FINAL PROJECT: CAREER DAY
Tumblr media
SOCIAL SCIENCE ON JOBS & OCCUPATIONS FOR 2 PRIMARIA
You’re never too young to think about your dream job.
This lesson plan is curated to incorporate the four linguistic skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking into a usual topic in a Social Science class. It is important to start teaching this Jobs & Occupations lesson while students are young for them to be able to acknowledge and express their interests.
The goals are to be able to tell the various common occupations, be able to describe what the job entails and to be able to retain this knowledge. Furthermore, the terminologies the students are going to learn are needed in everyday conversations. Their knowledge of this topic will prove effective and useful especially when they are applying to be professionals already.
LESSON PLAN
Students will be asked to wear a costume or bring something related to their job to be presented in class for Career Day. This lesson would also make use of materials such as pens, a laptop and a projector.
The lesson requires about 90 minutes (or an equivalent two class sessions in my school) to fully grasp the information and maximise the resources prepared. The lesson includes the following:
Short video screening, (listening)
Presentation by the students, (speaking & listening)
Class activity and (writing & speaking)
A homework assignment (writing & reading)
PART 1: VIDEO SCREENING
Younger students appreciate visuals more than any other resources when learning a new topic. To introduce the job & occupations vocabulary, short videos from Youtube will be shown. This activity will further familiarize and inform students about the different jobs & occupations other than their dream or own preference.
Tumblr media
PART 2: PRESENTATION OF THE STUDENTS
The students will do a Show & Tell about what they are wearing or what they brought in class with these guide questions,
What are you wearing?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Why do you want to be _______ when you grow up?
What does a ______ do?
The students will be evaluated by how much they are able to express themselves in English and how well they are able to understand their classmates. The teacher/s and I’s roles are to work hand and hand in preparing the class and informing their parents to help us with this activity. As a language assistant, I can help prepare the students prior to Career Day by doing our usual one-on-one speaking activity where I can practice asking the guide questions.
Below are examples of Career Day (in the Philippines):

PART 3: CLASS ACTIVITY
CLASSMATE BINGO
This is a classic fail-safe activity used in class. Given that the main activity of this lesson involves speaking in front of class, it is important to allow students to bond and participate with each other. The idea is to cross off a row (or all the squares) by making their classmates sign whose dream job is what is written on the card. This activity is also for the mastery of pronunciations of the different jobs & occupations. Here are the prompts for the students to use:

PART 4: HOMEWORK
A LETTER TO MY FUTURE SELF
To retain their knowledge about the different job & occupations and its tasks, the students are asked to write or draw to their older selves. The idea is for the students to figure out their goals and ambitions and be able to reflect on it at the end of the school year or in the future.
As a response to the different learning styles and levels of achievements among students, the activities included in the lesson vary in skills needed: Listening and Speaking skills are used during the video screening and presentations, while Writing and Reading are used to do the class activity and the homework. The incorporation of all four linguistic skills therefore makes it doable to tweak this lesson plan for students of different age and grade levels. Possibly by adding difficulty to the activities and to the manner of presenting themselves in their dream job costumes.
One could only assume that at the end of the day, the objectives of this lesson plan have been met and the students will have had a stronger want to realize their dream jobs or reconsider their choices with all the new information they got.

PRESENTATION: Christmas storytelling
Tumblr media
I have always been a storyteller. From directing features and short films back in college to my personal talent which is to overshare on social media. Naturally I was very excited (and quite competitive) upon hearing about our task to tell a Christmas story for Navidades 2019.
I had a partner named Chelsea. She is also a Filipina Auxiliar based in my school. We were assigned to some 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th grade classes which, looking back, was our initial challenge because our story choice should of course be something the different age groups would understand and appreciate. The last thing we didn’t want was to bore kids who are still learning the language we were going to use.
Tumblr media
Our story? was about a bear Santa Claus forgot and the things he did to get to Maddie, the owner of the gift. Apart from a powerpoint presentation as a visual aid, my partner and I agreed that the best way to tell our story was by roleplaying. We thought it was creative, effortful and was like going back to our roots as past students in the Philippines (who experienced plenty of roleplaying activities).
Tumblr media
It’s really not a competition but I like to think me and my partner aced this task and that our coordinator, the teachers and especially our students loved our presentation.
I’m really glad I get to tell stories here. It’s something my family and I would do whenever we’re together. And since this is the first Christmas I’m spending away from them, this experience is something I’ll pocket for now until I see them again.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Handling 2º Primaria students
Assigned grades & subjects?
For the school year 2019 - 2020, I am currently assigned to 2º Primaria. There are four different classes and all of them has about 25 students in class. I assist in teaching Social Science, Natural Science and Language. I do this on Mondays to Thursdays, from 9 to 2 in the afternoon.
This would be my first time Handling little kids.
My prior experience with teaching or mentoring include serving the student body who were the same age as me as a head of an organization in the university and working alongside school administration. I originally requested to have high school during the applications because I wasn’t too fond of kids.
But the kids at my school do pull a heartstring. They’re some seven or eight years olds just so full of life, love and laughter. They inspire me to be a better teacher everyday and challenge me to transform them into their best selves.
My teaching philosophies?
It’s good to keep in mind that at twenty, I’ve just moved out of university and plunged myself right into the work force. Which means I only have just enough experiences (and no, they’re not teaching experiences) to tell you about what I believe in. Case in point, joining the Auxiliar de Conversación program is just as much as to learn from my students and them from me because you learning is a never ending process and experience is the best teacher.
“The teacher has become the master of his former master.”
I also believe that teaching is more than a profession, it is a lifestyle, a devotion you have to keep doing until something blooms out of it. Until your students are better than you’ve ever been.
Personal teaching goals and learning objectives for students?
1. To help improve my students linguistic abilities that they may one day be able to use it for something important, for an emergency or maybe even for the most mundane things
2. To introduce and champion the Filipino culture to Spain, one of its major colonizers in history; to be seen as equals and be treated with respect and appreciation
3. To work in an environment that will help me grow and to meet new people who will show me new perspectives in life
“History has its eyes on you.” from Hamilton: The American Musical is a quote I live by. It’s a reminder that nothing here is promised and what we will be remembered for is up to us.
