The Twelfth Major Arcana
Tumblr media
Navigating Nayos was odd. The landscape twisted on itself and expanded into branches that disappeared in the fog of the Mists. Where the Kryptis lingered, flesh-like pungent pockets grew. Anyone would mistake the scarlet fountains for days-old blood, but they were the gathering of many minerals, both organic and crystal. Bleached white mountains danced with maroon vegetation; it was a monstrous painting unfolding in front of someone who had only ever lived in Tyria.
Isak wasn't completely unfamiliar with the realm, but it was the first time he'd explored its nooks and crannies without the Astral Ward's supervision. Or without Eparch. He sighed at the thought. He recalled how neurotic Eparch became after he realized Peitha had taken Labris away. And how she…
Labris was gone. Isak knew this. And yet, Isak still couldn't quite read what Eparch was feeling. He knew he was completely inconsolable since the coliseum. What he didn't expect was for him to just take Isak with him. Eparch never took; he always felt entitled. He expected you to answer.
And answer Isak did. Sometimes with great shame, other times with reluctant care. They had an atypical history together. They met when Eparch was still allowed in the tower, a good twenty years ago—Isak had been young, around his early twenties. Some people only knew about Eparch and Isgarren; their raw dislike of each other became an open wound that stung everyone around them. Isgarren was often selfish with his views, and Eparch was too reactive to being criticized. It was an explosive collision.
Isak was not interested in changing Eparch—he was more or less interested in learning what made his mind work. The Kryptis were strange and alien to any Tyrian, and Isak had a special fascination to get to know them better. Being a rift hunter helped with that, but the mindless slaughter of demons made him sick. Killing was always necessary in his line of work; still, he avoided it as much as he could. It was paradoxical, considering who he was associating with.
Eparch had been more ravenous since Labris died. Isak didn't want to be insensitive, but it felt like Eparch's emotions often ruled everything that happened around him. He's a bloodthirsty tyrant, Isak thought. He remembered how he partook in his feasting. He didn't enjoy it. He didn't even like being among corpses and remains. But he liked being around Eparch. And he liked the way he reacted to Isak's touches. And his curiosity. Eparch's pleasure was addicting. And—
He's a horrible person. And I am hopelessly fixated, he thought again. I am no better. He winced.
The rancid smell stuck disgustingly to his clothes. Isak grimaced at the odor emanating from his armor. He was glad to have found an empty lake; it was hard to find deserted places in the current political climate. Water in Nyedra Surrounds was eerily calm, sweet-smelling, and lukewarm.
Pleasant.
Nayos was a strange realm. But beautiful nonetheless.
"It is what it is," he told himself.
Isak submerged his gloved hand into the water and took a deep breath. His eyes finally focused on his surroundings, departing from his deep thoughts. Eos was perched on the nearby tree, almost too agitated. Isak raised his eyebrow and tried to get up.
With a thud, his back slammed into something large. Something that shouldn't be there. His heart sank with a tinge of fear when he noticed a shadow hovering over his body. "What…"
He was cut off by claws around his soft abdomen, squeezing him with an almost too-familiar grip. His body froze and his mind raced. Shit shit shit. This is what I get for being too distracted in a place I barely understand—
Laughter. "You shouldn't let your guard down like that." Piercing golden eyes and a deep unmistakable voice.
Oh, gods. It's… I am ok. He inhaled.
"I… Eparch? What? Why?" He exhaled.
"You were gone," he simply said.
"Well, yes. I still need to do human things. Like eating and washing," he replied with graceful ease. Like they had known each other forever. Sometimes it did feel like that. "Unfortunately," he added with an amused tone.
"Hm." Eparch squeezed Isak again, this time more tenderly. Feeling his body with a contented hum.
Eparch visibly relaxed by being around him. Sometimes Isak wondered if he was a weird weakness in Eparch's life. He didn't seem interested in other Tyrians. Maybe it was a Kryptis thing—to hyperfocus. To be consumed by things.
Isak paused for a second, his face flushed. He didn't know what to say. Or how to approach this conversation. When they were in Zakiros, it was easy. Mostly because Eparch was feasting on other Kryptis or talking about the latest atrocity. Huh, he noticed I was gone. That's…
"Of course, I did. I just said that." Eparch's voice echoed in Isak's mind, almost offended.
"Goodness gracious! I forgot you can read my thoughts." He jolted, turning around to face the voracious monarch. "I just thought you didn't pay attention to that."
"I always do. How could I not?" His voice was calculated, precise, and wholly focused on Isak.
"Eparch…" He shuddered.
"I did for years. And I do every second you're away."
It shouldn't be like this. Eparch was supposed to be a monster—an unfeeling tyrant who only cared about himself. A threat to be destroyed by the Astral Ward. By the wayfinder. By Peitha's revolution. Isgarren should be right, and Isak should be wrong.
It shouldn't be like this.
But Eparch lay gently by his side, looking at him like he was expecting something out of Isak. He didn't know exactly what, and he wasn't sure he would ever know. His eyes were unblinking amber and he smelled of rotten blood, face etched with something so ancient and vile. Like his every crime was written all over his pulsating flesh.
Isak swallowed down his anxiety and pulled Eparch inside the lake with him.
He ran his hand over his gnarly ribs and exposed flesh, pinching the hard edges and caressing the soft areas; decaying bone and sharp thorns turned into chittering sighs. Eparch was enormous near him; there was so much he could just discover about his body with each touch. "You are gigantic… I can reach better if you sit."
"Tyrians…always too small." Eparch huffed and sat. The water ripples were small, shy waves around them.
"Then you haven't seen an Elder Dragon before." Isak climbed over Eparch's legs, doing his best to avoid the protruding spikes.
"They are not Tyrian. Narucnici and Soo-Won didn't originate in your world," he said almost mockingly. "I thought the Astral Ward was supposed to be smart. Smarter than me, even."
"Debatable," Isak laughed.
Despite the way most Kryptis looked, they were not rigid or unpleasant to touch. He petted the inner insides of Eparch's needle legs. Isak could see the remnants of his last meal all over his body; blood and meat dissolved into the water, leaving a trail of a massacre that had turned into an ordinary song after a millennium of cruelty. Eparch instinctively spread his legs to give him better access, and the blonde rift hunter felt the heavy dampness. Not from the lake, but from his evident desire.
Gods, he is so wet.
"I missed you too." His face was burning up.
And he knew he could never forget how warm Eparch's heart beat underneath his palm while he ate the world away.
It is what it is.
Tumblr media
Author notes: This was SO MUCH fun to write. I am enjoying Eparch as a villain because he does seem to *care* about something other than himself. The Labris scene was very eye-opening narrative wise and that's always fun to explore. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did writing it. ( ´ ꒳ ` )b
To anyone confused, [Narucnici] is my Elder Dragon of Space and Time OC.

Sweet-Scented Curiosity between You and Me
Tumblr media
There were no stars in Nayos, Badri knew this. Yet her eyes still looked up idly, searching for points of light that usually adorned the blue cosmic waves of the night sky. It reminded her of wondrous things like the stars in her eyes, but it also reminded her of the crystal bedroom she'd sleep in the tower; floating starry orbs connecting periods that she tried so hard to make sense of. But it was so hazy at times.
"If you don't get any rest, tomorrow will be unpleasant."
Badri jolted in her seat, hands grabbing a fistful of her gown.
"Oh, Peitha! You scared me. You're so… light-footed," she said, face flushed.
"It makes things more exciting, doesn't it? When you can't hear me coming." The kryptis smirked.
Badri's face grew hotter and she giggled almost in reflex. As if remembering something particularly pleasant.
"Now, Wayfinder, you should rest," Peitha said again.
Badri wondered if she should tell Peitha the truth. She hated having to "tough it out". And Peitha was so nice and warm to her. She couldn't resist it.
"I don't like sleeping very much."
"People from your magic tower seem to love it." Peitha raised her brow.
"Yes… Probably." Badri shrugged with a thin smile.
Peitha didn't like the way sorrow smeared across Badri's face; how it cracked the sweet-scented curiosity she wore so irresistibly. It twisted something inside Peitha, made her almost angry to know something could gnaw at a pretty, little star like the Wayfinder.
Peitha also knew there was a war clawing at their doorstep. And she should turn around and let the Wayfinder figure it out.
"What don't you like about it?"
"It's hard to explain." Badri ears perked up. "I spent a lot of time in a deep slumber in the Wizard's Tower. Isgarren said it was the best way to keep me away from Kryptis possession."
Peitha was not expecting something like that. It was hard to stun a demon of her experience; the closest thing she could feel was incredulity. From the outside, she would have guessed the Astral Ward was better at dealing with precious things like Badri. "That seems a little too drastic. For how long did you sleep?"
"Sometimes years upon years. I've been with the Ward for two hundred and something years. I only remember ninety of them. In weird segments," she lamented with a sad pout.
"That's…" Peitha wanted to find the right word. The right bite. The right merciless remark to such careless treatment. She wondered if the Wizards saw Badri as a catastrophic disaster waiting to happen. Or perhaps an artifact to use. She clenched her jaw. "…unkind. You are doing perfectly fine awake."
"Really?" Her eyes shimmered in the way Peitha loved. There it is, she thought. "I think he just cares too much. He never let me do anything by myself."
"He's just old." And a pretentious, paranoid curmudgeon, she sneered. Peitha sat down on the makeshift bed; she gestured to Badri, beckoning her closer, and inviting the smaller woman to sit with her.
Badri followed the command almost as if this was her nature, climbing onto the kryptis' thighs. "But what if I don't wake up again? And you're not there anymore."
Peitha's claws grabbed at the supple flesh of her starry-eyed princess' perfect body. "You're mine now. And a sleeping beauty is no fun."
"Then why are you asking me to sleep?" She bit her lip, eyes twinkling with a mischievous gleam.
"I can't play with you if you're exhausted and cranky—"
"I'm not cranky!"
"Yes, you can be. Tapping your foot because food takes too long. Or huffing because your blanket is slightly crooked—"
"Okay! Fine! Don't say it like that." She whined sweetly, hands covering her eyes.
"I need you at your best." Peitha lowered her head, pressing her lips to Badri's pointed ear. "And I need you ready to feel every inch of me. I'll find you every time, you can't escape me." Her voice turned into a dangerous timbre, dripping like sickly sweet syrup.
Badri shivered with a gentle moan. "Peitha—"
"No. You will rest now." She fondled her soft breasts. Claws caressing her body just light enough to be comforting and not deeply arousing. "And then the fun begins. Sleep now."
"Okay…"
Peitha helped Badri under the hefty covers, blue wool and brown fur; Nayos could get cold and somber, the heavy air and dense fog made certain areas feel like freezing chambers. For a kryptis, it was a matter of regulating their body temperature, but non-demons always had a hard time adjusting. It was probably disconcerting that the ground could feel warm to the touch, but the air was icy enough to freeze.
"I'll miss you," Badri mumbled. She looked almost unreal; hair kissed by golden waves and skin made of lush blueberries, looking up at Peitha like she was her whole world.
So trusting.
The thought of the Wizards taking Badri away from Peitha crossed her mind for a quick moment. And it was enough for an emotion to grow so rapidly violent. So possessive and ardent.
I'll kill them all.
"Sleep tight, my pretty princess."

I'm pretty sure in Tyria they already came up with a "body hair begone forever" magitech tool, so my commander would definitely use it to not have to deal with all of that again. She's living my dream of no body hair because it's a sensory nightmare for me. 😵‍💫
Hyper specific weird poll time!
* humanoid here means norn and humans primarily! Asking about them bc they're most human like of all the races
