Itâs incredibly rude and heâs lucky Semimaru doesnât send him flying onto his butt. But as long as Joseph isnât happy and Semimaru isnât happy theyâre on equal grounds of unhappyâ so it all cancels out?
âAn artistâ shoulda known.â A sage nod to himself as if he really had considered this? And also how could he tell? And alsoâ
âI dunno, you seem like the kinda cut throat to be one.â Itâs a compliment.
âWhăźâ Semimaru is making an awful lot of assumptions about him... Exactly what kind of first impression has he been making? âCutthroat? What do you mean by that?â What does he mean by âshouldâve knownâ?
âI should hope I havenât been that rude thus far...â He feels a bit like heâs grasping at straws. Should he try to find a way to make it up to him? Is it that serious? (he hopes it isn't... he wasn't entirely sure how to deal with it if it was.)Â

â Iâll look at them later, â Octavio managed as he caught his breath. He rolled onto his back, kicking his legs to launch himself back onto his feet. Brushing some dirt off his backside, he jogged over to look at the view from the photographerâs perspective. His eyes narrowed and he tilted his head a bit. The whole place was a bit serene for his tastes. Probably why Joseph was out here in the first place.
â We should find someplace else to shoot from. Maybe with the city in the background. Something industâOH! â Octavio wheeled on Joseph as he had a particular stroke of genius. Or, what heâd call one by his standards. â You think that thingâs strong enough to lift my bike? Hold on! Stay here! â
Backing up a few steps, he held out both hands, waving them to emphasize Joseph stay put. He then rounded on his heel and took off across the park to where heâd left his bike in the parking lot. Driving it across the grassâŚalmost certainly illegal. Caution had long since been discarded, though. Soon enough, an approaching engine was audible from the site of the impromptu photo shoot.
At the very least, Octavio was wearing a helmet.
"A-alright,â Joseph gets out, scorning himself for stuttering, but it wasnât like he meant to, he just wasnât expecting the sudden proximity.
Heâs honestly into the idea, for most of Octavioâs statementăźit had been a bit since heâd seen the city skyline, and he was rather fond of it. But he startles a bit when Octavio suddenly races off god knows where.
Bike? He thinks theyâre cool and the people who ride them more so, if heâs being entirely honest with himself, but Octavioâs excitement makes him a bit worried about what he has in store. Especially since he apparently wasnât allowed to follow. He quickly starts feeling like maybe this anxiety isnât unfounded after all when he hears the rumble of an engine.
Though, the excitement overpowers it. A short 'whatăź' slips out before he stifles it, deciding to get back behind his own 'wheel' behind his camera before Octavio starts whatever show he had in mind instead of question it. Whatever happens will happen, as they say...!

âIt wasnât enough,â an answer Semimaru is used to getting these days. All days. All his life. He occupies himself with scooping hair out of his face and eyes and also his freaking nose! Gross!
He stops, peering at Joseph through a curtain of that hair.
âMineâs culinary. Gonna be a hot ass, expensive chef.â Heâs surprised the otherâs being so social, but he always looks for a chance to preen. âHow bout you? Poli sci or whatever?â
Joseph canât help a small chuckle when he hears that. âOh, really? Thatâs cute.â Genuine as he may be, he doesnât seem aware of how that can absolutely come off rude. âYou certainly look the part at the moment.â
He doesnât quite understand why, but he feels like heâs being insulted at Semimaruâs guess. âAnd, fine arts. Why would you think that?â At least chatting was a fine enough distraction from trying to wring his ponytail out. (and from thinking about the scolding he would get later from a certain someone for getting himself sick.)

âThis is taking longer than âfive minutesâ, you know.â Kiryu finally decides to voice his annoyance after fifteen minutes of keeping this kid balanced on his shoulders.
It isnât exactly tiring to be carrying Desaulniers for this long but Kiryu still believes the young aspiring artist is overstaying his welcome because despite several sounds of his camera clicking, he still hasnât said a word nor made a gesture that he has finally taken the picture heâs been trying to get.
Kiryu knows that he should have just said no because who on earth asks a professor if he could get up on his shoulders to get a better angle of his subject? Then again, this wasnât even Desaulniersâ idea so perhaps he shouldnât really be pointing fingers here. This is thelast time he ever suggests something just for the sake of helping a student out.
âYou done yet?â He asks, unaware of the odd looks passersby have been giving them. Â
If nothing else, Joseph remains perfectly blissfully unaware of the eyes of strangers as well.
He isnât one to be daringăźnot usually. But more than that, he isnât one to turn down an offer, and especially not from a superior. Besides, what was the point of being here if not to take some risks? ...Sometimes, that meant embarrassing himself. He wouldnât think about it too hard.
âAlmostăźjustăźâ He fidgets, lowers his camera, then sighs. âI suppose so. I donât think itâs going to work out after all.â He attempts to readjust himself, find a way down, but immediately finds himself instead almost falling flat on his back. His grip on Kiryuâs shoulder is now maybe a bit too tight.
â...Help me down?â

â it wasnât an insult. just an observation. youâll be surprised to learn i make a lot of those. â he doesnât know why he would invite someone out if he planned on insulting them. that usually comes after he knows them better.
â âŚi havenât been in this city very long. if i went by myself, itâd look weird. and i donât know anyone else, so thatâs where you come in. â itâs all matter-of-fact, but heâs not looking at joseph anymoreâ is he embarrassed? of course not. he just admitted to be completely clueless about the city and friendless, but thatâs per usual for him. â sure. i saw it earlier, so i remember the way. â
Joseph shoots a glare Wujiuâs way behind his back, but leaves it at that. If nothing else, snarky types were interesting.
So he was here purely for convenience? Like an accessory? Very believable. âOh? Hmm. Iâm not new here, but... Iâd be lying if I said I wasnât in a similar boat for the latter.â He raises an eyebrow at him. âThough I donât think thereâs anything weird about going to a cafe by yourself, yâknow. You wonât exactly look any better going with me, either, but I suppose itâs your loss.â
He nudges Wujiu a bit to try and get him to walk in front of him. âAnyway... do you like this kind of thing? That cafe seems to be for more sweet and fluffy type things.â He was getting the feeling he was talking too much again, but he couldnât help being curious... Plus, what was the harm in trying to get to know his new roommate?

Crying out in shockâ for a sick guy he can really move! â Semimaru dives after him, sighing in relief once he reaches the awning.
He shakes out his hair like the mutt that he is, grumbles under his breath.
âAt least we made it. Not thanks to your twinkle toes.â
âListen! I tried the best I could!â Josephâs tone lacks any of the bite itâs probably intended to have. He gathers his shaky breath and gets a better look at the building theyâve come to. ...Yeah, definitely not what he expected. Still...
âHey, whatâs your major? Iâm curious what youâre here for.â He may still be shaking water off his hands, but he doesnât want to let it stop him from trying to make the best of it. (or being at least somewhat sociable. maybe he owes it, at this point.)

âDonât hurt yourself.â All Joseph got in response was a gritty laugh. Octavio hooked his forefingers under his mask and pulled it up over his nose and mouth with a sharp snap. He forewent the goggles, wanting his fans to get more of a glimpse of his face than usual, for professional photos.
â Just shoot as fast as your fingers will go! â he warned. He held up a hand to give a finger-countdown from 3 to 1, then took off at a full sprint towards the springboard heâd dragged over.
As before, the board had a little more sprig than Octavio anticipated, and by the time he was at the top of his ark, heâd flipped completely upside down. Both arms out, he gave the camera the double-devil-horns before he came crashing back down, tumbling in a heap. A laughing heap. That would never get old.
Joseph almost gasps, catches himself before near-diving to his position behind his camera to get there during Octavioâs actual countdown. (hearing his statement, heâs grateful for burst mode...)
...Though this does mean that when Octavio lands, he realizes heâs going to have an awful lot of photos to go through, and perhaps not so much patience from his âclientâ to do so. Oh, well. He attempts to shake off the secondhand adrenaline from watching Octavio (half from not knowing if heâd actually land safely) and catch his attention.
âPerfect. To me, at least. You can decide for yourself how you like them once you get a look at them.â Though... honestly, he wouldnât mind catching shots of a few more stunts, considering how fun they are to watch, but... he also doesnât want to keep Octavio here all day.

he rolls his eyes. what does his appearance matter when itâs nothing important? and why would he say something he didnât mean? he never understood the appeal of lying for the sake of others. he supposed he couldnât be too harsh on joseph, though; he only knows wujiu from the five minutes since he stepped into the room. he hoped he was a quick learner. it would be annoying if he didnât realize that soon.
â either wayâs fine. â he had remained where he was, leaning against the wall beside the door. he didnât exactly need to get readyâ he was already outside, and knew his hoodie would be all he needed. he could forego gloves, opting to just shove his hands in his pockets. â though you donât look like the type of person who needs any help paying for things. â
â thereâs a place that opened up recently. cocoa cafe, or something. if iâm going anyways, might as well bring you along. â
Joseph opts not to act on the childish impulse to smack Wujiuâs shoulder. âI can tell when Iâm being insulted, you know. But Iâll do it, since youâre taking me.â Even if he wasnât entirely sure what Wujiu meant by that... It doesnât sit well with him. Though itâs not something to get hung up on, because it wasnât like it was wrong.
Anyway, âMight as well? And whyâs that? Wouldnât it be easier to go by yourself?â A pause as something clicks, âOhăźIâm sorry, but I donât know where this place is. Youâll have to lead the way.â He doesnât know if Wujiu has a car or anything like that, but he honestly wouldnât mind taking a walk somewhere. Maybe the cool air would help clear his head.

wujiu rolls his eyes. so his dorm mate is this type of person. he could hope that he would be like biâan in that he wouldnât care about wujiuâs behavior, but he had a feeling itâd be a waste of his time to hope that. he gestures vaguely with his hand.
âfine, fine. iâll pay.â thatâs the polite thing to do, and he is still trying to be politeâŚmostly. âbut itâs not that short of notice. fifteen minutes is plenty of time, and you look fine anyways. i mean, more clothes are preferable, but otherwise.â
Joseph blinks, stares at Wujiu for a moment, trying to process what his deal is. He's still shaking the haze off, so for now he decides to just roll with the punches.
â...You mean that?â slips out before he can stop himself. He tries to disregard it to move on as quickly as he can, in the hopes Wujiu would do the same. âIf you think so, then fine, Iâll just get a jacket. Give me a minute.â Running his hands through his hair, heâs in and out of the closet as quickly as promised, though a little pouty that he doesnât have time to make himself look nicer. (and that his first impression on his dorm mate was him completely bare-faced and disoriented.)
He gives a short sigh as he comes to meet Wujiu at the door, leaning on the wall for a moment to tug his boots on better. âYou donât actually have to pay, Iâm not that rude. I just spoke too quickly. In any case, where exactly do you intend to take me?â

âIt makes perfect sense! Youâre not making sense!â He insists, shaking the jacket with his mounting rage and overwhelming embarrassment.
âThen perish,â he says with all the strength of that meme. âLock me out and Iâll break into yours and shit in your bed, dude.â He means it, he truly means it.
Squinting into the cascading rain, he nods. âYeah, there it is.â
Joseph canât restrain a clumsy giggle. âFine, fine, sure. Thatâs perfectly normal. Whateverâll make you stop being gross.â
And if that was the case, then... âAlright!â and he makes a dash for the closest balcony he could locate, yanking his jacket back as soon as they get under cover again. Honestly, heâd like to say he doesnât mind if Semimaruâs left behind in the rain, but that would be a lie. (but heâs sure not doing a great job of showing it.)
Either way, he looks up at the building theyâve come to, and vaguely registers that itâs definitely not the one he expected the other to come to. ...Maybe he shouldnât pass judgement so quickly on first impressions.

âThat sounds like a hassle to do for a stranger.â Then again, Hitoshi remembers his mom always telling him that some people just like to do things for others even if they donât reap any benefits from it. Perhaps this guy is one of those people. But that still doesnât make any sense to the young artist. What good would come out of that other than an inflated ego?
His eyes trail down to the other maleâs bag before looking back at him. He gestures to it with a tilt of his head. âWhat were you taking pictures of earlier?â He opts for a change of topic, not wanting to dwell on the unwanted offer that could end up with him owing a complete stranger a favor for helping him.
Joseph is a bit surprised heâs suspicious of him, but accepts it after a momentâs thought. Hitoshi was right, after all, and he brushes aside the thought to tell him his excuse that he was really just bored, even if it was true.
âI suppose thatâs true, isnât it?â A pause, âAh, as for that... Thereâs not much opportunity while stuck on campus, but Iâm fond of the way the sky looks during storms. Though I do wish I could go out where thereâs more... verdure.â

â In your defense, my face is normally covered. â Octavio hooked a finger under the mask hanging around his neck, tugging on it and making it stretch for emphasis. Really, there was no excuse, if you asked him. But the compliments were nice.
He flicked his phone about his fingers again before sliding back into his pocket. He hopped on his feet, shaking his hands out as the boredom started to creep up on him from standing around.
â Since you know what I can doyou still in? â
Joseph doesnât miss how antsy Octavioâs getting the longer he stalls, even if unintentionally. With a few small waves of his hand, he starts, âYes, yes, of course. Iâll reiterate what I said before - Iâm up for anything if you take the blame for whatever might happen.â
âDonât get yourself hurt, either,â he adds as he gets back into position behind his camera, even if he feels like Octavio really wouldnât care if he did end up injured. âThat being said, ready if you are.â

âAha, is it really that obviousâŚ?â Well, itâs not like he was exactly trying to hide it or anything, but Joseph pointing it out is making him more acutely aware of it. Tiny bit embarrassing. Heâs choosing not to dwell on him apparently being interested in that, either.
Aesopâs perfectly patient as Joseph thinks over what he wants to say, reclining back in his chair again but keeping his attention focused. Itâs true that the story he hears is not quite up to what heâd been hoping for, but he doesnât appear bored or bothered by that in the slightest. Life isnât a horror movie ( most of the time ). They canât all be dramatic hauntings and ominous wailing. The simplicity of it is⌠charming.
âIt may not be exciting, sure, but I wanted to hear your experience. I couldnât be disappointed with that.â That it wasnât some tall theatrical tale makes it feel like Joseph told him something true, not just some fabrication he invented. Is it actually true? He canât possibly know that, but he wants to believe it. âIâve always rather liked this sort of thing. Growing up where I did, it was⌠hard not to believe in ghosts, in spite of my fatherâs insistence they werenât real.â
A warm smile makes its way onto his face from the way Aesop seems to be relaxing. Joseph isnât particularly good at reading people, and heâs very much aware of this, but years of practice have made him accustomed to gauging someoneâs comfort, if nothing else.
âWell... I donât think anything else I have to tell you would be terribly interesting either, on that note.â A short pause, âI was a bit of a lonely kid, so I was never really scared of these things, and they seemed to reciprocate that demeanor. Thus... it was more like being visited by a lost, uninvited guest than anything.â Among other things, but that was the only one that Aesop needed to be aware of.
He finds Aesopâs last sentence to be an awfully layered statement. What kind of environment would nurture that kind of belief? Making it hard not to? It was intriguing, to the point he wonders briefly if it was worded that way intentionally. âAnd where would that be, if I may ask? That you grew up, I mean.â

Joseph is barely coherent, and this doesnât help him process what Wujiu says any better.
â...What...?? We are?â Wait, hold on. Wujiu was the name of his new roommate, so at least this wasnât a creepăźif that wasnât obvious enough from the fact he had the room keyăźbut he didnât remember making plans today. Really, his âplansâ for the day had been to languish here alone...
Actually, thinking about it, maybe it was best that he was apparently being forced out. He knew himself well, and he knew if heâd been allowed to isolate here it wouldâve just made the bad headspace he gets in this time of year even worse.
But, âFifteen minutes? I have to put my face on if Iâm going out! And get dressedăźâ he realizes now heâs still in his lounge wear, which, considering the fact thatâs usually just a huge t-shirt, to him might as well be naked. He pushes this aside. âOkayăźokay. Fine. But youâre paying, since itâs such short notice.â
@photolaps
moving into the dorms wasnât his first idea. he wasnât particularly keen on interacting with people more than necessaryâ building up a reputation again wasnât exactly what he wanted this time around. but that would lend itself to negative connotations as well. he couldnât win either way, so he may as well step out of his comfort zone for once. dorming with someone was especially out of his comfort zone.
stopping in front of the door, he thinks of what heâd planned to say. it would be better to be polite at first, wouldnât it? introducing himself would be his priority, followed by some sort of bonding. inviting someone out was good for that, right? overthinking wouldnât do him any good, regardless. without further doubt, as well as without knocking, he opens the door, spotting his new dorm mate almost instantly. he nods towards him.
â wujiu. weâre going out for hot chocolate in fifteen minutes. â

Semimaru startles at his comment, self conscious and definitely embarrassed. Had he said something weird? He flushes,
âShut the hell up! I was saying for you, for you!â Jeez, thatâs the last time he tries to be nice (????)!
âIâm inside where itâs safe, I donât go playing in the rain like some people I know,â sulkily, he shoots a knowing look down at Joseph instead.
"That still doesnât make any sense?â Heâs still grinning, in a lopsided way that looks almost clumsy. âAnd Iâll shut up when Iâm dead! I wasnât playing in the rain either! If you want to be rude, Iâll lock you out of your building.âÂ
Which, speaking of, âIs this it up here?â He feels sullen thinking about the laundry heâs about to have to do, so he really hopes it is.
