Cook - Haytham Kenway

I’ll write a drabble of our characters cooking food together. [Strawberry Shortcake]

Haytham was seated comfortably in his favorite chair, head tilted back as he stared up at the ceiling. Charles was seated in his lap, looking over a packet of papers while trying to ignore the thick mixture dripping down his neck. “Sir can I-“

“Peace Charles.” 

As fingers rubbed lightly over his thigh the younger man frowned and folded the pages back to the front page. “Haytham. The kitchen.”

“We will clean up after we have tasted the cake.”

Charles growled and wiped a hand over his neck, wiping off strawberry syrup and a bit of whipped cream. Haytham, without missing a beat, grabbed that hand and brought it to his lips. Lee tried to stand up, but the sudden death grip on his belt kept him in place. “Best not let this go to waste.” 

“Master Kenway.” 

As the commotion in the sitting room started to gain volume the kitchen’s lone occupant felt his shoulders tensing as frustration rose. It wasn’t until Charles’ protests started to grow weak and Haytham was chuckling darkly that dishes were dropped and the third housemate marched into the room.

There was a sharp crack and Charles’ head jerked forward, earning a disgruntled growl from Haytham as he released his grip on the younger man. Behind Lee - before he was dropped unceremoniously onto the floor - stood a none-too-happy looking Connor Kenway. “I promised to help you, not slave away in the kitchen while you sat out here doing…” Connor waved the wooden spoon in Charles’ direction as the man picked himself up off the floor. 

Haytham looked completely calm, tenting his fingers as he studied his son. “If I recall correctly Connor you walked into the kitchen, dumped our strawberries and syrup over Charles and then kicked us out of the kitchen.” 

“Why did you hit me boy?!”

Charles was utterly ignored, but both men were pointed at in turn with the spoon that Connor had now discovered could work as a weapon. Lee raised an arm in defense while Haytham held an easy smirk. “Just keep quiet until I have finished or you will not taste any of it.” 

Turning sharply the young man left the two alone again. Charles was still rubbing the back of his head and Haytham motioned him over. In a startling display of defiance Lee moved away, shaking his head. Not taking kindly to the refusal the elder’s tone became one that not many denied. “Come over here Charles.”

As usual Charles rose to the challenge. “No. You had your fun.”

“We were interrupted. I was not finished.”  

“When you allowed your brat to assault me it was done.”

Rising up Haytham was about to continue, but Connor re-entered behind Lee. He could only watch in perplexed wonder as his son lifted the very cake that had started this whole mess was hoisted up and Charles’ attention called for. Turning around at the sound of his name was the mistake. The eldest Kenway almost couldn’t hide his grin at his younger companion’s expense. Without warning the strawberry short cake was dumped over his head, the heavy amounts of cream and syrup rubbed into his hair and over his face. Charles, of course, froze out of shock and would soon dissolve into a fit of rage. Connor seemed to realize this and retreat quickly after his attack, but not without a final word.

“You may both eat now, but you are banned from the kitchen until I am assured you will not burn the house down.”

On any other occasion Haytham might have taken offense to his own son giving them orders. Instead he moved forward and swiped a finger over the motionless man’s cheek, tasting the destroyed dessert while suppressing his amusement. “My my, the boy really has a gift. You may not be partial to sweets Charles, but this is quite good.”

“Enjoy it while it lasts.” Charles and Connor had it out for one another and this little stunt seemed to have tipped the balance on Lee’s temper for the evening. 

A tongue on his neck stopped the plans for homicide, but Charles refused to give his mentor the satisfaction of his full attention. “Charles I plan to enjoy every. Last. Bite.”
