i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

as i progress through this relisten with ally i'm starting to feel a bit more charitable, in the sense that the album clearly charts the progression from trying to justify this relationship to realizing he's a dick & breaking up with him and there's a part of me that doesn't want to TOTALLY pass judgment on someone for making a stupid decision they clearly regret. i can kinda open my heart to the idea that she was heartbroken and vulnerable and that made her brain turn to mush
i'm not excusing her though. it's a real "cool motive still murder" kind of situation. i understand why. doesn't make it right
re-listening to ttpd via watching ally sheehan's reaction vid and the songs are actually not terrible it's just that since i know what they're about i have mental blocks up. i've been able to get past this kind of barrier before - i don't really get the appeal of most of her exes - but this is different. i don't want to get past this. i don't want to ignore all the ways taylor has disappointed me just so i can listen to some songs. and none of the songs are good enough to break the barrier on their own so they probably aren't worth demolishing it from my side

Swift said the track is “a commentary on what I’ve seen in the industry that I’ve been in over time". "I used to sit in record labels trying to get a record deal when I was a little kid. And they’d say, ‘you know, you remind us of’ and then they’d name an artist, and then they’d kind of say something disparaging about her, ‘but you’re this, you’re so much better in this way or that way.’ And that’s how we teach women to see themselves, as like you could be the new replacement for this woman who’s done something great before you. I picked women who have done great things in the past and have been these architypes of greatness in the entertainment industry. Clara Bow was the first ‘it girl.’ Stevie Nicks is an icon and an incredible example for anyone who wants to write songs and make music."

(Im the same anon from yday) - I thought about it a little bit more and have some more developed Thoughts: I feel like Taylor has the ability to make really excellent music (like folklore which was a 10/10 album for me) and then she can also make really bad music like that Brendon urie song on lover and you need to calm down etc. I think after how incredible folklore/evermore were I thought she was going in a new direction musically and then midnights came out and it was just okay. Some songs are gr8 on midnights but as a whole to me just doesn’t compare to folklore/evermore. I feel like capitalism comes into play in her putting out mediocre music lolz but that’s not a fully formed thought rn
yeah that's exactly how i felt about the folkmore -> midnights transition. like it felt she was settling into a comfortable place in her career, where she could just explore musically without trying to chase pop success. to me, it made perfect sense as a move for someone who'd seen the downsides of massive fame and the way the public can turn. take the money and dignity and get the hell out, as she put it on "the lucky one". and then midnights happened and it was this return to the pop sphere and kind of mid and now she's become the biggest artist alive on a mediocre album and lazy re-records of better albums. it feels like a cynical commercial move bc it doesn't feel like earned success.
and her releasing even more new music after releasing so much in the past few years just feels exhausting and even more cash-grab

usually being aroace doesn't really affect my ability to enjoy songs about being attracted to someone who's bad for you bc the concept of "being drawn to something even though it's not a good idea" is not exclusive to romance and i can still connect with the emotion if it's well-conveyed but with ttpd i'm just like. i really don't think it's that hard to NOT fuck a racist

wait hold up. i feel like i remember hearing people say that hozier might not get to number 1 bc taylor was dropping this week and would knock him out. but i'm looking at the charts and she's nowhere to be seen so is it too soon for anything from ttpd to be counted or is hozier succeeding because she's flopping. it's probably the first but PLEASE let it be the second

i feel like i shouldn't clown on those lines bc the point is that she and her partner are not these iconic poets but there's still something that gets under my skin about it. it's like how when you go out of your way to deny an accusation it makes the accusation look more true. even though she said she doesn't think she's an iconic poet i'm now wondering why she brought it up. and with "clara bow" she's definitely trying to situate herself in a lineage of iconic artists so it's hard to read "i'm not an icon i'm normal" as genuine
the chelsea hotel line on "ttpd" is just referencing that patti smith and dylan thomas have stayed there but my main association with "chelsea hotel" is the leonard cohen song so my first reaction to the line was "fuck off taylor YOU don't get to reference that song it's for people who are ugly and have the music and as of this album you're 0/2"

taylor: *deleting one concise phrase to add three competing images that overcrowd the song and don't leave her space to breathe or let a moment land* do you think the tiktokers will keep calling me emily dickinson
jack antonoff: *cranking up the brightness on a synth that sounds like sharpening a dull blade on a wet stone* you're so fucking smart
