VLOG: Hartshorne Woods Park, NJ - Mountain Biking - April 2021
VLOG: Hartshorne Woods Park, NJ – Mountain Biking – April 2021
On to a new video! I managed to set up the camera properly this time, ( I think?!) so let me know what you think. Went for a short ride in Hartshorne Woods. With the Hyner Trail Challenge coming up next weekend I kept it pretty mellow. Bike setup is a Santa Cruz Tall Boy R – Carbon Filmed on a GoPro Hero9 Black – https://amzn.to/2QC3z3z Garmin Instinct Watch – https://amzn.to/3ebsz9O I’m…

2021 Training - Mid April Update
2021 Training – Mid April Update
The warm weather is moving in and my first race of the season is approaching quickly. These past two weeks have been a little more challenging than I would of hoped. I have been struggling with some tendonitis which is manageable but annoying and my anxiety around trying to manage my training load while not feeling like I am missing out or letting myself down by not training hard enough. At this…

VLOG: Allaire State Park, NJ - Mountain Biking - April 2021
VLOG: Allaire State Park, NJ – Mountain Biking – April 2021
On to my third video! A little mountain biking action filmed at Allaire State Park. I shot the video in 4K on a GoPro Hero 9. Unfortunately I had the camera tilted down a little too far but otherwise I think it came together pretty well. I will be sure to correct my camera angle for next time. Mountain Biking is something I haven’t spoken about much on the blog but I think I will probably be…

VLOG: Cheesequake State Park, NJ - Trails April 2021
VLOG: Cheesequake State Park, NJ – Trails April 2021
Well I got my second ever video cobbled together! This was my first real attempt at filming clips with the intention of making it into a semi cohesive video. I filmed everything using an Iphone and gimble while running in a local state park and then spliced it together into the edit you see here. Overall I was happy with how steady the footage was but it is still pretty bouncy in some parts. I…

Operation Hiking YouTube Channel!
Operation Hiking YouTube Channel!
Well I decided to start a YouTube channel where I can share my stories in a new format. I want to put it out there though that I have ZERO experience with video editing so this will be a new and interesting adventure. For my first video creation I used a few clips I took with my Iphone from my last Harriman hike a couple weeks ago. For future videos I plan to use more purposeful video footage…

2021 Training - March Wrap Up
2021 Training – March Wrap Up
March brought warm weather finally and a lot of rain but it was a nice change of pace from Februarys heavy snow. I was able to hit most of my mileage goals while also improving the quality of my runs and adding more elevation gain. I would of liked to keep my totals about 40 miles a week but my tendons have been pretty unhappy with the beating they are taking. Ultimately, I decided it was more…

Photo Blog: Harriman State Park, NY 3-13-21
Photo Blog: Harriman State Park, NY 3-13-21
I wanted to try something new with this post so let me know what you guys think. Instead of a long winded trip report I am just going to share some photos from a recent hike in Harriman State Park. It was a beautiful day and all of the recent snow melt created a lot of beautiful waterways that I have never seen in the park before. If you have any questions about the particular trails or locations…

2021 Training - Mid March Update
2021 Training – Mid March Update
March is already half way over and the warm weather is starting to slowly appear. We had a week of nice weather which melted the 8+ inch snowpack in the course of a few days. Running in the mud was a welcome change of pace after weeks of only running on snow. The Hyner Trail challenge is only a little more than a month away so I am trying to focus on staying healthy and injury free for that. I…

2021 Training - February Wrap Up
2021 Training – February Wrap Up
Well February was primarily a tale of heavy snow that lingered for the entire month making trail running a challenge. Overall the miles felt slow and challenging but I have still been able to keep increasing my weekly mileage which was a major goal for this year. Outside of the bad weather there wasn’t much else interesting that happened. Second Half February 2021 Highlights: Week 3 – 28.53…

2021 Training - Mid February Update
2021 Training – Mid February Update
Well we made it half way into February, that was quick! It flew by if I am honest and the name of the game has been snow, snow, snow. There has been more snow this year than I can remember having in a LONG time. It has made getting in my miles challenging but I am happy I managed to keep up with my plan. Overall I have felt pretty good despite the weather but nursing a tweaked ankle has been a…

2021 Training - January Wrap Up
2021 Training – January Wrap Up
Can’t believe January came and went already. Here is my January wrap up. Overall I have been managing to keep my mileage up and have also made some progress on planning out the remainder of the year. The weather has been really mild up until recently when winter decided to show up. The snow, wind and cold has been a challenge but I am not letting it get in the way! Second Half 2021…

2021 Training - Mid January Update
2021 Training – Mid January Update
Well half way into January already and I figured I would recap how things are shaping up so far. I feel like taking the time to write out how my training has been going is a good way to keep myself accountable. I am also always open to thoughts and ideas from others so feel free to shoot me an e-mail or chime in in the comments section. First Half 2021 Highlights: Week 1 – 25.22 Miles/ 728ft…

2021 Training and Racing Goals
2021 Training and Racing Goals
In the past this blog has been only been used to share trip reports and not much else. For reasons I am not sure I could express I avoided putting almost anything personal on here but like I mentioned in my 2020 recap post, I am looking to change that this year. I want to invite people along with me in a way I never have before and open up in a way I always avoided. Feeling vulnerable sucks,…

Looking back on 2020...
Looking back on 2020…
Well, 2020 was a tough year but one positive thing that came out of it was that I moved to a full work from home schedule indefinitely. What this means for me is that I no longer spend 3+ hours of each day commuting, which is a massive time savings. With all the free time I was able to commit to a much more organized and consistent exercise schedule. Now I have issues with how Strava tracks the…

Welcome to Operation Hiking!
Welcome to Operation Hiking!
New year, new blog! (not really, but rebranded is new enough right) Over the past couple of years my attention to this blog has been sporadic at best as other aspects of life took my focus. I would think to myself often that I should write more but the motivation just wasn’t there. I think I lost sight of why I was doing this in the first place, and it made me question even continuing at all but…
