Ceramic Architectural Decoration
Iran, 13th century
Tiles like this would probably have embellished the tops of fortress walls as decorative projections. The molding process used to make this tile would have allowed for the easy production of identical pieces, an important consideration in a region in which symmetry and repetition were highly valued. The arabesque design, molded in three dimensions, emphasizes the interlacing pattern of elements weaving over and under one another. This decorative feature can also be found in other objects from the era, such as metalwork.

Chinese ambassadors (on the left) carry bundles of silk and a collection of silkworm cocoons, alongside Turkish ambassadors (with long hair) on the right. These are part of the Afrasiab murals, which were created in Samarkand (now in Uzbekistan) in the 600s CE. These murals are one of the few remaining examples of the artwork of the region, which at the time was a major trade hub along the Silk Roads.

Saber
Turkish, probably Istanbul 1522–66
This saber is fitted with one of the finest and best-preserved Islamic blades of the sixteenth century. Its gold-inlaid decoration consists of Qur'anic inscriptions that stress the sovereignty of God and the wisdom and power of his servant Solomon. These appear to be clever allusions to the Ottoman sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The equally opulent cross guard is chiseled in relief and damascened in gold, and was formerly inlaid with gems. The grip is a later replacement.
