I don’t understand how there’s no Black Widow movie. A little girl being taught to be a spy from childhood. Destroying her youth and innocence and learning to kill. Competing against 27 other girls to stay alive. Being pushed to the breaking point morally, physically, and emotionally. Seeing The Red Room forge her into a weapon. The beginning of her career - assassinating diplomats, manipulating prisoners of Russia, outsmarting SHIELD. Backstory to Drakov, Sal Paulo, the hospital fire, and Budapest. And then a rookie SHIELD agent has her in sight on his scopes. His finger is in the trigger, but he hesitates. She looks scared. She looks tired. She looks like a fighter. So, he brings her in, and takes her under his wing. From a child assassin to a Russian defector. And they could throw Bucky and Yelena in there, along with Clint and Fury, and maybe even a Peggy Carter/Dottie Underwood Red Room origin story.

Like, who heard that and went - ‘no, I’m gonna go with Spiderman for the third time, and this guy who can talk to ants’?!

Imaginary Conversations About Pretty Characters

Patrick Rothfuss: There. I think that's a pretty good protagonist.

Robin Hobb: Too pretty.

Rothfuss: What?

Hobb: Your character. He's awfully pretty. You should rough him up a bit.

Rothfuss: Well I cut up his back--

Hobb: That's pretty tame. How about having someone bite a huge chunk out of the back of his neck?

Rothfuss: W-what? Wait, someone BIT--

Hobb: Ooh, and hit him with arrows. And swords. And axes. And have someone split his skull so the hair grows back funny. Ha, you know, I once crippled this character for no good reason. Just straight-up destroyed his leg. And then later I made it, like, just a lot worse.

Rothfuss: I--

Hobb: And look at that gorgeous face. How about breaking his nose? Oh! And split the skin over his cheek. That'll leave a nice scar.

Rothfuss: Look, I poisoned him once. That's pretty good, right? He still sometimes tastes plums and can't really put a filter on his words.

Hobb: Oh, wow, that is pretty good. Poisoning him, well, just once. Yeah. I mean, you could also poison him so he has a debilitating disease causing seizures and constant trembling. But, yeah, tasting plums, that's good, too.

Rothfuss: ...

Hobb: ...

Rothfuss: You stay away from my characters.

Hobb: Yeah, fair enough.
