anyone else remember when hope solo and abby wambach were publicly supportive of the magicjack owner after all that drama came to light and pretty much victim blamed those that spoke out against him? yeah...

tobin really commented “ily” on one of christen’s IG pics and people really think they’re in the closet and any acknowledgement of them as a couple is outing them 🤦‍♀️

here’s a rant
So i know some uswnt players haven’t played like themselves this tournament, but I really just blame Vlatko for that. Sure, the team as a whole is responsible for how they play, but their play is a reflection of the coach. Where was their usual creativity and confidence? We haven’t seen that since before the tournament started. I think after the Sweden game Vlatko started to lose the locker room. I think his tactics for the Australia game really solidified the fact that this team was not going to get much farther in the tournament. It seemed like he did not have confidence in them to win that game, and I think that took a toll on most of the players, understandably. He wanted to play it safe which means he wasn’t confident in them and in turn, the team lost confidence in him. It just sucks they couldn’t do what Sydney said they did in 2015 with Jill and win in spite of him.
Again, I know the team is partly responsible but a lot of the responsibility falls on Vlatko. It just seems like he crapped himself. I don’t fully understand what happened. He’s been in charge for almost two years now and we have never looked like this in all the time he’s been our coach. We’ve played some good, HARD teams, no matter how much people want to claim we’ve only played “bad” underdeveloped sides. Before the Olympics, we played Sweden and Canada twice and won 3 games and drew once. We’ve played Brazil, France, Spain, Japan, and the Netherlands. Those are good, HARD teams to beat and we did it. So what happened? Vlatko happened. His subs were ridiculous, his constant lineup changes were ridiculous. You cannot have a different lineup every night and expect things to gel smoothly. It doesn’t matter if it's the Olympics and its a tight turnaround and people need to rest. You have FIVE subs. You pick a starting XI and stick with it. It’s been two years, you should know who works well with who by now. Also his subbing this tournament has been ridiculous. Changing out an entire line at once? What is this, hockey? What was with Pinoe and Tobin taking set pieces and corners that have been absolutely trash even before the Olympics started? Why didnt Press take more? WHERE WAS KRISTIE!? She takes great corners. Why did he name her to the original 18 player roster if he was only going to use her for less than 20 mins? I don’t understand.
And I don’t think the roster selection was the problem. They weren’t bad because of their age. This team has always been “older,” and that’s never been a problem. Look at our record with all of our “old” players. Look at Canada, they’re just as old. Christine Sinclair and Erin McLeod are 38, you have 6 other players who are in their late 20s-mid 30s. Look at the ages of Brazil’s teams. Sweden has 13 players on their squad that are in the late 20s-late 30s. Age is not the problem. The problem is Vlatko didn’t trust himself or this team enough. This was not the time for him to lose his head.
This just sucks for some of the players who are likely to retire. I gotta say tho, I think we’ll be seeing a lot of the core players stay around for one last cycle. Again, I don’t think age is a problem for this team. Early 30s is NOT! OLD! Especially if you’re in shape and in the right mindset. The 2023 world cup is just around the corner. Qualifying for that is next year. It’s so close. The 2024 Olympics is right after. It’s not that far away, so it’s not unrealistic to think that players like Alex, Tobin, Press, Kelley, and Alyssa go for it. Especially with how this tournament ended, I know they don’t want their national career to end the same. I just don’t see Pinoe, Becky or Carli sticking around.
(also not to beat a dead horse or sound like a sore loser or something but you just cant help but side eye the refs and VAR because even if we had some trouble staying onside, we were absolutely ROBBED of goals that should have counted because VAR was incompetent. Alex’s header against australia? We should have WON that game and maybe our confidence would have been there and we’d have a different outcome. Christen’s first goal against the Netherlands? I dont know how VAR can look at the replay for THAT LONG and not overturn the offside call. It was clearly onside. If you are even with a defender, YOU. ARE. ON.SIDE. we should have won that game. It should have never gone to extra time and pks. They robbed us of that goal and if it stood like it should have, considering, ya know, the actual offside rules, then maybe we’d have our confidence back and we’d have a different outcome this tournament.)
-- rant over -- (for now)
