sorry to keep talking about homestuck music but like

do y'all know about that 'Longest Joke in the World' thing? it's like a 50k word story about a guy who gets lost in a desert and it goes on and on, it's so long but it's interesting, and when you get to the end it ends on a punchline that's legitimately funny but part of what makes it so funny is the fact that you had to get through this entire lengthy story to get there. like, you can find a short summary and it won't make it sound funny; forcing yourself through the long narrative gives you certain context to make the thing funny?

anyway, Homestuck is like the emotional reverse of that. all of Homestuck is a lengthy narrative giving you the context to make you ugly cry like a baby at Do You Remem8er Me. Remem8er is the emotional climax of the story and everything else is just wind down. it will be decades later and I will never be over Remem8er

#anyway guess what album i got to #its both a cheap shot at my emotions and SUCH an incredibly expensive shot. at my emotions #its the ultimate 'sit a nonHomestuck down and try to explain why this objectively pretty song is so emotionally devastating and bittersweet #i could tell you about how many dead children we have to leave behind over the course of this ridiculously long webcomic #but that wont tell you how it felt to see their ghosts wake up #the ones who objectively sucked too thats really what gets me every single time. damn

oops i started listening to Savior of the Dreaming Dead just to remember and I literally could give an hour long presentation on just this one track actually. breaking down the instrument choice and the leitmotifs referenced and the emotional 'story' built by placing the various elements in the order given? in fact an hour probably wouldn't even be enough time. maybe that podcast I want to make should just be me breaking down various Homestuck music tracks

#see this is what im talking about - i have so little music theory knowledge but id KILL to have the time and money to study this #not for any financial gain literally just because i want to be able to talk about music and appreciate music better

aborted start to make a playlist of all the best official Homestuck tracks before realizing a) half the songs I'd include just for plot/flash reasons, and b) if I want to just show off the compositions to friends who haven't read the beast i'd have to either include explanations or disinclude those tracks entirely, and c) the only friends who'd even bother listening to that playlist would be other Homestuck fans who'd say 'oh yeah i do love all these songs, why didn't you include these other ones on the list though' and then the list would just be. every official Homestuck track.

i'm obsessed with how casually Laios just drops the chekov's gun of a question, asking if a dungeon needed to eat to survive what would it eat

#yeah man! what WOULD it eat! you and your new friends have only been wandering around lost for weeks - plenty of time to ponder that! #its so wonderful how this story starts on such a small specific concept free of context - gotta save our friend who got ate! - #and builds the context and the follows the logic line by line #until you get the heroes squaring off against the very 'personified' concept of hunger and desire itself #(who you've been seeing watching the heroes from the scenery from the very beginning even!) #makes me go feral. i want to eat the book itself #delicious dungeon

#178 which is actually way less than I thought it would be?? #ive been here for over a decade #and i think a lot of blogs i used to follow deactivated and arent in my follow list anymore maybe? #but ive always been fairly conservative about following #i very specifically dont follow accounts that post more than X times a day (x varies based on how active tumblr is that year) #and have actually unfollowed beloved mutuals for posting too much sadly. i still consider us mutuals #and actually regularly stalk the accounts of people who interact with my blog regularly so i consider ALL of us mutuals #i also have a good habit of unfollowing blogs when they start posting a lot of stuff that frustrates me #i dont mind stuff i dont know anything about or fandoms im not in or whatever on my dashboard #but like. i specifically remember unfollowing some Homestuck peeps after homestuck ended because either they hated the ending #or they were really obsessed with the epilogues and i just couldnt do it lol #unfollowed people for perpetuating fandom drama #i was also in a big friendgroup about a decade ago and unfollowed everyone involved when that soured #so yeah i think theres.... 20ish blogs i expect to see on a daily basis? on my dash? #maybe 40 on a weekly basis? i dont actually keep count im guessing #but i scroll to the 'bottom' of my dash each day and i rarely follow new people

most of the talk on this website about Game Changer is how Sam Reich psychologically tortures his contestants, but I want to make it clear to the uninitiated that he's actually extremely ethical about it

He sends out a company wide email and asks them to choose episodes based on a chili pepper rating system

they're also big on consent ie cast and crew have to be okay with it before they'll do nudity or something like that in an episode

#when sam posted that text chat screengrab asking brennan to sub for grant getting covid #there were tags on that post to the tune of 'its so funny brennan is so nice and cheery here and then so devastated in the episode itself #and i thought....... yeah. yes. because Brennan Tortured By The Episode Conceit is like. the role he's playing. in this acting gig #yes its improv yes its unscripted but that doesnt mean everyone involved doesnt know they have a job to do #its part of why team 2 was so nice to that nosey PA in the bingo episode. they might have actually been annoyed with her #but they're on camera and the job they're doing isnt 'get snippy at the crew member they dont know well' (thats grants job) #but brennan specifically... he's an improv comedian. and it's not funny if he's delightedly on board with whatever the trick is #so he goes into the job knowing there will probably be some trick and he's getting paid and if he hates it theres a safe word apparently lo #and then he toes the line of playing his Dropout Cinematic Universe character without looking like a ham #and we all love him for it #and i mean. peeking behind the curtain doesnt kill the magic for me personally #honestly makes it way more enjoyable and funny to see the cast be miserable #when i know they arent ACTUALLY miserable

last song: Elephant Gun by Michael Guy Bowman - for various reasons I was listening to some Homestuck albums this weekend, and this is just the last track I listened to before i paused so I'm glad it was a good one. It's been years since I went through the official music and it's funny how much of the older stuff I dont recognize anymore, and then when there was one I did recognize or loved it was almost invariably a Powell, Bowman, or Fox track.

favorite color: all the greens. I think my favorite green right now is kind of a minty blue-green, but that changes from time to time

currently watching: i just finished rewatching The Good Place, there's a new episode of Shogun today, a new episode of Dimension 20 tomorrow, and Delicious in Dungeon on thursday

sweet/savory/spicy: yes to all three. I've been eating a bit too much chocolate lately so I might need to cut back on sweet, and as much as I enjoy spicy sometimes it feels a bit like work, if you know what I mean?

relationship status: regularly sleep in bed with a cat who gets annoyed at me if i stay up too late

current obsession: I'm kinda bouncing between them right now. I'm trying not to revive the Homestuck one because I refuse to touch anything post-canon. I'm always kind of thinking about the Count of Monte Cristo.

#re spirited away i looked it up - it was the first Ghibli movie distributed in the US under the Disney banner #previously Princess Mononoke had been picked up by Miramax and did get a cinema release #and Miramax was owned by Disney at the time but they wouldnt have the advertising power of a Disney logo on a poster #Lasseter apparently convinced the company to by rights for Spirited Away and a Disney team produced the dub #so when it released the theaters it had the might of the 2001 Disney Empire behind it. of course it did well #and of course it was a lot of peoples first introduction to japanese animated film (not even just ghibli) #my cousins had it on dvd and i watched it at their house... and i dont remember liking it much lol #beginning of my lifelong preference of manga over anime lmao
