10 Female Gym Struggles from Someone Who's Been There
Yes, I’m lifting weights. Yes, women do that.
Tumblr media
No. I don’t need help with this, but thanks for destroying my confidence.
Tumblr media
Mirrors do this weird thing… they reflect. So that means I can see you staring at me. I’m going back to doing my squats now.
Tumblr media
Hey girl, I really appreciate you putting in work at the gym, but can you please wear a pair of pants that aren’t see-through?
Tumblr media
Guys think that going to a group fitness class makes them a member of a cult.
Tumblr media
Hi. I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m doing floor work here. Could you please not step over me?
Tumblr media
My headphones are in, which typically means that I have music blasting into my ears. I would love to hear your pickup lines, but now is not the best time.
Tumblr media
Hey man, I don’t think your biceps could possibly get any bigger. Can you please get off my machine now?
Tumblr media
Screaming that loudly is disruptive to my Beyoncé playlist. And it’s scary…
Tumblr media
Good thing you got decked out in Lulelemon to walk half a mile on the treadmill.

Scioto Audubon Metro Park
When I think of Columbus, I think of a sprawling urban city, capital of the state of Ohio and home to the greatest university in all of the land. Columbus has a population just over 800,000 people and is known for its different neighborhoods such as the artsy Short North and the vibrant Arena District. As an incoming third-year student at The Ohio State University, I thought I knew Columbus inside and out. However, this summer, I found a hidden gem.
The Scioto Audubon Metro Park is a 120-acre park located just outside downtown Columbus. It features one of the largest outdoor climbing walls in the United States and boarders the Scioto River, making it a green-space haven for wildlife. What makes this climbing wall unique is that it’s free to use – however, climbers do need to bring their own equipment. The park also features boat access to people who want to peruse the Scioto River, a dog park and sand volleyball courts.
Tumblr media
This August, I was asked to participate in the filming of a video shown at the Columbus Welcome event to incoming freshmen. The purpose of the video was to introduce these students to everything that Columbus has to offer. Part of the video shoot took place at the Audubon climbing wall, where Ohio State Rec Sports staff members assisted me, and the other students involved in the filming, with climbing techniques. We eventually made it all the way to the top of the wall, where we were privileged with an amazing view of the Columbus city skyline.
If given the chance, I highly recommend taking a trip out to the Audubon Metro Park. It truly is a hidden gem in the city of Columbus; it is a spacious conservation area home to many different types of birds and wildlife. The rock wall provides you with an intense workout, but also an incredible view if you make it to the top. No matter if you’re #new2osu or #old2osu, the Audubon Climbing Wall is a can’t miss spot and should definitely be a bucket list place to visit during your time at The Ohio State University.

The Top 6 Headlines from Welcome Week
1. Student Wins 13 Day Trip to Europe!
Seriously. Contiki is offering a 13 day trip to 8 different European countries to one lucky winner at Welcome Week. For every event you participate in, you are entered to win the Contiki European Adventure! No you can’t take the vacation during finals week, but what a great way to spend winter break or even next summer!
Tumblr media
2. New King of the Water Emerges in Wake of WipeOut
It’s time to put your money where your mouth is and step up to the WipeOut challenge. You’ve spent enough time sitting on the couch talking smack while watching contestant after contestant face plant into the water, but can you run through this obstacle course and claim bragging rights? Or will you crash and burn? My bet: you’re all talk.
Tumblr media
3. Don’t Give Up the Ship!
Display your captain prowess and take down other canoes in Battleship. Follow that up by maneuvering your vessel through McCorkle’s obstacle course and race against time to establish aquatic dominance at Boats & Boards. Finally, submerge yourself to the deepest, darkest parts of the water and learn the art of “seal” launching.
 4. Capital Cities Steals the Stage!
“These guys rock, man! Who are they?” We don’t know either.
Tumblr media
5. Intramural Champ drafted by Lakers 1st Overall!
Our intramural tournaments are practically the combine for amateur athletes. Show off your arm strength in disc golf, put on a vertical jumping display in sand volleyball and make sure you mix in some 3’s alongside those hard drives to the lane during the 3-on-3 basketball tournament. You never know who could be watching and rumors are Aaron Craft was discovered by Thad Matta at this tournament 4 years ago.
Tumblr media
6. Cancer Surrenders!
Buckeyes to claim victory in the war on cancer! Former OSU athletes like Craig Krenzel and Raymont Harris, cancer survivors and workout fanatics will be teaming up at the Fighting Cancer Fitness Challenge to defeat cancer while getting an awesome workout in. I think it’s safe to chalk this one up as another W for the Scarlet and Gray.

CrossFit Q&A
Rec Sports’s very own MegDogg has taken on the great challenge of joining a CrossFit gym. Here are her thoughts at the end of week one.
Q: What made you want to start CrossFit?
A: I wanted to do CrossFit because I needed more of a structured workout environment, where someone is telling me what to do and pushing me.
Q: What’s your biggest obstacle so far?
A: It’s mentally challenging when you get to the middle of a WOD and your legs feel like they’re going to fall off. I have to be able to push my body to do one more rep. But it’s nice because everyone else is struggling too, so if they can do it, I can do it.
Tumblr media
Q: How has the group setting affected your workouts?
A: Everyone is really supportive and into the workouts. We help critique and motivate each other. Everyone wants to be there.
Q: What’s been your favorite thing about CrossFit so far?
A: Doing things that I never thought I would be able to do, being a small girl. I like knowing how to do a correct deadlift, or a correct front squat, so I can look like I know what I’m doing and not feel stupid. Also, we do really quick, timed WODs, and I get probably the same amount of exercise done in 10 minutes that I would do on my own in 30 minutes.
Q: How does CrossFit compare to the personal workouts you had previously been doing?
A: When I work out on my own, I just lazily go from one thing to the next and take my time. At CrossFit, you’re timed and someone is yelling at you to keep going so there’s really no rest in between. The instructors are there to critique you so you can improve.
Q: What are your ultimate goals in doing CrossFit?
A: I want to be able to improve my push-up form, to be able to dead lift my body weight and do 10 kipping pull-ups.
Best of luck to our brave warrior in her CrossFit endeavors!

Pending approval to be the Eighth Wonder of the World,  Beyoncé’s legs induce jaw-dropping envy.  Maybe it’s an intense workout regimen, maybe its genetics or maybe it’s the killer dance moves.  Whatever she’s doing to get her legs to look like that, sign me up.  Beyoncé is living proof that there is nothing wrong with women having strong and thick legs.  So if you’re struggling to get through leg day as I often do, here is a little motivation.

One Hummus Wrap to Change Your Diet
On a recent trip to Lowell, MA I was taken to a café called Life Alive. Life Alive takes pride in serving organic food that feeds the soul. My friend that lives in Lowell suggested that I try The Seeker, which is a wrap made at Life Alive. She then gave me her adapted version of the wrap so that I could make it at home. I was skeptical because it is something that I wouldn’t typically eat, but I was pleasantly surprised. Now I make it at home all the time and it is now a staple of my diet. Here is my friend’s wrap adapted from The Seeker served at Life Alive.
What you will need:
Tumblr media
Lemon hummus Spinach wraps Apples (use your favorite) Baby spinach Shredded carrots Peanuts (or cashews) Greek dressing
Step 1: Spread a generous portion of hummus onto the middle of the wrap
Tumblr media
Step 2: Add a layer of baby spinach and apple slices
Tumblr media
Step 3: Pile on shredded carrots and peanuts
Tumblr media
Step 4: Add another layer of baby spinach and drizzle on a little greek dressing
Tumblr media
Step 5: Stuff your face (fold the sides of the wrap in toward the center and then roll from the bottom up)
Tumblr media
Enjoy!

A New Era in College Football
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest: you didn’t follow the offseason recruiting period and you didn’t update ESPN every five minutes on signing day.  You probably also didn’t know that there was a battle for QB 2 this spring since the incumbent starter has won back-to-back Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year awards. But, who cares, right? I mean, you bought your student tickets and got your group ready to cheer this season in The Shoe, so you’re set, aren’t you?
Wrong.
Regardless of the importance you place on football, everyone wants to be able to talk about the Buckeyes this fall. Major changes are occurring this year and to help keep you in the loop and prevent you from embarrassing situations, we’ll breakdown the system for you. Here’s the skinny:
The BCS system that college football implemented in the 1998 season now ceases to exist. While fans loved to hate the old system due to its controversial and sometimes biased rankings, the landscape of football has shifted with a new system that will mark the first playoff in major college football history. The change, happening about a decade too late, is attributed to teams being bailed out by a system that favors historically great programs, and the fans being continuously upset with rankings that cause controversy.
The stage has been set up to allow a more competitive postseason and to determine an undisputed national champion. The details are simple:
The first playoff rankings will be issued after the ninth week of the season on Tuesday, October 28.
They will release rankings every Tuesday from there on out.
There will be a four team playoff, two semifinals and then the championship.
The championship game will be on a Monday night every year.
No team qualifies automatically.
You might not care that much about football, but you’ll definitely impress others with your new knowledge. After all, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll need this when the Buckeyes make the playoffs.

Running: The Love-Hate Relationship
Tumblr media
You know that one person you just love to hate?  Or the one you hate to love? The person that’s SO annoying on Twitter, but you can’t bring yourself to unfollow them because of the strange entertainment they provide you? Or that awful professor who couldn’t teach you the alphabet if they tried, but they’re just so nice that you can’t help but like them? Yeah. That’s what running is for me. It’s the annoying tweeting professor that I love and hate so much all at once.
Running is terrible. If anyone tells you they enjoy running, they’re lying. No sane person enjoys pounding their throbbing legs into the ground repeatedly while gasping for air.
But somehow, like after a conversation with that sweet, clueless professor, you can’t be upset after finishing a difficult run. I can’t think of a more invigorating feeling than the one you experience after completing a tough workout.
Although running sucks, I’ve never felt better since I’ve made it part of my exercise schedule. It’s the craziest love-hate relationship I have and I wouldn’t change that for anything.

The 5 People You Meet in Every Gym
Fitness fanatics are creatures of habit, and, much like their workouts, the people who use the gym are repetitious and can be categorized. Here’s a breakdown of the not-so-diverse people you’ll meet at the gym.
1. The Meathead Every gym has those people who think they’re the next Schwarzenegger. News Flash: Arnold didn’t work out at Curves. These people are easy to spot by their cut offs that expose every muscle in their torso. If their shaker bottles filled with brightly colored pre-workout drinks don’t make them stand out, then look for the guy screaming after every squat. Good rep, bro.
Tumblr media
2. The Aspiring New Member of Jersey Shore Yeah, you know this guy. The guy with the gelled hair, orange skin from hours in the tanning bed, backwards snapback and looks more ready for the club than the gym. You’ll find him curling in front of the mirror four days a week and obnoxiously talking on the phone about his plans for the night. If you don’t find him, look for the guy wiping sweat off his face while he checks out his abs in the mirror. Smooth.
Tumblr media
#nofilter #fitfam #swollnotyoked
3. Cardio Killers Look, they’re on the elliptical. Look again! Now, they’re on the track. Most likely this person runs 5ks for fun, wears neon clothing and eats kale after their workout. They should be your go-to when looking for a piece of equipment you want to use. Good news: they won’t take up any time on the bench press. Bad news: they’re in better shape than you’ll ever be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. The Fighter: a True Underdog Story So maybe they’re not ever going to get in an actual brawl, but hey, what’s wrong with being prepared? With all the time these people spend punching and kicking bags in the gym, you’d think they were getting ready to fight Floyd Mayweather. Unfortunately, they never got that big break and ended up wearing the same gray hoodie every day while beating up the defenseless punching bag. Make friends with these people; you never know when Meathead (see #1) will lose his mind and you’ll need backup.
5. Future Personal Trainer In case you wanted to know who to avoid, it’s this person. If you see them walking toward you wearing sweatpants and a variation of tight UnderArmour and hoodies, get prepared for a lesson you did not want. While they think they should be training Olympic athletes with all of their “gym expertise,” odds are they learned about fitness off the Internet and have no idea what they’re talking about. “Excuse me, can I give you some advice?” “No. If I want some advice or a spotter, I’ll go ask the guy screaming after each curl because he looks like he knows what he’s doing.”

Summer Spinning® Mix
Summer’s officially here! To celebrate, I created a summer-themed Spinning® mix. It was harder than I thought to find all songs with summer in the title.
The workout encompasses hills and jumps. Pick up the pace on the last song to the chorus and feel the burn in those legs. Make sure to take  time to sing along in the middle with a classic Broadway tune.
1) Summer in the City, The Lovin’ Spoonful 2) Summer of ’69, Bryan Adams 3) School’s Out for Summer, Alice Cooper 4) Summertime, New Kids on the Block 4) All Summer Long, Kid Rock 5) Boys of Summer, Ataris  6) Summer Nights, Grease Soundtrack, Olivia Newton John and John Travolta 7) Cruel Summer, Ace of Base 8) Summer Fling, Don’t Mean a Thing, New Found Glory 9) Summertime, DJ Jazz Jeff & The Fresh Prince 11) Summertime Sadness, Lana Del Ray & Cedric Gervais 12) Summer Girls, LFO
What are your favorite summertime songs?

Fitness App Review: Argus
I like running outside instead of on a treadmill because I get bored easily. I like to change my route everyday, so I needed something that would keep track of how far I was going and would map my route. I decided to try the app Argus. Argus allows me to map my routes, keeps track of my pace and sees how many calories I am burning.
When you have Argus in the background, it automatically tracks your steps and counts calories burned by using sensors.
You create a profile where you can add and follow friends who also have Argus, log your daily activities and keep a photo journal of food eaten. I'm not one to count calories, but Argus uses the information log to observe trends in your habits. Having this information could mean the difference between meeting fitness goals and always chasing after them.
The look of Argus is comparable to the mobile apps Twitter and Facebook.
As a user, you have three different feeds:
activity feed, which displays a summary of everything you have logged each day
news feed, which lets you compete with friends
discover feed, which allows you to view other users routes, meals and fitness goals
Tumblr media
The usability of the app is fantastic, the functionality is accurate and I really enjoy using it.
A few of it's downsides are the drain on your battery life and the photo journal function. Continued use of the GPS in the background can decrease your battery life and to log the food you eat, you have to photograph it. I don't like this feature because I usually log my food after I eat it. Even though this function does not meet my personal needs, it is an effective way to share ideas for healthy meals with your followers.
Overall, I give Argus four out of five stars.

Building Bigger Arms
Not all workouts require hours in the gym, and honestly, who has that much time anyway? For those days when there aren’t enough hours, try this arm workout. The short rest periods keep the intensity high, and build muscle endurance.

Killer Cross Training
In all honesty, I thought group fitness classes were a joke. I never went to them because I thought my own workouts were harder and better than any class could be.
I was horribly wrong.
I recently started attending the Rec Sports group fitness classes to alleviate boredom from my normal routine and there is no turning back.
I attended Cross Training with Meg M. on a whim and was immediately thrown into a tough workout reminiscent of my high school track conditioning days. I’ve been out of track shape for a while, so needless to say, this experience was interesting.
Tumblr media
The class was comprised of two-minute circuits. We did 20 seconds of an exercise and 10 seconds off, followed by a two-minute challenge exercise, like wall-sits. After completing a circuit and challenge, we did suicides. Yes, everyone’s favorite sports punishment: suicide crab walks, bear crawls and traditional sprints. As terrible as repeated suicides sound, they were done in relay teams and the team atmosphere created camaraderie and made finishing the workout much easier.
By the end of the class, I was nearly winded and my legs were Jell-O, but I felt great. I had just completed a workout that would’ve kicked my butt back in high school…not that it didn’t kick my butt this time around, but I now know that I’m capable of a high-intensity cross training workout.
View the Rec Sports fitness schedule to try something new, even if it’s not Cross Training. Challenge yourself. You’ll be surprised with the results!
