Promptober Day 14: Hound + Day 31: Grave

Thank you to everyone who's followed along with my inktober journey! It means a lot to me, and I hope you enjoyed it! ^^

When a new graveyard is opened, it is believed that the first body buried in it stays there, defending the graveyard against any who would try to desecrate it. As a result, it became the custom to bury a black dog in a graveyard first, resulting in the Grim, honorable spirits of the hounds that stand vigilant in life and in death. It is unknown how much truth there is to this folktale, but the Grim themselves can be found all across the world, defending those who have passed, ensuring their rest is not disturbed.

Promptober Day 18: Key + Day 28: Knight

It is said that a Death Knight is created when a paladin dies after breaking their oath without seeking atonement, transforming them into creatures of darkness and hatred. The Locke Knight, however, is the polar opposite of such a concept. When a paladin acts in service to their oath, unwavering in determination and passion, they can sometimes surpass the bounds of death itself in order to continue doing so. Locke Knights bind their own souls to their suits of armor, continuing their service until they are forced to stop. Unfortunately, at least for those who attempt to stand in the way of a Locke Knight, they are extremely difficult to kill. On top of having all the benefits of the battle prowess they had in life, the pure determination of their souls keeps them bound to their armor, and it is only by using a Locke Knight's own blade to its chest that its soul can be released.

Promptober Day 12: Depth + Day 22: Monster + Day 27: Decay

At the dawn of the world, there were vast caverns beneath the surface of the material plane, a place known as The Underdark. For hundreds of years, the denizens of the Underdark were able to live their lives, but then came the Fall of Achelis. As retribution for the acts of Achelis' queen, the floating island was sent hurtling down, through the ocean floor, creating the world's largest graveyard as the Underdark was flooded. The tunnels were given a new name: "The Underworld", as the skeletons of its previous denizens littered the ground all throughout. However, death on such a massive scale does not happen without incident. The combined anger and grief caused undead abominations to rise from the remains, the worst of all being the Underworld Tyrant. With three heads and a bone-chilling breath, it stalks the flooded tunnels, eager to share its pain with any it might encounter.

Promptober Day 4: Crash

Hyades were once known to be peaceful, bringing rain and fertility wherever they traveled. This changed, however, when an accident befell a warrior that they loved. The hyades grieved their fallen hero, and discovered an untouched strength within. Instead of rain alone, they became the embodiment of storms. The crash of lightning and the roaring thunder invigorated them, and they embraced the freedom of having no attachments. This made them unique among nymphs, as they rarely stayed in any place for long. Instead, they followed the storms that they now personified, resting atop mountains and along the coasts, ready to follow the next storm wherever it went.

Promptober Day 16: Capture + Day 26: Mirror

The Psychiceps Mycelium's one observable goal is to reproduce, to replicate and spread as far as it possibly can, creating a network of mycelium systems throughout the material plane. It accomplishes this by luring mortal beings to its core, where they are confronted by their own reflection. When a creature sees its own reflection in the core of the mycelium, its spirit is drawn out of its body, consumed by the mycelium, leaving a soulless husk behind. The mycelium transforms the husks into extensions of itself, sending them out into the world to gather more creatures and to sprout more mycelium. It is unknown why the mycelium imprisons the souls within itself, as it does not consume them, and has shown no observable use for them. This mystery has invoked fear in those who study them, as whatever hidden goal they have for the souls, it is certainly something for the world to fear.

Whilst it may bear a passing resemblance to some types of plants, the Psychiceps Mycelium's alien nature ensures that it is far beyond any kind of natural life form. Some theorize that it was once a normal type of fungus, exposed to energies of the far realm and warped beyond recognition, while others believe it was the opposite, a creature from beyond the known planescape that attempted to adapt itself to a form that mortals might recognize. Whatever the origin of these entities, they are to be feared and avoided at all costs.

Combined Promptobers: Day 13: Eyes / Day 19: Orbit / Day 23: Angel

I made the art, and my boyfriend wrote up the lore and stat sheet. The Spirit of Death is an official figure in Arklands - you'll hear more of him as we publish more on the world!

Of all the deities revered by mortals, none is quite as esoteric as Mora, the Spirit of Death. Despite being part of what is often considered a lesser group of deities, Mora stands apart, being distinct in both power and posture. He is not merely a god devoted to death, or a protector of the sanctity of life; Mora is Death. However, despite the fear that he invokes in the minds of mortals, Mora is not a figure to be frightened of. He knows that he need not chase anyone down nor hasten any creature's end; because even those who live for hundreds of years or seek countless ways to extend their lives will always, eventually, come to him. He can afford to be kind, to be patient, for he knows that he is inevitable.

Oft seen in a dark cloak and hood, Mora has created his reputation over the ages, rarely seen, rarely interfering. However, on the occasion that he must involve himself, he sheds his cloak and reveals his true form. To any who have the misfortune of encountering him in such a state, there is only one thing to do: make peace with yourself, for your life has reached its end.

Day 11: Sleep + Day 17: Venom

Finals drained me but I'm alive and catching up! I made the art, and my boyfriend wrote up the lore and stat sheet. Tap the link below if you want to use the sheet in your own game!

Though frightening in appearance, the somnivore is not a threat in the way one would normally expect. Rather than a craving for flesh or blood, this small creature feeds on the dreams of sleeping victims, slipping into homes or camps and draining them of their rest and peace. Despite this, the creatures are often sought after for their venom, which can be extremely useful for incapacitating targets, and their status as a natural enemy of the dream spirits known as quori.

One night of the somnivore's effect will only lead to a restless night of sleep, but if they are not discovered and removed quickly, the visitations of one can lead to much harsher consequences. The exhaustion escalates night after night, leading to stress and irritability, and in extreme cases, madness.

Promptober Day 10: Puzzle

I rolled randomly for the monster type and got "fey" which eventually brought about a little guy.

Of the many denizens of the feywild, none pique the curious mind as much as Benjamin Ratselmeister, the Master of Puzzles. A bipedal cat-like creature, he travels across the planes with his giant snail, Schnecke, who dutifully pulls his cart of oddities along. He has a variety of powerful items that he sells to those he meets, but they very often come with caveats or... shall we say interesting prices. That being said, he has never been known to have ill intent, so while one should be cautious when meeting him, if you listen to what he says, you should be quite alright.

Promptober Day 9: Frost

A more recent addition to the ranks of golems, frost golems are powerful, even beyond the resistance to conventional and magical attacks that all golems share. With frost magically formed around their bodies, they are able to slow or even freeze opponents in place, allowing them to tear through enemies with unmatched efficiency. Unfortunately, their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness, as the ice that grants them their power also makes them vulnerable to fire. Despite this weakness, frost golems are still a force to be reckoned with.

If you are ever out in the open ocean and see a small island, maybe 100 feet long, that wasn't there yesterday, be cautious - because you might have run into an Alcyoneus Beetle. These massive earth elementals are fairly docile, sometimes staying asleep for years on end, but they can be quite destructive unintentionally if they are disturbed. To truly witness the might of the Alcyoneus Beetle, one only has to look towards the plume of dark smoke billowing out of its horn. If it feels it is in danger, the elemental will cause an eruption of volcanic rock to burst out of its horn, raining down on anything surrounding it. Thankfully, there is not much in the world that poses a threat to a creature of its size, and if you do find something that fits the bill, you probably have bigger problems.
