A MADNA style ballad reflecting the bittersweet nature of love. This song in particular goes closely together with sweet dream.

According to interviews, when Takashi was writing the music he knew the lyrics would be something incredible. He wanted people to focus on and be drawn to the lyrics of the song rather than the track itself. Rio also said he had the same feeling of wanting the song to stand out and so was conscious of that when playing the drums. While keeping the volume very minimal, he dared to include some of THE MADNA's fastest drumming phrases.

The interviewer mentioned they feel like this song breaks new grounds for THE MADNA. Ryota said perhaps that’s because of its mature/adult side. As they are getting older, they want to express things that they can only express at their current age. They hoped the audience would get the sense of the band extending themselves and their abilities further than they ever have before.

世界線 World lines: Upon doing some research, I found that world lines are connected to the theory of relativity. Albert Einstein once wrote: “People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion. Time, in other words, he said, is an illusion.“

Through his discovery, Einstein showed that space and time are intertwined. He also showed that gravity is a curving or warping of space rather than an invisible force that attracts objects to one another. The basic idea is that just as gravity can stretch or warp space, it can also dilate time. So it seems that a world line is a time-like curve in spacetime. It’s the unique path that an object has as it travels through both space and time.

In science fiction movies they often base time travel off this; more specifically, time travel into the future. The Japanese word, 世界線 is also used to refer to different worlds or parallel worlds.

Therefore with this in mind, by lightly analyzing the end verse perhaps you could say that the two of them are searching for the world and the future that they can be together in. Although the end inevitably seems to draw near - they were so desperately trying to find a way to change the future. Their love forever eternalized inside a sweet dream.

A fictional story of two people fighting against 'the fear of being torn apart'.

夢現: Yumeutsutsu is the state of being half asleep and half awake, being between dream and reality 泡沫: Utakata means things like ephemeral, transient or fleeting. It can also translate as “the bubbles floating on the surface of water or liquids.” Bubbles vanish quickly and used as a metaphor, it gives the imagery of something being as fleeting or momentary as a bubble. If something is ephemeral it means that it doesn’t last long- that it only lasts for a short time or has a short life. So perhaps we can tie the lyrics to the beauty of the fleetingness of life and the importance of cherishing things which only last a brief moment. Life is fleeting, moments are fleeting - it’s inevitable that eventually everything must come to an end or disappear at some point in time. So we should embrace and appreciate those moments and things whilst we have the chance. We should live fully in the present moment. I highly encourage you to read up on 「物の哀れ」(もののあわれ ”mono no aware” ). Originating from classical Heian period literature, “mono no aware” refers to our awareness of the impermanence or ephemeral nature of all things. It is the deeply felt, powerful emotions which stir within us upon this bittersweet realization. A melancholic appreciation of the beauty in the transience of the existence of things and the gentle sadness it invokes as we connect it to the reality of life. The transient moments in life, youth, romance, nature and the changing of the seasons are all examples of mono no aware. Common imagery is birds, the moon, flowers - especially the cherry blossoms in spring. Motoori Norinaga, a scholar during the Japanese Edo Period (1730-1801), believed that ‘to know mono no aware is to discern the power and essence, not just of the moon and the cherry blossoms, but of every single thing existing in this world, and to be stirred by each of them’. So for me personally, the usage of 「夢、泡沫」 in the lyrics brings about this beautiful dreamlike imagery of the impermanence of dreams and those dreams vanishing. Dreams only last for a fleeting moment, for when you wake up you stop dreaming. It’s inevitable that the sun will rise each morning and in turn those dreams are torn apart by the daylight.

A cheerful song about enjoying life, just being yourself regardless of what other people may think of you and never giving up. In an interview, Ryota said that during the pre-production stage, the song brought to mind a colorful and warm image like drawing freely with crayons, so he decided to incorporate that feeling into the lyrics too.

Chupa chups: world-renowned Spanish lollipop brand; the first sweet on a stick that truly captured the imagination of children.

go my way: this phrase is often used in Japan to mean “just be yourself and do it your own way”.

爆走(bakusou): racing noisily, roaring, running or moving forward at a fast speed without hesitation.

七転び八起き(nanakorobiyaoki):

This is a Japanese proverb which translates as “Fall down seven times, get up eight”. Life will always try and knock you down, but it doesn’t matter how many times you may stumble or fall, the important thing is how many times you get yourself back up again. It means to never give up. Like the English saying “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

CREAM SODA: as mentioned in various interviews, this is a song which is all about nostalgia, old school Harajuku culture and embracing the things that are special to us. Takashi wrote the music filling the song with the kind of music which saved his life back in the days. In addition, not only was CREAM SODA a Harajuku fashion brand representative of 80s rock culture, but Ryota also talks about how even as an adult, the drink cream soda is seen as something special or like a dream drink. He mentions how if you go to a café, you sometimes find yourself hesitating and wondering if it's actually okay to order it or not. This got him thinking about how it's nice that certain things can remain special to us no matter how much time goes by. So when he asked himself what was special to him, Harajuku came to mind. Although the culture has changed and it's become a place he can pretty much go to whenever he wants without a second thought, he really loved the atmosphere of those days.

Ryota coined the term “spark future” ⚡️

青くハジけたteenage days: The color blue and the kanji 青 (blue) is often associated with youth, adolescence and immaturity. Fresh, bright, young and full of energy and inexperience.

肩で風を切って: it means to walk with an air of self confidence or to walk around with swagger. If you walk 'cutting the wind with your shoulders' then you are moving forward confidently without any hesitation or without anything holding you back. From what I was told it doesn't carry any negative connotations.

幼き初期衝動: I guess perhaps these youthful initial impulses are those intense feelings you get when you are young and inexperienced - the feelings you get when you experience things for the first time. Things like your first love or first concert.

Notes:

The MADNA’s first summer song & youth anthem. According to various interviews, they wanted to make a song that would fire the crowd up and get fans excited at shows just like a summer festival.

Ryota got the inspiration to write the lyrics for this song by watching his young puppy Guu interact with other dogs much bigger than him. He was barking back at them mercilessly regardless of his tiny size. It reminded him of himself and the band and how they must face the upcoming challenges head on. At the time, they were going head to head with a lot of different bands and he felt like he had to be in a fighting stance at all times in this “battle of the bands”.

存在価値(そんざいかち): value to society, value of one’s existence. So he’s saying that if he doesn't do what he needs to get done then he will lose the value of his very existence.

成敗(せいばい): 侍の言葉 A term used by the samurai which means things like to punish, to defeat, to kill, punishment etc.

刀(かたな): a katana is a traditional Japanese single-edged sword. They were used by samurai in feudal Japan and worn with the edge facing upward.

下克上 (げこくじょう): A term used to refer to juniors dominating or overthrowing their seniors / inferiors overthrowing their superiors/ the lower class rising up against the upper class. Like a giant-killing, it’s an inversion of social order. THE MADNA themselves are starting from the very bottom.

万歳(ばんざい): “banzai” a Japanese cheer or battle cry used to express enthusiasm or celebrate victory and triumph. It originated from the old phrase (may you live for) ten thousand years. These days it’s used as a celebratory cheer eg. “Huzzah!” “Hurray!” “Yay!!” “YASSSS!”.

In this sense 大衆 (たいしゅう) refers to the public or common people (as opposed to the upper class or in this case those above who they are overthrowing). So paired together with banzai, it suggests a celebration of the people at the bottom. In this case we could most likely infer that’s the band themselves. So it’s a celebratory cheer for being who they are.. Hell yeah we got this! Let’s fucking go!! Honestly speaking I wasn't sure the best way to translate this line and I just like saying the word BANZAI so I left it in as it is. If I can come up with a better idea later I'll come back and change it but for now, banzai it is. Open to creative input!

ライダーキック Rider kick: A “Rider kick” is the signature finishing move from the popular Japanese series Kamen Rider. According to a fan page, although it comes in various forms, “it traditionally consisted of a flying side kick and was used against the monster after it had been weakened from fighting with the Rider.” Ryota does the kick on stage during the performance. Ideally the fans do the kick together with him too if space permits.

殺るか殺られるか/やるかやられるか: This phrase means it’s kill or be killed, do or die, dog-eat-dog, beat or get beaten etc. 殺る is used colloquially and means to kill or “do someone in”.

Giant-killing: A term used to describe when the underdog beats the competition. Often used in sports to describe a player or team that defeats a much stonger or well-known opponent unexpectedly. This success is sometimes referred to as a giant-killing. As the win is highly unanticipated, it can be an exhilarating turn of events in a match and can also lead to an uproar or huge upset.

テンション Tension: it’s probably worth pointing out that the word tension has the opposite meaning in Japanese than what it does in English. In English we would usually use it to describe negative emotional tension, anxiety or some kind of mental strain - so the lower the better! In Japanese it’s often used to mean being in high spirits, having a lot of energy or being really excited and in a good mood. So in Japanese having “high” tension is a good thing, whereas having “low” tension means you’re feeling quite down, drained and unenthusiastic.

(敬礼)けいれい solute: It’s in brackets as he doesn’t actually sing this but rather does the action itself. During the live show the fans solute to the members at this point.

運命共同体(うんめいきょうどうたい): a phrase meaning “to be in the same boat”, “share a common destiny/fate” or “to feel or have a strong bond or connection together”.

絶頂(ぜっちょう)極上(ごくじょう): This is an interesting choice of word combination. Zecchou refers to the peak, height or climax of something. It can also be used in combination with other words to mean being on cloud nine or feeling on top of the world. This is mostly likely where “the peak” from the line “always the peak right now” derives from. Gokujou is used to describe something that is first-rate, the finest quality, supreme, prime, divine or the best.

ビー玉 (a marble): a glass sphere forms a convex lens and inverts the image, turning it upside-down. So if you look at the world through one it will be inverted. If you look up lensball photography you can get a better idea of the imagery.

明日を待っているんだ (待ってたんだ): He writes this sentence in the progressive continuous tense but sings it in the past tense (am waiting for vs was waiting for)

君だけ: it emphasises the fact that this person is the only one not there - the only person not in this world. Since the title of the song was translated on Spotify into English as “In a world without you alone” I thought it would be cute to also use it as the final line.

蠢(Ugomeki): means to crawl, wriggle, squirm - the movement an insect makes.

To me it also gives the imagery of struggling or being trapped, trying to get away or survive.

君は境界性人格「　」: The written lyrics say “you are borderline personality (disorder)”. However in the song he only sings the words “borderline”. I can’t say for sure what the 「　」 means. Perhaps it is representative of a barrier or is showing the boundary lines. It could also represent the fact that *something* is there lurking inside. I would love to hear other peoples interpretations.

螺子れ(ねじれ): He turned the noun “a screw” or helix into a verb. But the word “nejiru” commonly used with a different kanji means to twist or twirl.

快楽主義者 (かいらくしゅぎしゃkairakushugisha): A hedonist - a person who believes that the pursuit of pleasure is the most important thing in life. A pleasure-seeker.

Notes:

Ryota said in an interview that he had a lot of fun writing these lyrics and there isn’t really any deep underlying message hidden within them. He wrote them as if he was telling a story or drawing a picture. This is pretty evident as there is a lot of commotion and strong, loud imagery going on in the lyrics which certainly brought along a few challenges when translating the song. I can only do my best to help you visualize the scene that he is setting. It’s up to you to use your imagination and bring the story to life.

バグ (bug): Maybe like a bug in the system?

Sid Vicious: “Sid Vicious was the bassist of punk band the Sex Pistols from 1977-1978. When his girlfriend Nancy Spungen was murdered in October 1978, he was charged with the crime. He died of a heroin overdose before the case could come to trial.” Ryota idolizes the punk scene, especially the fleeting and tragic romance of Sid and Nancy, so you’re likely to find multiple references scattered throughout his lyrics and MC. The MADNA Monthly Show also takes place in a live house sharing the same name as the famous Chelsea Hotel in New York where Nancy was found murdered.

カチ込む: It means カチコミ殴り込み

Generally a term used with Yakuza, gangsters and delinquents. You’ll also see it appear a lot in manga or anime with that theme. It’s used for a group of multiple people striking and attacking another group (hostile). Usually comes with intense emotions of anger, dissatisfaction, resentment and demand. Other related terms: to smash, beat up, crush, punch up, “kill them” etc.

ツギハいた/ツギはぐ: It’s like patchwork or piecing. I wanted to capture the imagery of him taking all of his dreams and piecing them together like patchwork. 🧵🪡

The phrase “pieces of dream” was coined in English by his previous band, so I wanted to incorporate that too.

バビロン (Babylon): Babylon was the capital city of the ancient Babylonian Empire. Derived from the Akkadian word babilu meaning “Gate of God” or “Gate of the Gods”. It was the most glorious city of the ancient world with giant walls encircling the city. It gradually grew in size and grandeur, a heavily-populated city full of magnificent structures, palaces, gardens and temples. However as Babylon grew in power, so did the number of attacks against the city and the city underwent periods of long battle where Babylon would constantly rise and fall. Eventually the city began its descent into deterioration and decline and was completely destroyed. The city once known as 'the glory of kingdoms' became a place of utter desolation, forgotten among man.

The band did a photoshoot for the cover of Cure Magazine (Vol.223, April 2022) using this song as a motif. In the artist photos, the members all wear black and white clothing, whilst surrounded by an array of bright, vivid colors. The short promotional video starts in black in white and then suddenly comes to life in color.

This song is also often used to close their live show. There is so much fire and passion burning when they play this song. It really comes alive on the stage.

My interpretation: This song gives me hella Gerard Way comic book vibes. This gang of dark heroes (outlaws) assembling an army, stirring things up and going up against the world. Heading for “Babylon”, King Ryota with his Japanese katana in hand, laser beams shooting everywhere - causing chaos and utter mayhem. Ready to kick some ass in an endeavor to find some excitement - all in the hopes of adding a splash of color to this dull and mundane life. Not at the control of any God, nor with any grand plan or design in place. They’re setting out to build a kingdom of their own. The final question remaining - Are you ready to join them?

パクッとキメんぞ: it means to bite down/take illegal drugs. So he’s like “Let’s get high - but legally!”. I wasn’t exactly sure how to translate it as I’m not sure what drugs he’s referring to (although パクッと refers to eating/biting). I chose to go with “let’s get cracking” to refer to both tripping, but also “to get started”. You could probably also say something like “Let’s crush it!”. This “legal high” has been a reoccurring theme for THE MADNA. They want to give people this unique thrill and natural high that only they as a band can offer. One you can taste by going to their lives and listening to their music. They want people to get hooked. They want to provide some excitement in people’s everyday lives and stimulate or give them a reason to keep living and pushing forward. A place to escape from the hardships of reality.

文明開化: Civilization and enlightenment; Japan's Westernization movement during the Meiji era (Westernisation).

極楽浄土: One of the Buddhist pure lands known as Sukhavati or Amitabha's Pure Land in Mahayana Buddhism. It is associated with Amitayus, the Buddha of Eternal Life, is also known as Amitābha. Also commonly referred to as the Western Pure Land or Western Paradise.

“The Buddha of Infinite Light (Sanskrit, Amitabha), is lord of the Pure Land called the Western Paradise. Devotees believe that absolute faith in Amitabha entitles a person to be reborn in that paradise.”

共感覚: Synaesthesia - a neurological condition in which you experience one of your senses through another. In other words a crossing of the senses.

脳天に問うぜdirect: 脳天 is used to mean head/skull/brains. But it also has a higher level nuance like “at the top of your head” / “your entire skull”. I got thinking about the nature of the song and if one asked the top of their head, what exactly would they find? It lead me to question what exactly the highest part of the mind is. There are varying levels of consciousness and stages of the mind. This song continually references Buddhism and spirituality/enlightenment and it got me thinking that it could be referring to spiritual inquiry, connecting to your higher self and going past the conscious and subconscious mind and into the state of superconscious which is a very powerful state. The superconscious mind has no boundaries and contains infinite possibilities and energy. It is believed that access is granted by strengthening the higher mind.

巻き込んでくぜ : it means to get involved in something. I chose to go with the phrase “suck you in” as it also echoes the following: when something completely takes all of a person's attention, to physically pull someone or something in, to attract by using an inexorable force.

天上天下唯我独尊: It is considered to be a well-known statement of the Buddha, spoken when the Buddha first emerged from his mother's womb. It's said that after Buddha Sakayuni was born, he took 7 steps from his mother and said this while pointing to both heaven and earth. The meaning of the phrase means something like "I am the highest in this world; I am foremost in this world; I am the best in this world; this is the last birth; there is no further becoming here."

頂天: He says てっぺん (teppen) which means the top, summit or highest point of something. It’s similar to 頂点 (chouten). There is a different more commonly used kanji combination for ‘teppen’, but I guess he chose this combination as 天 has to do with the skies/heavens. They’re aiming to be the best.

殺死骸南無demo蟻 (ころしがいなんでもあり): When translating, I focused on the meaning of the hiragana. Ryota stylised this line using a combination of the kanji for 殺 kill + 死骸 dead bodies + 南無 amen/hail (Buddhism) + demo + 蟻 ant. The written format is kinda gibberish and I think most likely he’s just playing with the words. In this case he is putting kanji with the hiragana that have the same pronunciation and has chosen the ones with the darkest vibes. Elements of Buddhism, one of Japan’s main religions, are also continually referenced throughout the song. I don’t really have any good ideas how to link it all together which is why I have focused on what he is saying rather than what is written. Can only ask the main source, so if ever find out I’ll let you know.

Nandemoari is a phrase meaning things like “anything goes”, “anything can happen” or “there’s no telling what’s going to happen”. This is another one of THE MADNA’s key concepts and one of philosophies in which the band was formed - being a band that isn’t restricted in what they do or the music they create. They are open to anything and the possibilities are endless.

So if you can take anything away from this experience, it’s to just let yourself get high on the natural energy of THE MADNA, a place where anything goes, a place where you can just be yourself, a place where people can come together and co-exist with this insane “love & peace” band and its members. Because we’re all a little mad here, right? :3

I’ve left the English verse as it is in the original lyrics. It’s kinda hard to say for sure, but perhaps he was acting a certain way or wearing a mask in front of people so not to be disliked, but in the end the lies ended up hurting others and so he’s trying to change himself. I think you can interpret this as you like - make of it what you will :)

Notes:

An anthem of youth, adolescence and innocence.

The imagery depicted in the lyrics most likely derives from the word 青春 (seishun) which is made up of the kanji for “blue” and “spring”.

When we talk about the “springtime of life” or “springtime of youth” we are talking about a period of inexperienced youthful innocence which is accompanied by enthusiasm and idealism (source: wordhippo).

Youth is a stage in our lives where we are full of energy and determination. Growing older sometimes we get so caught up in life that we forget what it means to really live it. What message is taken from these lyrics will vary from person to person; however my interpretation is that this song represents the importance of embracing youthfulness and sparking those intense childlike emotions and that enthusiasm we all have burning deep within us.

初まる(始まる): He changes the kanji to create a double meaning. 始まる means to start or begin. 「初」 stands for new or first.

I left the English as it is, however my guess is that the prepositions have been left out and it probably means something along the lines of: I want you TO smile IN THE end.
