“Don’t you miss the sunshine?”

“Certainly, but I also prefer not being burnt to a crisp. Situational immortality and all.” Yerof said with well known mirth. She turned away from the oncoming daylight retreating into the darkness. “Des, you coming?” Not turning, Desip smiled at the streams of sunlight infront of them. “Nah I think ... I think I want to stay here a bit longer.”

Yerof rolled her eyes and placing padded hands on her hips. “Desip. Joghal won’t like you out here.” Finally, Desip turned to her friend. “Come on Rof. Would Ghal really be mad about five squentals? She hates us anyway.” Yerof folded their arms and raised an eyebrow. “Five squentals? We all know you’ll be out here for longer, even if you burn up like a prentif.”

Desip scoffed playfully and turned back to the soft light of the sun. “You know we could just see what is like to be a prentif. Effy would ask the Frindrift to bring us back.” Yerof creased her eyebrows turning from serious to worried. “You’d suffer a let go just to know what it’s like? Des ... please can we start heading back.”

“A let go could add excitement to the grueling times of education under evil Ghal! Maybe if I do this I might have a chance of skipping it all and finally becoming a warrior!”

“Stop it! Don’t you see? When you suffer a let go you will never return the same! Who’s to know you even come back in one piece?!” Yerof screamed tears streaming down her face. Desip turned to his friend his look of glee turning to lament. “Rof, shit- I’m so sorry. I’m just—“ Yerof cut them off grabbing their shoulder. “Just because your parents ran off doesn’t mean there aren’t others who care about you.”

Desip’s eyes widened and pulled Yerof into a tight hug. “I’m sorry. I just thought if I did that I could go make things right. Maybe even find a way to daywalk like we used to.” Des said as Yerof sniffed her tears away. “Yeah well, I’d rather you figure out the mysteries of the world under Ghal’s supervision.” Yerof said with a laugh.

Desip laughed with her grabbing their hand and heading farther into the darkness.

“I... did this?” Ned exhaled looking over the smoke covered empire. Xori gently placed her hand on her siblings shoulder turning them towards her to embrace Ned. Their eyes stay locked on the smoke, the fire, the ash, the destruction. “Should have known. Even though we all inhabit the same planet we behave as if we are seperated by the stars.” Ned whispered, her face becoming damp with new tears. Clicking her tongue, Xori hugged her sister tighter, resting their head on her shoulder.

“This, ...is all my fault.”
