After finishing Part 4 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina... I just can't stop thinking about Ambrose.
[CONTAINS SPOILERS]
His relationship with Sabrina was always my favorite and after that horrible ending my heart is completely broken for him. I think the reason this season highlighted their bond so much was to make that ending hurt even more.
He loved Sabrina.
He was always supportive even when he knew her plans were wrong/dangerous, even when he told her not to do things and she didn't listen.
He dealt with her antics, helped her clean the mess she often made, without asking for anything in return.
Always, but especially this season, he was protective and soft and caring and my heart was soaring at their every interaction.
So to see him barely holding himself together at her funeral, arms wrapped around himself like it's the only thing keeping him from completely falling apart... It was unbearable.
It didn't even really hit me until now, after seeing Sabrina's memories of her birthdays that... That he was there, all the time, watching her grow. It's not that I forgot about it, that information was always in the back of my head, but seeing their dynamic - I never really thought about that until now. He, alongside Zelda and Hilda watched her grow up. He helped raise her. While Aunties acted as substitute for a mother for Sabrina, it's safe to say that sometimes Ambrose took on the mantle of a father. Sometimes an older brother. Sometimes a teacher. He embodied all of those roles Sabrina needed in her life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't stop thinking how guilty he must feel. How much he blames himself for what happened.
He stopped Prudence from killing Blackwood only for Blackwood to become the main reason Sabrina had to die - he brought the Eldrich Terrors, he turned Sabrina into a shadow of herself and brainwashed her into sacrificing herself (I'm not saying Sabrina wouldn't do it otherwise, she is the type of person who would gladly lay her life down for her loved ones. What I'm saying is that without Blackwood's influence she would agree to search for another way first).
The ending made me furious. Wasn't this show first and foremost about family? Weren't the Spellmans supposed to be the main focus really? Yes, Sabrina was the star but there's more to her character than a boyfriend she ends up with. But in typical Riverdale fashion (thanks, Roberto) everything ended up about ships and that's infuriating.
Without mentioning the very fucked up way the "endgame" happened (as much as I love Nabrina) - this was NOT what I wanted to see.
If Sabrina really had to die - fine. I can live with that. Not my first main character death and not my last.
But show me how the life goes on. How her loved ones grieve and come out of that grief.
We got Zelda and Hilda grieving but it was brief and focused more on their shattered faith in Hekate than on their actual grief.
Except for those few heartbreaking shots during the funeral, we didn't see Ambrose's reaction AT ALL, really.
I wanted to see his face in that cave, right after. He stood beside Hilda, holding on to Sabrina's knee but that wasn't enough.
I wanted to see how he and the aunties are doing after all of this. And I'm not talking hours or days after, but months, maybe years.
I know all of that depened on when they found out about cancellation. You can't deny this wasn't written as if Sabrina wasn't supposed to come back next season.
But still, even with a little time and space for changes, they could have done so much better.
Ambrose deserved better.
Sabrina deserved better.
This whole family deserved better.

Sabrina S04E01 Review
This content includes swearing and spoilers for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 4.  Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 04 Episode 01 “Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Eldritch Dark” (2020) Rating: 3/5 I enjoyed this episode and thought it was a good start to the new season although I'll admit the recap didn't do enough to remind me what happened in the past seasons because I'd fully forgotten about some of the relationship dynamics that were happening and some of the past plot points.  Either way when I did settle back into the show I found I enjoyed this episode. In episode one Sabrina finds herself re-adjusting to life on Earth at High School and the Academy but she's feeling unfulfilled and lonely when the first of the Eldritch terrors hits Greendale.  Sabrina and her friends must figure out how to banish this new foe. I find it difficult to talk about episodes without getting into spoilers so here's your spoiler warning for episode 1! [Spoilers!]  There was quite a few things I liked about this episode, first of all I just feel so happy to have these characters back in my life.  The CAOS team write such good characters and I genuinely have so much love for so many of them that I was just filled with so much joy seeing them back on screen and I have to recognise how beautifully diverse the cast and characters are.  CAOS is up there as one of the most diverse shows I've ever watched!  And they're all amazing!   I also really liked the story with both Sabrinas coming together.  I think it could have been so easy for the creators to take the Sabrinas and turn them against each other but I'm glad they didn't do that.  The friendship between the two Sabrinas is so sweet, they clearly need each other so much and I hope this relationship continues to grow throughout the season (and I'm sure it will because we know Brina is going to fuck with the timeline somehow).  I also really liked Sabrina (earth Brina) venturing out there in the relationship department.  It's nice to see her trying new things and not just bouncing between Harvey and Nick all the time.  I specifically really like her new interest in Melvin because I think generally he wouldn't be Sabrina's type but he's so cute and I love that she's giving him a chance!   But, as much as there was parts that I generally liked about this episode there were also specific parts that I really disliked.  Two main reasons this episode came to a 3 star is that (1) I couldn't see what was going on because it was so dark and (2) there was some obvious padding and general weird moments in the plot.  Let's address them in order. 1 - Yes, I know the whole point of this episode is that darkness is taking over but when the episode itself is so dark that I can't actually see what is going on that makes it difficult.  It brought me right back to watching The Long Night (Game of Thrones, 2019) and how bad that was at the time.  I don't think it was quite as bad in Sabrina but it really was too dark that I struggled to see what was going on.  Most of the time it was ok because the characters are few enough and distinct enough to be able to tell who is who and there's no heavy action sequences but it's still just very annoying to see my face reflecting back at me from my ipad. 2 - There was one plot point in particular that I thought was pretty filler but I do know it had it's uses.  The bit where Sabrina "evokes" Bloody Mary and that whole section felt like a waste of time and also pretty weird in tone for the rest of the episode.  I think it would have made more sense if we got to see things like the Fright Club meeting for milkshakes or their relationship afterwards or even if there was more fallout when Rosalind finds out what was going on.  From the direction this was going in I thought we were getting a "girl who cried wolf" type episode but instead it just felt shoved in to have the minimal character development Sabrina needed.  I think this concept would have been fine for an episode on its own but of course you want your first episode back to be a big hitter and the Eldritch darkness is a big big bad so it was a good villain for the first episode but I also do think it would have been too weird to then put this as the second episode after the terror.  Either way, it felt weird shoehorned into this one and I wish it had a bit more development and even an episode entirely dedicated to this one aspect of Sabrina's life.  I also think that the bit with Mary and the new church was a bit weird and, again, should have more time dedicated to it.  Maybe if they had taken out the part with the Fright Club and used that time to develop Mary and her introduction to the church it would have worked a bit better but as it is currently it just felt a bit weird mixed in with everything else. All this being said, I really did enjoy the episode and I'm looking forward to continuing to watch it!

Hades Video Game Review
Saturday 29th November 2020 (date of 1st escape) Hades Video Game Review 1st time escaping Platform: PC with controller Rating: ***** I absolutely love this game!  It's quickly became my all time favourite stand alone game and I can see myself returning to it for a really long time (got to get all those achievements unlocked and 100% everything!) Hades tells the story of Zagreus, the son of Hades, who is trying to escape the Underworld with some help from the Olympians.  It's a rouge-like dungeon crawler where you have to battle through rooms against shades of the Underworld until reaching and the boss and (eventually) moving on to the next level.  You have a wide range of weapons and collectables to chose from and collecting different "boons" from the gods will help you on your way.  You can also permanently upgrade Zag with items you've found on your run and make friends with NPCs by giving them gifts. As I said, I'm writing this review after my 1st successful escape (try 33) so I still have a lot more to discover and I'll do another update in the future. So let's first talk about why I was perfectly set up to like this game.  I didn't discover Hades on my own, I was actually at work talking to a friend about Achilles and Patroclus (because of course I was) when she asked me if I had played it and then said she thought I would like it.  And of course I do!  It has genuinely became one of my favourite games. In terms of platform, I bought it on PC because I thought it would be easier to play with a keyboard and mouse but quickly realised my mistake and plugged in my controller instead!  So I would say that if you've got a controller then get it on PC but if you're worried about it performing on Switch it works perfectly well with a controller (if not better) and runs absolutely fine. (I loved it so much I got it on my Switch as well so I can play whenever I want.). The controls were really easy to pick up with a controller and I have no complaints. The difficulty increase felt natural right the way through with each mid-boss and boss.  I didn't really find myself getting frustrated with the difficulty but I can imagine that people could find themselves getting frustrated, especially with the final boss but remember you just need to pick yourself up, upgrade Zag and try again! I did get to a stage where I wasn't trying to escape but I was just playing through the game to get some of the collectables, tick off achievements and upgrade Zag when I actually did make my 1st escape.  I was using a weapon I hadn't used before and I just happened to get lucky with boons.  I think that's part of the beauty of Hades is that I never expected to escape but everything landed in my favour and it just happened. Even after making my 1st escape the game isn't over.  There's still so much to discover in the story and you get options to add difficulty as you go once you defeat the main boss for the 1st time.  I'm really looking forward to continuing playing the game and attempting escape with my actual preferred weapon!  As I said, I'm also working towards 100% achievements on Steam so I'll do another update in the future, probably when I reach this goal. Thanks so much for reading this short Hades review!  Let me know your own thoughts about Hades in the comments!  Rating: *****

Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline (Book Review)
Monday 30th November 2020 Book Review - Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline First time reading. Rating: ** So I finished Ready Player Two! I'm sad to say that it didn't live up to the expectations I had for it especially after I thoroughly enjoyed reading Armada earlier this year. I did see some negative comments about RP2 before I started reading it so I'm not sure if that just put me in a mindset of negativity or if I would have felt this way even if I hadn't seen negative comments. The first part of this review will be spoiler free and the later part will include spoilers but I'll include a warning where the spoilers start. I also know this is a long one so there's a tldr on the last page if you'd rather read it!
[Spoiler free section but contains spoilers for Ready Player One] Ready Player Two picks up where Ready Player One left off, Wade has won Hallidays contest and inherited the OASIS and the rest of Hallidays property. As part of his inheritance, Wade comes across new technology developed by Halliday but never released to the world that leads Wade and the rest of the High 5 on a new Easter Egg hunt with a brand new villain turning up to make things complicated. My biggest issues were in the first 100 pages with the writing, pacing and characters and then when the plot finally got going my issue was with the main villain and their treatment. I also just find it awkward reading Cline's attempts at women, POC and LGBT+ representation. While I do appreciate the effort and inclusion, it's not done very well and clearly Cline hasn't got the right people around him to point this out. As well as issues with his writing of these types of characters I also have issues with the content. Unnecessary sex references, repeating small points multiple times, over-complication of minor details, treating the reader like an idiot, and more effort put into the nostalgic references rather than progressing the plot. A lot of these also combine into the issues I had early in the book with the pacing, sometimes moments were being unnecessarily drawn out and other times there were moments which I wish had more attention given to them. As the book progressed I found this issue lessened as the plot moved forward but it's still something that was an issue for me again towards the end. Most of the characters I actually didn't have a huge issue with apart from some characters being more side-lined and not getting quite as much time as I would have liked but that would be a minor issue. My bigger issue, especially at the beginning of the book, was with Wade, our main character. He's obnoxious and brags about everything he now has. He has an anger issue which makes him even more unlikeable and he totally violates the privacy of people using the OASIS system! As the plot progresses and he has less opportunities to be like this I found I could tolerate him more but there were still lines that I found myself scoffing at throughout the book. I want to also talk about the villain and why I had issues there as well but because it would contain spoilers I'll talk about what I did like first of all, explain the reasons for my rating and then get into the spoilers. So! Although I've been pretty negative so far there was some parts I actually did like which stopped me from dnf-ing the book. Although RP2 has some pretty bad writing and pacing issues I did actually enjoy the plot. I thought when it eventually got going it was actually pretty fun and I enjoyed a lot of the references even though Cline does treat his readers a bit like we're idiots when he's explaining them. I also still love Samantha/Art3mis and a lot of the other characters in the book so that managed to keep me going. Samantha has always been the more level headed and responsible one but she's still utterly badass and I wouldn't mind her being a role model for young girls reading these books. I was sort of conflicted between 2 and 3 stars for my rating because while in the end I can say I reasonably enjoyed the book I also had so many issues and those first 100 pages really annoyed me. Ultimately I settled on 2 stars because I know that I'm never going to reread this book but I also didn't dislike it enough to only give it 1 star. Now I'm going to get into the spoiler section and talk about my main issues with the villain and some of the spoiler-ey stuff that I actually did like so this is your spoiler warning for this section! [SPOILERS for Ready Player Two] So the villain is Halliday. Not really, technically the villain is a corrupted copy of Halliday's memories housed inside his OASIS avatar Anorak. I think by making this distinction Cline was trying to show a difference between Halliday and Anorak and that they're two different "people" which possibly would have been fine if Cline hadn't also totally dragged on the "real" Halliday in the process. He goes to great lengths to let us know that the real Halliday actually wasn't a good guy at all and was actually a sociopath. I have a few issues with this. The first and more minor issue is that, from what I remember, Halliday is portrayed as a good guy in RP1 and somebody a lot of the characters, especially Wade, admire. I didn't reread or rewatch RP1 before reading RP2 (especially as the movie is so different) so maybe I'm misremembering but it just felt like such a shock. I am well aware that Halliday wasn't perfect, especially when it comes to Kira and Og but that doesn't mean he needs to be villainised! I think the first book/movie perfectly showed how flawed he was without making him a villain and it's just so upsetting to me that Cline went in this direction for RP2. I also have an issue with Halliday as the villain because I think it could be so damaging for people who looked at Halliday and saw this socially awkward introvert who is also a genius and were inspired by that or could see parts of themselves in Halliday's character but now they're being told that, actually, because he pined after his friend's wife he's a sociopath! I think it could be so damaging to people who looked up to him. As I said, Halliday in the first book is flawed but so is everybody and he could still have been a brilliant role model for kids if Cline hadn't taken RP2 in this direction. For my final complaint regarding Halliday I felt like his relationship with Og and Kira was ruined in this book. Yes, in the first book his relationship with them was strained but I feel like they still loved each other. Even though Og had nothing to do with the company anymore Halliday still included Og in his will. I think Og still had affection for him and I never felt like they were friends through any sense of duty from Og. But here that relationship was totally butchered and Halliday felt like somebody Og and Kira tolerated because they felt sorry for him. And look where it got them, he totally violated Kira's privacy multiple times! Because of course Halliday couldn't just harmlessly pine over her, he had to go and do something absolutely mental. It just feels so out of character because even though he's a bit socially awkward he's a really smart man and should know better than to do this! It also at times felt like Halliday was the butt of their jokes which is just horrible! And not at all how I remembered any of these characters. As I said, maybe I'm mis-remembering but even so it was still a cause of discomfort and greatly affected my enjoyment of the book. But that's not all folks! Anorak isn't the only villain! Sorento is back! I just don't like the character at all so instantly I was annoyed because I dislike him so much but then he really wasn't involved that much at all which makes me wonder why Cline even brought him back to begin with?! He had one moment towards the end where he played a role in the death of Og and the "battle"/"escape" (how ever you want to word it) that ensued but I feel like this could have been done in a different way without having to bring Sorento back just for this. For spoiler-ey stuff that I did like. I liked Kira being more of a central character and getting to find out more about her. I think she's a really cool character and it was nice to go on her adventure this time around. I liked all the quests for the shards, especially the John Hughes one as a big John Hughes fan myself! I also liked the final battle between Og and Anorak. It's something that I think Cline does really well and also showed that he can do big, epic endings without it having to be a big battle sequence with lots of characters. 1v1 worked just as well and was just as enjoyable to read if not even more so. And that's the end of the spoiler section! Here's the tldr because I know this has been a long one! TLDR (Spoiler free) I had a lot of issues with Ready Player Two, specifically with the writing, pacing and handling of some of the key characters. I gave it 2 stars because I already know I'm not going to reread it so I wouldn't give it a 3 but I didn't dislike it enough to give it a 1. There were some elements that I did enjoy that managed to keep me going. Thanks so much for reading! Let me know if you've read RP2 and your thoughts or if you're planning on reading it (if so I hope you enjoy it more than I did!) Rating: ** Blog | Twitter | Goodreads (Read it first on my blog.)

Page 300 Update - Ready Player Two
Monday 30th November 2020 Page 300 update - Ready Player Two  First time reading. (Mild spoilers for Ready Player One and Ready Player Two) I don’t have a whole lot to add since my last update.  Thankfully I’m still somewhat enjoying the book and the pacing issues haven’t been as bad as I thought they could be so that’s good.  At times during the Prince quest it did feel like they were taking such a long time but they still had around 1 hour left afterwards which doesn’t feel like a lot of time but so far the Middle Earth task appears to be going pretty quickly.  I do have a feeling that one of the main characters is going to get properly killed off because I know Cline’s writing style and he isn’t afraid to do that but I’m also aware that it’s something the film studio would likely prefer to not happen based on changes they made for the RP1 movie.  We’ll need to see.  I only have 66 pages left and I suspect the ending will greatly impact my overall rating and honestly I’m not 100% sure what to expect.  Cline likes to write his endings with large action sequences both in RP1 and Armada but it doesn’t seem like the direction RP2 is going in.  We’ll need to see!  Current rating: ***

Page 200 Update - Ready Player Two
Monday 30th November 2020 Page 200 Update - Ready Player Two  First time reading.  (Mild spoilers for both Ready Player One and Ready Player Two)  Ok so I’m starting to enjoy it a bit more now but I still wouldn’t say I’m loving it and I definitely still have a lot of issues with it.  Now that it’s finally into the action I’m enjoying it a lot more probably because the pacing is better and Wade has less opportunities to be an asshole.  He’s not bragging as much or generally just being annoying so I can definitely tolerate him more now than I did at the start of the book.  All the other characters I’m pretty much fine with but I’m a bit sad that he introduced that new character and hasn’t used her since.  I am glad that Artemis/Samantha is properly back, though, because I do really like her character.  It feels like Cline is setting up for Samantha & Wade to get back together which I really hope doesn’t happen.  Also on the topic of characters let’s talk about how much I dislike the villains.  Anorak as an AI villain?  I hate it.  It’s basically making Halliday the villain which just feels wrong considering how bigged up the character is in the original book.  I know that this isn’t technically Halliday but it feels enough like him for it to just feel wrong to me and it feels like Cline is deliberately speaking badly about Halliday to make us dislike him.  I also think this is quite harmful because it’s portraying this socially awkward introvert but genius as actually being a sociopath so people who could see themselves in Halliday and be inspired by him are now being painted to look like a villain.  I just find it so harmful and I wish it was handled better.  I also have a huge issue with Sorento being back but luckily he has been pretty minor so far so it’s easy to ignore that he’s back.  I do dislike that Anorak refers to him as being “unhinged” after his time in prison as if the guy wasn’t unhinged before that, he literally killed so many people!  In terms of plot I do think it’s been moving along at a good pace due to the 12 hour time limit but I also feel like 12 hours is nowhere near enough time to di it so I’m already predicting pacing issues in the next 100 pages.  I’ve liked each way that he’s found the shards that he’s got so far (well he’s not got the third shard right now but I know what I mean) especially shard 3, as a huge John Hughes fan I’m really enjoying it!  I also liked that is is more women based with these tasks but I still don’t think that Cline write women well.  I am looking forward to seeing where it goes from here but also a little worries at the same time.  Current rating: ***

Page 100 Update - Ready Player Two
Sunday 29th November 2020 Page 100 Update - Ready Player Two  First time reading. (No spoilers) So I’m 100 pages in and I’m more frustrated than anything else right now.  It’s definitely not living up to the hype or expectations I had for the book and most of the time I’ve been angry or annoyed particularly with the writing and the main character.  The pacing is weird with parts that I think should have more time instead being told in one sentence and stuff that can get glossed over instead taking sooo much time like Wade’s morning routine.  We’re finally starting to get into some of the action now, though, so I’m cautiously excited about where it’s going to go.  While I do feel like the plot is a bit thin and just cobbled together to get another book/movie out of it, if it was at least done somewhat well then I could maybe forgive that but so far I feel like it’s just a cash grab (and one which I was so excited about!)  Also, as usual, Cline’s attempts to add women, POC and LGBT+ characters just feels painfully awkward but I appreciate the effort?  I suppose.  Current rating: **

I made this to bring the tag together a bit more, and show that it’s not just the SPN fandom with criticism. I’ve seen Walking Dead fans, Vampire Diaries fans, the Buffy gang, fans of the 100, and many more talking about this and using this tag and I’m really proud of them.
Racism, sexism, ableism and homophobia are big issues in media. Who knew.
