As somebody who once paid way too much money for a signed first edition copy of the goldfinch it’s nice to know I’m not the only one haunted by that book
i would KILL to get my hands on a signed copy!!!! that book haunts me and is my soul comfort.
nat I just watched a 5-part tiktok series of a man walking thru a restoration of an Ave Maria icon and was really just like "this is just like Winterlude fr"
Did you ever waiver or doubt yourself when it came to the MCD in ABH? I’m writing an MCD fic right now but I feel SO GUILTY about killing the person now that it’s time 😭 and I’m worried that readers are going to get mad at me even though I tagged it from the start.
hiya!!
honestly, no i never doubted myself when i was actually writing ahb! and even when i published it, i felt very confident in my decision. because to me, the point of the story doesn’t translate if regulus lives. so. i knew what needed to be done.
however, the very first comment i got in response to publishing regulus’ death chapters was “wasted time” implying that this person read my fic and now found it useless now that regulus was dead.
the idea that i had potentially ruined a reading experience for this person and a lot of other people who read ahb! after them and invested time in MY story because i decided to kill regulus was something that caused me a lot of unnecessary panic and upset. and guilt. and i did, briefly, consider taking down the last 5 chapters, scrapping them and trying again.
but i am so thankful that i didn’t. my advice is this: nobody knows your own story better than you. do not let the potential backlash stop you from writing the story you want to see. at the end of the day, your story is for you!! so write it the way you want it, with the deaths and all.
and the people that get it, will get it. trust me, they will!! and the ones that don’t get it can die mad about it x <333
hi! i've been wondering, in AHB, does James ever talk to his parents after the phone call? It's been bothering me, so i thought i'd ask. hope you don't mind!
yes!! i think i mention in the epilogue that he writes to them!! (no return address obvi) but as far as calling on the phone (eventually but years and years later and always by pay phone somewhere far away from where he actually lives) and seeing them in person ,,,,, i mean it might take a decade or two for james to see them in person and it would be VERY risky but i imagine he does it once or twice
one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method
