but lineless art is very impressive to me and i was just a little curious about your process! and like how much active thought goes into choosing your color palettes. no worries if not (:

OOOGH thank you! Man, I know some program automatically records peoples art, right? My program (normal and functional legit copy of photoshop) doesn't offer that, nor is it something I think to do usually! I do have the live file still though!

So, I messed with a few different ideas for this -- I knew I wanted to portray Maigheach demonstrating his magic, and I knew I wanted kind of a warm pastoral landscape. I messed with compositions and color studies --

And after cleaning up the sketch I liked most, I gave a rough pass at an underpainting, where I lay out the colors I want to use.

I think when it comes to choosing colors, it's a matter of playing around. Keep color temperature and intensity in mind, and rather than trying to tint your whole palette with one color, think about how they all harmonize. I really like analogous palettes (that is, colors that sit next to each other in succession on the color wheel) that all have a similar tint. I absolutely favor warm palettes too. A lot of my art actually uses primary colors in different tints, then I fill things in with secondaries! You can really see that at work in the main color blocking (second image below)

You'll notice in the final piece I fiddle with the colors and details a bit, the foreground poppies needed some more cool tones in them, his shoes blended in too much, etc.

A good buddy has finally coaxed me into 40k so here's my miserable little techpriest. he's specifically an engiseer who worked on a warlord class titan but had most of his crew wiped or incapacitated. we're marooned, we're questioning our faith, we're trying to keep a god engine alive.
