teddy bear with you! Having a comfort item is so soothing and severely underestimated! You can take your teddy bear anywhere you go. Doctor appointments, dentist, eye exams, the grocery store, school, the park, etc. They LOVE to explore! You can even take a picture or two while you're out!
5. They have so much personality
Tumblr media
[a collage of 6 pictures. Top left is a photo of stinky bear wearing a small red lamp shade as a hat. he is sitting on a wooden table with a completed jigsaw puzzle as the centerpiece. the lamp shade is new and expensive and probably has a spider on it. stinky bear does not care. Top right is a photo of stinky bear. he is very dirty and looks guilty. he is wondering if he smells like garlic beans and rice. he does in fact smell like garlic beans and rice. Middle left is a photo of stinky bear with a kfc 2 piece chicken and biscuit box on top of his head. this is why he smells like gravy. Middle right is a photo of stinky bear close to the camera. he wants to know if you have any games on your phone. he wants you to know that momma said it was his turn. he also wants to know if you would still love him if he was a worm. silly bear the answer is yes of course. Bottom left is a photo of stinky bear with a smug expression on his face. he looks very pleased with himself. he knows he is a stinky boy and he does not care. Bott right is a photo of stinky bear on top of a Christmas tree. how did he get up there? ]
Did you know that teddy bears are REAL??? It's true! The more time you spend with your teddy bear, the more personality it will reveal to you! Slowly but surely you will make lots of memories together. What kinds of nicknames will you come up with? What kinds of activities do you like to do together? What things make your teddy bear explode with light and love and joy?? Wouldn't you like to find out??
6. They connect you with your inner child
Tumblr media
[a collage of four pictures. Top left is a black and white picture of Oliver sitting on the steps of a children's slide. He is very overwhelmed. Top right is a picture of Oliver hiding in a wicker laundry basket in a bathroom. He is invisible but the smell of beef jerky gives him away. Bottom left is a picture of Oliver sitting in front of a yellow and green fire hydrant. Oliver looks very pleased with himself. He has vowed to never take a bath ever again. Bottom right is a picture of Oliver sitting in the middle of a train track. His head looks too big for his body. He is loved anyway.]
Teddy bears are a safe space for your inner child to be vulnerable. Especially for us child abuse survivors, teddy bears can be a great way to nourish your past self and give it a safe feeling. A teddy bear's love is like discovering a long lost family member that actually cares about you in all the best ways possible. To me, Oliver is like my son and also my grandson because I am getting old and I have no children so he will have to do. Through Oliver I found my inner child was extremely neglected and emotionally malnourished. I started treating stinky bear the way I wanted to be treated as a child- head pats, lots of cuddles, positive affirmations. Slowly I began to do that stuff for myself as well.
7. They break the stigma around mental health
Tumblr media
[a photo of stinky bear wrapped in a colorful warm fuzzy blanket. his head and body are covered and he is very cozy. the blanket keeps the stench of buttered bread and salami at bay. it is a nice day for a depression nap.]
It's okay to be depressed. It's okay to have a debilitating mental illness. It's okay if you're struggling and don't know what to do. It's okay to need help. It's okay to have a comfort item. Its okay to not want to talk about it. It's okay to fall apart. It's okay to take up space in a way that best fits you. We still have a long way to go.
8. They encourage radical acceptance, self esteem, boundaries, and much more!
Tumblr media
[a photo of Oliver sitting on the ground in front of a bridge entrance. It is late autumn. Tall dead grass surrounds the bridge entrance on both sides. there is a river in the background. Mr Oliver has spent some time reflecting on who he really is and he is very comfortable with himself. he has accepted the fact that he smells like tuna casserole.]
Teddy bears don't care if you're "a bad person". Teddy bears don't care if you're "fat" or "skinny" or "bald" or "toxic" or "a pain for others to deal with" or a "burden" or any of those negative labels we assign ourselves. Neither should you! I use my teddy bear to deal with the grief, anger, and depression I feel from a traumatic childhood filled with abuse & csa. It hasn't been a quick process by any means and of course other elements like therapy are involved. But my therapist has always encouraged my relationship with my teddy bear. "What would Oliver say about this?" She'd always ask me. Oliver literally saves my life on a daily basis.
9. They are always there for you
Tumblr media
[a black and white photo of mr Oliver sitting on a porch. his back is against a dying plant pot and there is a fencing rail lining the porch walkway. Sad piano music is playing in the background. Sarah McLachlan can be heard crying in the distance. She is crying because he smells like chicken teriyaki.]
Times of crisis can be scary as hell, especially if you live alone or in an unsafe environment. Having something around that can provide instant comfort, even if temporary, is essential. Teddy bears also make great sleeping pals and night comforts for when the night time anxiety starts to creep in. It's also nice to have a comfort for when nobody else is around to talk to. They might not always substitute any situation, but they can come in handy. You never know how much you need a soft reminder that you are loved.
10. They love you no matter what!
Their love will never end.
I've heard people say I'm "too old" for a teddy bear.
I've seen people judge older folks with teddy bears in public. I've heard remarks like, "bears are for children," and "that's weird for an adult to do." I wish this wasn't the case. Many people find comfort in stuffed animals for many reasons. Post partum depression, grief, death, childhood trauma, anxiety, comfort, or just a passion and a hobby. It is not something visibly seen to an outsider passing by. Please help me change the way people think about this topic.
Thanks for reading 💖
