Phil’s younger sister, Emily, wrote this beautiful new essay for The Paris Review. She’s shared so many lovely memories of her brother and their family—it’s wonderful to see one officially in print like this ❤️❤️❤️

“Even now, when I watch Phil playing these parts in films that now capture a distant past, in roles that have become familiar to us, I can see so much of who he was. He was a cuddly person, much more so than me. He loved to sit close on a couch, walk arm in arm down the street, and hug big. We grew up like two hamsters making nests out of blankets and books. We burrowed together, especially when things felt scary or loud. We made up stories that took us away from the chaos of our house and into building forts in the woods, rowing boats together on Keuka Lake, or walking to The Brick Oven to eat pizza by ourselves like we were grown-ups.”

“I walked home in the snow, thinking about the mystery I’d created for her with the missing pieces and also how Phil would think I was ridiculous for doing all this. He’d wrap his big arm around me, and we would walk a little quicker as the temperature dropped and the sun set lower in the sky. We would talk, like when we were kids, imagining the story of Encyclopedia Brown trying to solve The Case of the Vanishing Actor, which takes place in a library with a small wooden door.”

"What do I want them to feel when they [see Magnolia]? I don't know what I want them to feel. They're gonna feel what they want to feel. I want them to hopefully understand that this film is a special film that is going to stand the test of time. I just think it's one of those films. I just hope they realize what they've just watched, that nothing has been like it before."
New old interview from a local Dallas station's archive—Phil talking about Magnolia and PTA in 1999!

In 1997, Phil was in an Oscar-nominated short film called Culture that—well, I would say vanished from the internet, but I'm not sure it ever existed online. It's the only official film project of his that I hadn't seen and couldn't find. Until the amazing folks at rarefilmm uploaded it two weeks ago!
Phil has a small role as the coworker and friend of the main character, appearing in two scenes. It's just really nice to see him again. It's easy to get used to someone's quirks and mannerisms, especially when you watch their body of work over and over—seeing him again in new footage reminds me of all those little details, choices, that make Phil so special. Borrowing from my letterboxd review:
His hands—not restless exactly but natural, wrapped around the receiver as his voice cracks and he laughs too loud into the phone (of course), gently touching his forehead, rubbing his stomach. Ugly ties and a furrowed brow and drinking out of comically small plastic cups. The way he talks with his head down, lips heavy, his words thick—then he throws his head back, bucking up, shout across the room loud and clear as hell. “Buddy, what’s going on? So you miss me!”
Feeling so so fortunate to finally get to watch this. Definitely check it out to see our boy again (and spend some time browsing the rest of rarefilmm's incredible collection!) ❤️

Cooper in Atlanta this week!
He was with one of his costars from SNL 1975, I wonder if they’re filming in Georgia right now
Coop’s got the 70s sideburns ready lol
Now what the hell did he do to his wrist

idk about you but I high key love it when Phil speaks other languages for his roles. That Gunther fancam just made me think of when he spoke I'm assuming is Arabic? For a brief moment in the film and I'm just yes 😩💕
Yesss and when he sings in German in The Savages! 🥹🥹 He always said he was no good at accents and I don’t think he was fluent in another language irl but I love those little moments

He looks really cool with the shades on! Did you see the eclipse?
I did! It was only a partial eclipse for me, about 89%, but it was really incredible!

Rochester was in the path of totality for today’s eclipse, thankfully someone at the Eastman Museum had Phil covered 😎 (source)
