honestly the worst thing about adhd for me is that a new hobby or hyperfixation is one of the greatest sources of joy, but its always haunted by the knowledge that it won’t last and i don’t get to decide or even know how long. I can’t count on being interested in anything long term.
it feels like theres a clock ticking above my head and i cant see how much longer i get to enjoy something. i can’t start big projects for fear of never finishing them. i have to hold myself back from anything that requires long-term commitments or consistency because i can’t rely on future-me to follow through.*
when i pace myself and try to casually keep up with something after the hyperfixation ends it just isn’t the same, the joy is gone. when i say fuck it and just let myself run, i end up trying to cram years of a hobby into weeks or months. i bite off way more than i can chew, burn out spectacularly, and spend the next month feeling guilty every time i look at the pile of expensive, unused materials that i sat down one day and never picked back up.
Theres a toll that years of it takes on your self-trust, it compromises your ability to make decisions without second guessing the most basic things. “What will I want?” and “what will I like?” aren’t any less opaque at six months from now than six years. I can’t count on what I want. In a way, I can’t count on myself and there’s a grief that comes along with that.
i see so much about dealing with adhd shame, but i dont think i’ve heard more than one person express the grief that comes with losing something you really love, not because it leaves you, but because your body simply decides without your permission to stop loving it.

I’m jealous of those who can function like a normal human being. They don’t have anxiety holding them back from everything, they don’t struggle to get out of bed or have to put on an act that everything is fine when its not. They don’t struggle to hold friendships and relationships… they don’t feel sad for no fucking reason everyday. Those that can hold jobs and work towards their dreams, the ones who have self esteem and see the beauty in themselves. Those that know what its like to feel safe and secure, not insecure and fearful of it all.

To any suicidal followers I may have: This is a sign to not kill yourself. You are loved and the world is special because you are in it. Keep holding on.

Ride or die on Netflix is a Japanese lesbian movie which is a rare breed and it comes with its own set of problems. It is clearly made from the male perspective, the male gaze is strong especially during scenes of sexual violence and exploitation. It is a film that shows violence against women very blatantly. It shows needless violence and sexual violence against women in a gratuitous way and it seems to aim more to exploit it for an audience that enjoys it rather than to criticize it.
It also includes stereotypes hurtful to the wlw community that go unchallenged by the film. An obvious example is that of the lesbian protagonist saying that she lost her virginity because she had sex with the man she killed. This is a 29 year old woman that has been having sex with women. The regressive idea that she was a virgin because she hadn't had sex with a man is just an example of how these ideas (that still exist in all cultures) go unchallenged in Japanese cinema. Regressive ideas about sex are recurring and even ruin the women's sex scene with talk about one of them wishing she was a man so she could put something in the other because her fingers aren't enough and other such silliness that older American pieces of entertainment used to regularly engage in as well. These are ideas prevalent in Japanese queer cinema because it is so rare to have gay movies little progress has been made and these ideas have not been criticized.
We see one trope after the other, depicting the existence of lgbt people as a tragic one.
The film has very few good moments, somewhere in there exists a love story between two tortured women trying to escape the chains of the homophobic, patriarchal society they live in. It's too bad the film itself endorces many aspects of their oppression.
Conclusion: 🤮

Obviously there are many things to dislike about adulthood but as someone who grew up in an abusive household for whom adulthood offered the only chance at an escape, it's incredibly important to me that i romanticize adulthood whenever possible because i know there are kids and teenagers like me out there who are seeing nothing but complaints about rent and taxes and the loneliness of living on your own and i know they're going to internalize all of that and assume it means that adulthood won't offer them the freedom and safety they've been dreaming of. So while i never want to minimize the difficulties of being an adult, i also want to highlight how incredibly nice it can be to finally have ownership of your life and your body and your time and money and food and everything else in a way that you never had before. You can choose when you wake up! You can choose what you have for breakfast! You can choose when to go to sleep or if you want to (inadvisably) stay up all night watching tv in the living room! In the living room! You can choose what to watch! These are little things, but they are worth taking pleasure in, and they are worth looking forward to.
