I've been thinking about this for a long time now. In book 3 we say Ethan lost all of his morals, ditched the hospital ethics and became a very annoying character. While I agree that interfering with Elijah's research and that scene in chapter 8 book 3 is absolutely wrong and shouldn't have been done, I can't agree with the fact that Ethan became 'unethical'. He himself said that when there isn't a path you make your own and that's exactly he's followed. In book 1, with Naveen Banerjee's case, in book 2, he hid the news of hospital shutdown, helped MC to get senator to Edenbrook and what not. And I'm not even going to talk about book 3. I think all of the 'unethical' things he has done in last 2 books had the justification but in third book, pb just went mad and didn't even try to justify anything.
I don't think he became unethical, his whole thing in book 3 was fighting against the 'unethical' billionaires corrupting edenbrook. Reckless might be a better word, probably MCs influence 馃憖

I think what makes Ethan and MC work is Ethan's ability to accommodate them and change for them. In the long run I can see Ethan being more like MC than MC being more like him.
And that kind of makes me sad because even if he is damaged, he is also a nice interesting man. He doesn't deserve being made fun of for his hobbies and preferences.
Ethan himself admits in book two that he was in a funk and burnt out on life before MC was around. Through Tobias, Alan and Harper we know that he knew how to have a good time when younger and we get little glimpses of that through his sense of humour and adventure. He is an experienced and successful man but I think that MC reminded him that its ok to put his needs first sometimes, to allow himself to feel and to let go and have fun.
We also see MC taking on some of his interests and traits both personally and professionally. Even if you don't like him its canon that MC is heavily influenced by Ethan.
To me this is natural growth in a relationship and both of them benefited from it.

I would add, re Tobias, he immediately puts the rivalry aside to help find a cure for MC and Raf. My MC, who鈥檚 romancing Rafael, couldn鈥檛 hate Tobias for that. Maybe he starts out wary of him but he respects him as a doctor.....they become good friends by the end of the book
Thats true, Tobias may be cocky but he's treated MC fairly.

I love how we collectively hate Landry for what he did to MC, but love Tobias and encourage Ethan to forgive him.
Do we love Tobias? I'm pretty indifferent to him tbh.
The thing is that Landry put people's lives at risk and broke the trust of the MC. It propelled the story forward and we all felt the betrayal.
Tobias didn't have a big impact on the story, aside from recruiting Aurora and setting up the Leland plot, you could lift him out of OH and it wouldn't make any difference to the outcome. So, if you aren't romancing Ethan, or dislike him, why would you care if Ethan forgives him either way?
Aside from a couple of writers who have their own interpretation of him and a rush of people confessing that they want MC bang him I don't think there has been any attempt to redeem his character further than the book explored.

It's so sad that everyone now feels like they can't express their opinion withour fear of retaliation in any way :(
I disagree, this whole site is just people screaming their opinions and interpretations at each other.
As long as people are respectful and kind, differing opinions and perspectives are always welcome and should be cultivated.

I have no idea why choices messed up with Open Heart post OH2 ch12. I mean, everything was in their favour, chapter 11-12 were some of the best(est) chapters of choices. They were so beautifully written. Had they realised that, we would've gotten some more great chapters(excluding ch17 obviously). And, no book has touched my heart like OH, I'm obviously not talking about the sex they've been releasing in the name of 'streamy books'(no hate intended).
I don't understand it too.
Raf wasn't front and centre and had little impact on MC's day to day worklife so I think they could have amended his storyline pretty easily without messing with the overarching story they were trying to tell. They even could have had him not return to work for the rest of the book due to recovery so would only have had to include MC visiting/calling/texting with him if they wanted to be super lazy. Having MC and Raf lean on each other due to PTSD could have been an important plot point as well as him making the decision to leave Sora for MC. Instead he all but dissappears if you don't romance him.
They could have added additional LI scenes for Bryce and Jackie. More scenes with them supporting MC as a LI and left the rest of the story as is.
I guess we will never know their reasoning but I'm curious as to what others think? Did they have to rewrite the book?

Does anyone know when the WEH scenes with Ethan are set in the OH books? Feels like OH2 before the Senator stuff but Ethan's with MC it seems to hint so I'm confused 馃槶
I haven't read it, can someone help nonny out?
I *think* WEH was released before they were forced to make the changes to OH, which is why it hints that MC and Ethan are together. In the original OH2 MC and Ethan were supposed to have a date night, so with the little context I have, I'm guessing that WEH takes place during that time period.

Remember around ch 13 of OH2 when people suspected Farley and possibly Louise of working with Travis when he wanted to poison the senator? I didn鈥檛 like that at first because it seemed to outlandish for the kind of story open heart wanted to be at the time...but I would have preferred it to the complete lack of consequences that we actually got after the attack 馃槄
I too, in hindsight, wish it was true. Imagine the drama, having to move, potentially with MC's LI, and dealing with the pains of balancing a new relationship, PTSD and residency. And then all of Ethans shit, romancing or not. Would have been fun 馃憖

Oph rant time: makers really forgot the essence of open heart. The simplicity with care and love was what made open heart famous. In fact, it is still one of their top 5 books. Not because it has that jumping into bed element from ch1 but because of the small lingering moments it had till the last chapter. Book 3 is a perfect example of this. It lacked what made Open Heart famous, Deepness of thoughts. In OH3, we ourselves have to convince ourselves that this is okay, or the book has to mention, this is the act of love. In earlier books, we as players could understand without even saying what the character wants to convey. In oh3, they even mentioned everything the characters wanted to convey, yet no one was convinced. I think the makers totally forgot about this thing.
OH3 was a letdown 馃槶

I didn't know we would get the choice to leave Edenbrook until the very last chapter so when I instantly clicked the "I'm transferring to another hospital button" to finally escape from a character I don't like I maaaay have forgotten that my MC and Jackie had finally got together after like three years. I just had MC quit her job and move out of state without telling her girlfriend she was even thinking about doing this until the decision was made. So uh, oops. Sorry Jackie.
Poor Jackie 馃槶. To be dumped in front of the friend group too 馃槵
