Happy April Fish everybody!
No tape or glue was used in this tomfoolery, just paper, a pen, and a confused, sleepy cat.
[image ID a tabby cat cuddled against a blanket, wearing a cutout fish on her head. The fish has an outline that looks like a mishmash of different fish species. Inside the outline is written "April Fish!" in all capital letters. end ID]

PSA: Tumblr/Wordpress is preparing to start selling our user data to Midjourney and OpenAI.
you have to MANUALLY opt out of it as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
to opt out on desktop, click your blog ➡️ blog settings ➡️ scroll til you see visibility options and it’ll be the last option to toggle.
to opt out on mobile, click your blog ➡️ scroll then click visibility ➡️ toggle opt out option.
if you’ve already opted out of showing up in google searches, it’s preselected for you. if you don’t have the option available, update your app or close your browser/refresh a few times. important to note you also have to opt out for each blog you own separately, so if you’d like to prevent AI scraping your blog i’d really recommend taking the time to opt out. The pictures should have ALT text in them. If not, I have no idea what tumblr's doing.
In any case, this has been a long time coming but I'm glad to have knit the second version of the Gravi-ball. Pronounciation is up to you. For people scratching their heads, this is the spherical variant of one of the most derived posthumans from the sci fi book All Tomorrows written by C. M. Kosemen.
Very briefly I should address that I thought of writing up a pattern, but ultimately scrapped it in favour of sending you to tutorials that you can use as a departure point.
The method I used to work on the gravital's shell is very similar to Staci Perry's "Orb-it Ball" pattern [link], but I had to increase the number of stitches to get the desired size as I was working with thinner tools and yarn.
The gravitals are stuffed with seething contempt for organic life in the book, but that's not physical material. The closest thing to that in this case is some blanket yarn that falls apart very easily. Scraps were used generously.
To make the red eye, I crocheted a chain, joined, and then worked a round. The tails were fastened the top of the sphere.
The characteristic seams were a series of chains, with slip stitches into the shell to fasten. This rough embroidery method was by far the most frustrating part of the process for me, so I saved it for last.
Overall, I'm happy with how this turned out! If you feel like making one (or a whole army) for yourself, I greatly encourage it!

Crocheted fabric in a picture frame, holding some jewelry I can't wear due to never being pierced and not really feeling inclined to get pierced. (Long story short, people give me things I can't really use.)
This was a gift for one of my cousins for Christmas, she told me she loved it.

This stashbusting WIP is working up nicely, I've been happy with the progress I've made considering it's difficult for me to see anything through. It's easier when there's a practical reason, like needing more space in my home. So this is partly a method of cleanup that's a lot more fun and unobtrusive than, say, vacuuming.
Since the squares are joined as they're worked along, there came a point when this stashbuster was too unwieldly to carry in my bag and attend to whenever I had to wait for a long time away from home. I'm considering making more panels of mitered squares joined together to be sewn to the main pieces afterwards as a solution. The joy of taking my hobby with me outweighs my personal distaste for manually sewing numerous parts all together.
In an odd way, it's reassuring how I've had the opportunity to keep working with yarn. It's one of the few things that I can reliably do when I'm too tired for other creative outlets. And it's also the least scary math I've ever had to do.
Which brings me to some things I'd like to try out this year. I'd like to make a sweater from the yoke downwards, learn brioche knitting more effectively, make a pair of mittens, and a few other things to be kept under wraps for now.

Really quick digital drawing of a lemon pig, per the tradition.
This New Year is off to a rough start that I can't really justify calling it a happy occasion. May we persist and don't lose our compassion.

These cup shaped fungi caught my eye while I was ripping out the sneaky roots of the bindweed.
I'm not sure what species they are, let me know if you do! Mushroom ID can be pretty tricky, and it's far from being my expertise.

Recently learned Wigglypaint has alternate palettes and a transparency feature. With this I doodled a Tool Breeder feeling annoyed about... something. Maybe their coworkers forgot to feed the squid TV monitor, again.

A sniffling mantelope drawn from memory using Wigglypaint.
I can't help but love working with it. It feels fun! Making art hasn't been this fun for me overall in a while, but I need to be more selective with what I draw since time is a bit tight right now.

So I found wigglypaint and drew something Serina-adjacent because I think it's just a cute look for bumblet-like critters, especially given the cartoony way I draw them.
This hairy birb has discovered fire and doesn't know what to use it for... yet.

My cat sometimes likes to survey yarn WIPs to make sure her humans are still in fact working on them.
I'm using some scraps from big and small projects to make mitered squares joining as I go along.

My family, who largely has no idea what spec evo is, much less Man After Man, will probably find it very confusing.

My kitty really, really loves this knitted gravital toy. I don't let her play with it unattended, as it's full of catnip and she'd tear it apart pretty easily. The yarn body's a blend of acrylic and wool, which I'm sort of okay with as it's not completely synthetic. It's more of a thing to motivate her to play (because she's old and needs some exercise).
At this time I'm working on writing instructions on how to make a spiteful, spherical posthuman menace you can keep in your very own home, or sitting in an office cubicle.

Just a slight bit of redecorating around my workspace for now.
A brachiosaurus model skeleton wearing a crochet sweater that was meant for a human art figure. It's seated on a stack of knitting related books.

A knitted and hamfistedly embroidered spherical gravital. This one has a catnip pouch inside.
Gravitals are an artificial life form from the sci-fi work All Tomorrows.
There's no written pattern for this specifically, if you can knit a ball, you can make your very own gravi-ball.
