This. Every single word. Don’t let history glamorize a horrific period of time.
So someone pointed out to me recently that in a few years, maybe a few decades, the history of the us during covid is probably going to get twisted. The fact that we all had to make and wear cloth masks is going to be hailed as a symbol of how we “"came together as a nation”“” or whatever the fuck propaganda spin they try to put on it.
So I just want to say, for the record, the time of the corona virus pandemic was not a time when america came together.
This was a time when people hoarded toilet paper and sanitizing supplies either for themselves or to sell at absurd prices to the desperate people who didn’t get to the store soon enough during the shortages
This was a time when scared parents were sending their kids to finish school in the spring in plastic trash bags because they couldn’t think of any other way to possibly keep their families safe
This was a time when grocery store and retail and service workers were forced to keep working whether they wanted to risk their health or not because they couldn’t make rent otherwise and the people with enough privilege to have remote jobs tried to repay them with applause instead of fair wages
This was a time when nurses had the hold the hands of multiple dying people every day as their families watched their loved ones die over a video call because the hospital couldn’t risk having visitors
This was a time when city governments had to handle so many eviction hearings that they rented out convention centers and called in the national guard instead of doing a rent freeze to stop predatory landlords
This was a time when racism and police brutality were so unbearably horrible that people protested in the streets for months even though there was a god damn pandemic that our federal government wasn’t doing shit to stop and the cops were so mad that they were being asked to stop beating up black people that they were beating up everyone
This was a time when schools being forced to reopen in the fall or lose their federal funding had to draft templates for letters if a teacher or a staff person or a fucking child died from exposure to corona at school
This was a time when the president of the United states demanded that the cdc stop releasing data about all the people who were dying because of the warnings he ignored for months were making him look bad
This was a time when some state governments didn’t mandate masks and forced businesses to reopen because they didn’t want to pay unemployment to people trying to stay safe at home anymore
This was a time when Jeff Bezos was on track to be a fucking trillionare because everyone was ordering things on amazon instead of going to the store and the people he worked to death to get it didn’t see a single cent of it
This was a time when instead of providing homeless people with housing, we painted boxes on the ground to show homeless people how far away the had to be on the street to maintain social distancing
We did not come together to make cloth masks. Cloth masks represent nothing less than the absolute and utter failure of a nation’s government to inform and protect its citizens
This was not a time when we came together. This was a time when we survived, and not all of us made it.
This was a time when people casually talked about how many human lives the economy was worth without considering the evil that had just come out of their mouths.
This was a time when thousands of us died for profit and the ego of a cheating narcissists con man who scammed his way into the white house
This was a time that we survived. Most of us tried to do the right thing, stay home, limit trips to the store and socializing, wear a mask. And still, so many of us were lost. Thousands every day.
But that wasn’t a good enough reason for some people, for those among us who were too selfish to recognize the responsibilities we have toward one another as human beings.
This was not a time that we came together
This was a time that we survived
Not all of us made it
And those of us who did survive will never forget the evil we saw daily in our politicians and those around us

It meant everything - Drake x Olivia fanfic
Summary: It doesn’t mean anything. Until it does.
Author’s note: Another Drake x Olivia fanfic. From Olivia’s POV. A lot of time jumps. Pretty much sums up how I see them ending up together.
Tumblr media
“This doesn’t mean anything,” Olivia pulled herself out of Drake’s embrace, just long enough to spit out these words.
“I know.” He pulled her back in, his lips rough and voice hoarse and so demanding, but Olivia was just as eager so she let him take this one,
and they continued right where they left of. Striping each other of their clothes in a secret passage of the palace, where no one could ever interrupt them.
He pulled her back in with a passionate kiss, almost brutal, but it was just what Olivia needed right now.
The hole in her heart bled, but at least she was able to put these thoughts aside while she was entangled in Drake’s arms and limbs and – OH
Who knew that Walker could make her feel that good in the pit of her stomach and make those sounds get out of her mouth?
Amber and Liam had just announced their engagement.
Sure, they both knew it was coming. They were both living in some sort of a fantasy that one day they’ll wake up and realize that their heart laid someplace else. She wanted Liam to love her, and Drake wanted Amber.
But life wasn’t always as easy and fun, and sometimes your heart broke into millions of pieces.
And suddenly you find yourself finding comfort in the arms of the last person you could’ve imagined. And this is how their story began.

Not gonna lie, I’m... kinda upset with the way VIP has been handled. I’m not going to go into how astronomically expensive it is & how few people it’s actually cost-effective for, because lots of other posts have covered those points really well already. But here are some other things that I think bear mentioning:
1. I’m 99% sure that VIP is going to reduce the quantity & quality of content available to non-VIP players going forward
This is just basic business economics – if you put out a brand-new subscription service in the middle of a global recession, probably because your profits have dropped in that recession, of course you’re gonna have to really motivate people to buy into the service. And that means keeping as much content as possible behind the paywall, motivating people to sign up because a) they can’t get a reasonable playing experience without doing so and b) their money is unlocking more content, therefore the subscription service seems like ‘better value.’ Actually, something like this has already happened. PB is in a minor content drought at the moment – only 3 books on the release schedule – but they’ve still put a lot of resources into releasing The Unexpected Heiress, the historical mystery book they know everyone so desperately wants, as a VIP book, so that all its publicity can drum up VIP subscriptions. And yes, they’re still releasing a non-VIP book next week, My Two First Loves – but that book is a) another staple romance and b) a money-making experiment in itself, being a daily release (it’s much harder to accumulate diamonds/keys for chapters without buying them when the chapters are being released closer together, you know?). Long story short, I could just be catastrophising, and I hope I am – I hope PB proves to me that they’re better than this. But I think we’re going to end up in a situation where all the ‘good concept’ books go to VIP first, and the free line-up is just ~3 romance books a week.
2. Having all content go through VIP first wouldn’t be so bad if there was transparency on when the general public release is, but there’s been zilch
There’s only one other IF app I know of that has a VIP program, and it’s Originals. In that app, it’s made very clear that VIP players have one week advance access to new books & chapters, which is an important factor in the decision of whether VIP is right for you. In Choices, the wait for general release will obviously be longer... but we still don’t know how long. I get the feeling that PB will release books only when they think they’ve served their max possible marketing purpose in VIP, which could be a really long time and is... just kinda shady, tbh.
3. While PB claims VIP was designed to ‘reward engaged players’... it’s actually of most benefit to new players.
This is something I maybe have a bit of a chip on my shoulder about, because although I’m very aware of just how problematic Choices can be, I remain a die-hard player. I’ve been playing since 2016, I’ve completed 82 out of 85 fully-released books, I stay up-to-date with new releases and buy diamonds regularly. I would love to have access to a VIP service that acknowledges I’m here to stay and makes it a bit more cost-effective for me. But instead, I’m offered a service where the biggest benefit is unlimited keys – something I’m unlikely to use, because I’ve already played so much of the available content – and where there’s an additional benefit of 2 bonus diamonds per unplayed chapter, which I can’t use because I’ve already played so much of the available content. I’m very conscious of sounding whiny here because I know VIP has to cater for everyone, not just those of us who’ve been here a long time, but... I just wish there were tiers or something to give all types of players interested in VIP some level of benefit, you know?
4. Just generally, this is the worst time to be releasing a VIP subscription service
Like I said before – there’s a global recession. Choices is already low on content, partly through uncontrollable circumstances (COVID-induced delays on productivity) but also partly through their own mistakes (writing an OH Book 2 that was so problematic it had to be recalled & abbreviating series like DS that were obviously set up to have multiple books). In the end, they’re a business that probably has to meet Nexon-set profit quotas to survive, and they’ve spoken out about trying to avoid past experiences of being laid off from companies and I sympathise with that, I really do. But still, this VIP feature feels like a slap in the face to everything they claimed to be about – games that would be empowering & representative for young women & marginalised young people – and I don’t know, guys. I just... don’t feel great about it.

So a not so great update:
I tested positive for COVID.
I thought I got the flu (high fever, cough, chills, tummy issues) and ended up getting tested. Fast forward 3 days and I got my results back - along with utter exhaustion at literally everything and a cough that makes it sound like my lungs will give out at any moment.
I had a full work up done at Mayo (extremely and utterly grateful for them). My lungs are good even though my cough is not, and they said I’m on the mend. Unfortunately the “mend” has no real timeline, meaning it could take anywhere from a week to 3 months for me to feel back to normal. I’m taking everything day by day but let me tell you: THIS SUCKS. Seriously sucks so much. I’m in isolation for at least another week, I get exhausted doing basic tasks (I’m an athlete and this is a terrible feeling), and I’m pretty much glued to my inhaler. I took EVERY SINGLE PRECAUTION. I wore a mask, I washed my hands, stayed home, and social distanced. But I’m immuno-compromised so you know how I got this? From someone who didn’t think it was a big deal to follow the recommendations. The doctor flat out told me the only way I could’ve gotten this was from someone not wearing a mask. So I’m going to say this as politely as I can: WEAR A MOTHERFUCKING MASK, YOU GODDAMN NEANDERTHALS. Stop spreading this shit because you feel inconvenienced.
