Three hours to do the iron throne. An hour and a half for the first failed attempt and two hours for the final, successful attempt. Christ almighty, I hate that quest.

Baldur's Gate III "spoilers" under the cut!

Here's where I give you some tips on how to use game mechanics to your advantage so you can survive a very frustrating battle.

I just completed a stupid tough fight really fast because I remembered two things: Create Water causes Invisibility to fail and Sanctuary is not impenetrable to Ice Storm.

If you can, when you know you're going to the Sewers/Undercity, stock up on scrolls 📜 and take party memebers who have a lot of AOE cantrips for the Ancient Lair. Spell Rot isn't triggered by cantrips.

Remember to distribute exploding arrows to anyone in your party who has decent ranged combat. You're not as concerned with strict damage as you are with the ability to hit a group of targets with AOE spells and ranged missiles through the entire area starting in the sewers. You can use grease and other flaming/flammable bottles of goo to your advantage.

You can get through the cistern easily, without needing to solve the puzzle, by tossing a bottle of grease at the mechanism and getting a chacter with a high athletics modifier to open it. You may need to try it a few times, so be prepred to swap out your party just for this bit. (I use No Party Limit so it's not a concern for me since I have everyone with me all the time now. I have also done this section without mods and just went back to camp to get the party memebers to whom I had given the Athletics feat.)

No Party Limit mod plus the mod that lets you give everyone 4 actions and 4 bonus actions makes BG3 an enjoyable romp through an interesting story because your party is essentially unkillable as long as you keep everyone away from explody things and steep drops.

However!

(SPOILERS FOR ACT 3 UNDER THE CUT)

You will also always have the correct party member with you for advancing individual companion questlines and miss out on some dialogue choices and Grub *will absolutely die*. It becomes entirely unavoidable since the Orin questline has only one option at that point.

You do, though, get the opportunity to trigger every possible banter option between companion characters.
