Thank you so much! On that note, I think I should actually talk a bit about The Ugly Club comics because I think there was a little confusion about which comic series I was posting to Webtoons. Here is the thing about The Ugly Club. It has spiraled into a HUGE thing for me. Like...a BIG HUGE thing. I wish I could show you all the piles of sketchbooks, notebooks, sketchpads, post-its, loose papers, rough drafts, scripts, files, research books, fashion books, art books, all devoted to the UC comic. It's been my main side-project/obsession for... jeez, like almost 4-ish years now? (can that be possible???) And it still is my main passion project, but I've realized that at this point it's going to take me SO much longer than I originally expected now that I'm this invested and I don't want to rush it out until I'm truly satisfied with the final story. It looks pretty different now, but I think (i hope) people will still like it. But I also realized The Ugly Club can't be my ONLY project or it's going to stymie my growth as an artist/comic creator and my momentum. So that's where the "Pontification Papers" come in. It's my side-project while I work on my side-project. I hope that's okay. Thank you all again for all your kind words of encouragement, I can't wait until the day I can show you folks the ugly boyz again :)

Hi, something I was wondering is have you considered putting your webcomics on WEBTOONs or tapas?

Funny you should ask that. Because guess what I just did?

I just posted my first Webtoons! -> Check it out!

I'm turning my Peter P. Publisher pages into a new comic. It's going to be updated pretty irregularly (ya know... life and full time jobs, etc). But I'm super excited to try this out, it's something I've wanted to do for a long time.

Hope folks like what I have (Some of you who have read the old comics will see some repeating jokes at first, sorry)

Are you thinking of Ever publishing your ugly club comics and other artworks in book form? I would so buy that!!!!

Oops sorry for the late response! Thanks so much, yes I actually do want to do some merch and print stuff in the future. It's just that I'm planning on rebooting the ugly club into a more cohesive series. The script for what I guess you could call "season 1" is just about finished, now I have to actually draw the damn thing. But I'm so glad to hear people are still interested in my uggos, it helps give me the dopamine boost my ADHD brain needs to work on this project <3

I have been informed, in regards to my last post, that for British people, "taking a little nappy-poo" is not an overly-cutesy way of saying you're about to take a nap, but instead conjures an image of a poo-filled baby's diaper. Apologies, as we all know some phrases can get a little muddled across the pond. Out of curiosity, do Brits have another very saccharine way of saying you're about to take a nap?

GAWAIN AND RAGNELL YESSSS! As always, your content is amazing and your literary choices are flawless. One of my absolute favorite Arthurian legends too. I also think it's interesting that it's one of the only variations of that Beauty & the Beast-esque trope where the woman is the ugly one. I think that says something saddening about how, even now (because the trope is as popular now as then), society finds ugliness more forgivable in a man.

Thanks! Yeah, I had a hard time thinking of a lot of instances where the trope is perfectly flipped in literature. There are several instances of ugly or frightening women (Wicked Witch, Grendel's Mother, Medusa, etc) but unlike their male counterparts they are not characters that invite pity but rather presented as irredeemable monsters that needs to be slain. Even in something like Hairspray, which IS a good instance of the trope being flipped it's still not like she's a hideous monster... she's just a plus-sized teenager... the horror. Her biggest flaw is seen as the default for men on most American sitcoms:

Quite the frustrating and damaging double standard. It's like the famous philosopher, Miss Piggy, once said...

Hm. I feel like talking about the character from my last post, Dame Ragnell, today.

The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell is actually one of my favorite Arthurian tales. If you’re unfamiliar with it the basic version is this:

-King Arthur’s out bee-boppin’ around the woods one day when this man comes along and is like “King Arthur you dingus, you gave all my land to Sir Gawain, so I’m gonna kill you unless you can answer this riddle: What do women most desire? You’ve got 1 year to find the answer or I’m gonna chop off your head.” King Arthur’s like “Well shit, I guess have to do this, because of honor or whatever.”

-So he goes back home and tells Sir Gawain and they go around asking everyone what women most desire. And, because women don’t all think the same, they predictably get a bunch of different answers: beauty, youth, money, love, true-crime podcasts, etc, etc.

-The deadline’s coming up and they’re getting worried. Then Arthur finds this *very very very not conventionally attractive lady* named Dame Ragnell who tells Arthur that she’s the sister to the guy that’s gonna behead him and knows the answer to the riddle, but in return he has to get Sir Gawain to promise to marry her.

-Arthur looks at her and says “yeah no, I think I’d rather be beheaded” and goes back, but Sir Gawain finds out and says “no it’s fine I’ll do it” and Arthur’s like “No, really you don’t wanna do this” and Gawain’s like “You’re my king, so I kinda have to. It’s fine, whatever.”

-So Gawain promises to marry her and she tells them the answer to the riddle “what women desire most is sovereignty” (ie. the ability to govern themselves/ to choose for themselves). This ends up being the right answer.

-The big wedding day comes and everyone at the event is horrified at the whole situation. All the guests watch as Dame Ragnell devours the entire wedding feast like No-Face from Spirited Away. *insert cookie-monster sounds here*

-So they tie the knot and up to the bedroom they go to, er, make it really official and she’s like “Look even though we’re married and this is my right, I get you’re not into me, so we can just kiss if you want” and Gawain’s like “No I’m your husband now and I’ll do the deed because of honor or whatever” but he turns around and Ragnell has turned into a total hottie. She tells him by marrying her he has lifted a part of her curse but now he has to choose whether she is to be pretty at night (during hanky-panky time) OR pretty during the day (when everyone will see them together).

-He thinks about the riddle and says “it’s your body, your choice. You decide.” DING-DING-DING! That was the right answer. Now the curse is fully lifted and she’s a hottie 24/7. They proceed to have crazy animal sex all night and most of the next day, to the point that Guinevere and Arthur bust into the room to make sure they’re still alive.

Now I think we can all agree what the take away here is: Sir Gawain cannot seem to avoid getting himself into weird wacky situations that involve beheadings. (See the Green Knight for more details)

…On a completely unrelated note, my country might be about to take away a woman’s right to bodily sovereignty.
