okay so i just finished the first thrawn book right? and like all of it is making me feel insane and i am sure someone has pointed this out already but do you wanna know what makes me feel extra insane?
thrawn send eli away to protect him
like sure he also sends him away to help the chiss and so he could reach his full potential and bla bla but look - thrawn realizes very early that eli is a target as long as he's with him
Tumblr media
and then that is proven over and over again throughout the book until it finally accumulates in this - pryce outright threatening thrawn right after she showed how incredibly ruthless she is
Tumblr media
and then the very next scene is thrawn and eli talking about that very conversation, it's eli first acknowledging how dangerous pryce and the high command are and then confirming - even if he might not be fully aware himself - that he is loyal to thrawn not to the empire
which, let me remind you, comes after yularen just pointed a blaster at thrawn and accused him of treason
and i think that moment of eli pledging his allegiance to thrawn is the first time thrawn realizes both the depth of which he cares for eli and that he will be eli's downfall if he keeps him around
Tumblr media
which then leads to him sending eli away to the chiss and this fucking devastating journal entry:
Tumblr media
like for a moment i was confused bc it happend so fast without a goodbye, plus he offered it to nightswan first and it kinda felt like eli was just an afterthought but no oh fuck no
like nightswan thrawn would have send to help keep the chiss safe, to utilize his abilities to help them fight whatever enemies are lurking in the dark, but eli, oh no, thrawn never planned on sending eli away in the first place, not until he realized it was the only way he could keep him safe
and yeah eli will obv also be beneficial to the chiss, like ofc he will, he's smart as heck, but below all that is the simple fact that thrawn is doing all this empire shit to keep his people safe so even if the empire falls that is still the safest place for eli to be
and I'm just feeling very emo about that

No bc if Eli would have been in Alliances then the present day parallel to this could have been with him but Thrawn already proved to walk a different path from Anakin in the first place bc he willingly gave Eli up but if he was in danger what would he choose?

Ok, I'm all caught up on the Thrawn books now, so I can fully appreciate the depravity of this site.
On a more literary note, for those other Chiss lovers, do you really think they're going to be able to reconcile his book motivations with where it seems like they're taking him in the Ahsoka show?
Or do you think they simply didn't look any further than the original Thrawn trilogy?
Because unless he's aligned somehow with Ezra when we see him next, I don't know how they're going to do it. His loyalty is to the Ascendency, and without Palpatine, there's really no reason for him to be trying to take over anything in Lesser Space.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see, but damn I'm curious!

when i see people talk ab eli in treason it’s mostly complaining about the lack of thranto content. however those people are wrong because eli has a fantastic character arc in treason!! so i am gonna share my thoughts on that, plus how it plays into thrawn's overall arc & characterization in rebels. below the cut <3
at the front of treason, eli is unsure of himself. he is a stranger among the chiss, feels undervalued, misses the validation and comraderie he received working with thrawn. he proceeds to spend treason slaying; in particular, his undercover mission and his deal with vah’nya. by the end of the story, eli has been reassured of his value and competency. he returns to the ascendancy loyal to the cdf, confident in his position and abilities, and most importantly he no longer requires thrawn's approval to feel that confidence. the fact he doesn't board the Chimera to have a final goodbye with thrawn is symbolic of that conclusion to his his character arc! (an L for thranto, a W for eli’s character)
in relation to thrawn's arc...it's sometimes difficult to consolidate the thrawn of the novels with the thrawn of rebels. but leading up to rebels, particularly leading up to the finale of rebels, thrawn has slowly lost almost everything that matters to him. he loses access to his culture when he is exiled. he loses the closest thing he has to a friend in the empire when he sends eli away. he loses eli again via eli's character growth toward independance in treason. he loses faro by recommending her for promotion. he loses ar'alani when she explicitly tells him they will probably never meet again. in the same conversation he learns he may lose the entire ascendancy to civil war. he loses credibility with the emperor, and those last two points are the justification for his position in the empire in the first place.
thrawn by the end of rebels has literally nothing except war. he has nothing except this battle at lothal, because after lothal he is supposed to return to coruscant to meet with the emperor. and he might not survive that meeting.
i think thrawn's total isolation explains his attitude in rebels and particularly in the finale, where he seems to finally lose his cool. what no community does to mfer. thrawn has nothing left to lose and nothing to live for so he enters his bonkers era <3
i think in the meantime eli is probably entering his slay area in the ascendency. eli and the admiralty are gonna be the thin blue line between the ascendancy and civil war fr
and so concludes my thoughts! 💙
