One of the things I've been (pretty slowly) reading through DC Infinite is this old Superboy series that began in 1993 and ran for 100 issues. Currently I'm at #46, iirc. I had read a few issues here and there back when it was being published, and it always seemed fun, but didn't draw me in enough to stick with it. So having read nearly half of the series, I get both why it appealed to me, and why I didn't read it regularly. It has a pretty good supporting cast, mostly un-powered regular people like Tana Moon, Rex and Roxy, Sam Makoa, etc. There's even a recurring truant officer because Superboy is always skipping school to do superhero stuff. I love supporting casts, especially when they're not other superheroes, and that is an almost lost art in current comics. It adds variety to the things that happen in the story, provides more viewpoints, and makes the story feel like it's happening in a larger world. Although the artists change fairly frequently, most of them are good visual storytellers, which is a type of consistency, and at least it's clear to read. Sometimes Sal Buscema draws an issue or two, and seeing his work in a DC book is wild if you've read a lot of Bronze Age comics. I guess I didn't stick with the series because there are a lot of "pretty good" issues, and not all of the art (though good) was my thing, especially back in the 90s. I still plan to finish the run. I think this is the series that introduced Hypertime, so it gets more cosmic-y at some point. Oh, also, nobody is calling him Kon-el or Connor up to these mid-40s issues. They just call him Superboy, or SB, or Kid. I guess he didn't get a proper name until later?

That's a good way of expressing it. I just don't see the point of ai art for someone who loves art. Knowing that someone made the thing is an enormous part of what makes art interesting. Why did an ancient person make this cave painting? Why did fancy people in France dress like that? Howcome this modern artist glued rusty bolts and barbed wire to their canvas? How did this pulp author manage to write such entertaining stories under such insane production pressures? Any kind of art can connect you to people you've never met because a person made it. With ai, there is no answer to any of those questions. It's just a thing. It has less meaning than a stick you find on the ground. At least that stick has a story about growing from a seed, sprouting from a tree, falling off the tree. That thing made by ai is just there because a computer program imitated something people do, but without any thought or feeling or intention. What is the point?
"This fic was ai generated—" Cool, so lemme block you real quick

the problem with reading and writing leading to a strong vocabulary is that you tend to know the vibe of words instead of their meanings.
if I used this word in a sentence, would it make sense? absolutely. if you asked me what it meant, could I tell you? absolutely not.

Photographers all know about polarizing filters. They remove reflections off the surfaces of objects. We use them to see into water or windows that are obscured by those reflections. But anything with an even slightly glossy surface has a layer of reflection on top. So if you have a shiny green plant, it can remove the shiny and reveal a very saturated green underneath. Polarizers also remove a lot of scattered and reflected light from the sky. Which reveals a deep blue color you didn't even know was there.
Here is a photo I took of my circular polarizer.

And the first thing I noticed when walking outside during the eclipse was the color of everything was more saturated, just like in that circle. Apparently, an eclipse significantly reduces polarized light and I got this creepy feeling because I was only ever used to seeing the world like that through the viewfinder of my camera.
The other thing I noticed was my outdoor lights. I leave them on all the time because I never remember to turn them on at night. And usually the sun will render them barely visible during the day. On a very sunny day they almost look like they are off.
Tumblr media
But you can clearly see they are shining and even flaring the camera during the eclipse.
Our eyes adjust to lighting changes very well so it was hard to tell how much dimmer things were, but that is a good indication. I took this photo a few minutes ago and you can see how dim the lights appear after the moon has fucked off.

I did a calculation using the exposure settings between these two photos. The non-eclipse photo has 128 times more light or about 7 stops difference.
A partial Pringle eclipse cut the sun's light by 6400%.
