This is THE TRUTH I'm so glad I'm not the only one who read avos and was completely baffled by the fandoms perception of her. Needletail has always been unlikable to me, I cannot name a single redeeming quality about her. She was never "manipulated" by Darktail, she saw how horrific his actions were from day one (starving elders and kittens fighting over scraps of food! Which she willingly partook in btw because it was badass or whatever!) and intentionally sought him out.
People act like Needletail and Violetshines love for eachother was mutual but Needletail never once actually wanted to spend time with Violetshine (before Alderheart pressured it out of her, that is). Taking Violetkit was never about forming a bond or a sisterly relationship, it was about bettering her reputation and giving Shadowclan a place in "the prophecy". She NEVER cared about Violetkit unless it was of benefit to her. She was perfectly content leaving the poor kit in the nursery, neglected.
And go figure, the only point in which Needletail grows to feel an ounce of remorse is when her decisions come to bite her in the ass. When she realizes that she isn't the one in control anymore, and this mess she created will only put a bad image to HER name. She's no longer the she-cat who brought home Violetkit and involved Shadowclan in some spectacular prophecy, she's the she-cat who led a bunch of violent rogues to her home and indirectly killed a bunch of innocent people.
It only took for her to face the consequences for HER actions before she began to give a crap. And even then her "redemption" is fueled by nothing more than protecting her own conscious and self image. When we see her later in Starclan she's just as egotistical and selfish as ever.
okay i have reached needletail's death and suffice to say i'm disappointed with her nonexistent character arc and complete lack of dimension. so much wasted potential on her for fucking real. i feel so conflicted about her because i do think i could've actually liked her as a character if she was literally any amount better written but the way she exists in canon is just so flat and unappealing that it makes me strongly dislike her.
needletail had two character traits (rebellious + selfish) and a selfish, manipulative, take-without-return relationship with violetpaw—and absolutely no background, development, context, or conflict to justify any of it. her one singular "change" was just realizing Darktail Bad which i refuse to even call character development because it doesn't take any development of character to realize someone is bad once you have more information about them—it's clear that if she'd known how darktail acted prior to joining the kin, she never would've done it in the first place. ergo, no character development occurred to make her change her mind about it.
her sacrifice was meaningless because it was entirely out of character for her. she may have loved violetpaw to some degree, but at no point in their relationship did needletail make a single small sacrifice to her own comfort for violetpaw. she snuck out of camp with violetkit, sure, but needletail was sneaking out of camp anyway so she wasn't taking risks she wasn't already comfortable taking. she was a major reason why violetkit and twigkit were separated, she is the reason violetkit/paw got involved with the kin instead of going to be safe in thunderclan with her sister, etc. violetpaw got literally nothing in return for her love of needletail. so, back to the original point: needletail's sacrifice for violetpaw was a major, unprecedented shift in their dynamic. there was no leadup to it that showed she was starting to give more in the relationship in smaller ways that would've indicated she was becoming less selfish and more interested in a mutual relationship.
in my opinion, a better decision for her arc at that point would've been for her to listen to darktail and attempt to kill violetpaw. she hesitates, though, giving violetpaw a chance to run. needletail attempts to chase her down, but isn't fast enough, and darktail is interrupted by the attack on the kin's camp in riverclan and needletail skirts by under less suspicion since she did attempt to kill violetpaw.
i haven't read far past her death yet, but since she's dead canonically and there's nothing else left in her arc to work with, i'll offer a possibility for the continuation of this: eventually, she is reunited with violetpaw and claims that she never wanted to kill her and was just trying to help her escape and that they both made it out fine, so it's okay, right? and violetpaw, having been groomed by needletail's emotional manipulation since she was a kit, hesitantly forgives her. at that point, there would be time for needletail's character arc to continue, and for further conflict with violetpaw once she becomes a warrior and comes to realize all that needletail did to her. we could see needletail have an actual character arc in which violetshine eventually confronts her about their toxic relationship (and i want to be clear i'm speaking in a strictly platonic sense, in case that wasn't glaringly obvious), and needletail rejects the idea that she manipulated violetshine since she was a kit at first—then slowly realizes all that she did. but there are a ton of different roads her character could have taken if the sacrifice hadn't happened and this is just one potential path out of dozens.
i love these kinds of toxic relationships where one character is (potentially unknowingly) taking advantage of and manipulating a younger character who doesn't know better than to attend to the emotional needs of the older character. there's so much opportunity for conflict, betrayal, feelings of isolation within the relationship, recovering from trauma, realizing what exactly the older character did, eventually coming to be on equal standing when they're both mature adults and the older character having to face the consequences of what they've done. there was a lot of potential in their relationship and having needletail sacrifice herself out of nowhere did nothing but give a false idea of what their relationship looked like up to that point.
it would have also been majorly beneficial to give more background on how she came to be so opposed to living in the clans + following the rules besides just "idk she's just like that" and perhaps more details on why she so strongly desired a familial relationship with violetpaw (when she had two very much alive parents that she's never shown interacting with in the slightest?).
uhhh tl;dr i think i do actually like needletail as a character but the erins can only write a proper character arc like once in a blue moon and this was not one of those instances. justice for the narrative or whatever. these cats deserved better (or worse. in the characters' perspective at least.)

In defense of Brambleclaw
Bramble is, admittedly, a heavily flawed character. Not as in he is poorly written; I don't believe he is(in TNP, onwards, it gets all weird and muddy), but as in he is literally a character with many flaws. Regardless, he was always my favorite. Pre-Moonkitti's video, I think the majority of readers was relatively neutral towards him, but he's risen to being the single most hated character in the entire fandom. This is because of the interpretation that he is abusive towards Squirrelflight, including, Moonkitti alleges, in the TNP past what can be considered the author's 'messing up his character.' I recently reread TNP and came out with an entirely different perspective.
At the beginning of Midnight, Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw actively dislike each other. This makes sense, as they are written to be character foils. This goes beyond Brambleclaw being the son of the villain and Squirrelpaw being the daughter of the hero. Brambleclaw is strict, responsible, and restrained. We can assume this comes from his isolation in TPB where he has to stay on 'perfect' behavior because of the discrimination he faced as Tigerstar's son. We can also assume, this is where his defensiveness comes from. Anytime he is questioned or pressed by someone, he has a tendency to double down and recede into himself. Squirrelpaw is rebellious, reckless, and carefree. A lot of Brambleclaw's resentment towards her comes from the fact that he was never allowed to behave that way as an apprentice; undoubtedly, if he did, he would receive heightened suspicion and discrimination from his clanmates. It is established in Midnight that he wishes his sister had stayed in Thunderclan, while Firestar directly compares his distant relationship with Tawnypelt to Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw's incredibly close bond. He is envious of her and the 'privileges' she is afforded with her birthright. Aside from Brambleclaw's sentiments, it is just difficult for Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw to get along in the day-to-day clan environment. They are both stubborn and prideful, with opposite dispositions, a distaste for the other, and no incentive to get to know each other better.
When she forces her way onto the journey, Brambleclaw begrudgingly brings her along. Over the course of the journey, they begin to hold respect for each other's considerable abilities and talents, eventually evolving into a strong bond and sense of comradery as the only two Thunderclan cats of the group. Whilst he is initially very dismissive of her and Crowpaw as apprentices, he comes to value their opinions and input, and they come to respect his role as a de facto leader. They still bicker quite a bit, but it's more playful and light-hearted than anything else.
The conflict and abuse allegations come at the point where Brambeclaw figures out that Mothwing and Hawkfrost of Riverclan are his half-siblings. Brambleclaw, who'd previously disliked Hawkfrost for his aggressive personality, instead finds himself beginning to become fascinated with him. Before, it was all too easy to acknowledge Hawkfrost's thirst for power; now, given their kinship, it is something Brambleclaw is forced to acknowledge within himself, too. Hawkfrost wants to be deputy, then leader. Brambleclaw wants to be deputy, then leader. Hawkfrost is Tigerstar's son. Brambleclaw is Tigerstar's son. Up to this point, the only things Squirrelflight knows about Hawkfrost are that Leafpool doesn't like him( though she never told Squirrelflight precisely why for some reason) and that he wants to be deputy. Brambleclaw, acting defensively( as in character), accuses her of making assumptions based on his heritage, and Squirrelflight( rightfully) gets offended and storms off.
Yes, Squirrelflight is ultimately right, but there's no reason for her to think badly of Hawkfrost aside from instinct and trust in her sister's judgement. Brambleclaw is already established to be very defensive when he thinks he's being judged on his father's actions and given that he identifies with Hawkfrost, he is hurt that someone he deeply cares for is condemning someone for traits that are his own as well.
So this is where Brambleclaw's misconduct is supposed to have begun. According to the predominant fandom narrative, he ignored and mistreated her. While at points this is true, it's not really the entire story. Both Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw try to approach each other at different points and are ignored. Brambleclaw is hurt seeing Squirrelflight form a close bond with Ashfur, who clearly has romantic intentions towards her. Meanwhile, Squirrelflight watches Brambleclaw get closer and closer to Hawkfrost and, in turn, his father( and she DOES genuinely think to herself at several points that he might be dangerous). Given that we see this through both of their perspectives there's little guesswork to be done here. We see Brambleclaw's jealousy towards Squirrelflight resurface, particularly when she interacts with Firestar or Leafpool. Brambleclaw wants a close bond with a sibling he can relate to. Brambleclaw wants to be proud of his family heritage. Why shouldn't he be allowed to have those things? Meanwhile, Squirrelflight is wondering why he's suddenly made a 180. The problem here is a lack of communication, given how different their backgrounds are and both character's already established stubbornness and refusal to admit that they're in the wrong, this makes perfect sense.
Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw, of course, get back together post-badger attack. In Squirrelflight's darkest hour, when Leafpool runs off with Crowfeather, Brambleclaw is there in a heartbeat, helping her search and supporting her. When the badger attack comes, they instinctively fall together, protect each other, and form plans, as they did on the Great Journey. This is when they realize how much they really trust each other and how much they mean to each other. And so, they get back together. I don't much understand the argument that Brambleclaw's 'silence' was a manipulation tactic, though I do get that some people simply don't like their relationship/dynamic, which is totally fine! Anyway, I think Brambleclaw is a far more interesting character than people give him credit for. He's passionate, defensive, stubborn, and willfully ignorant at points, but he has a real gift for leadership and diplomacy. He's also noble at heart and ends up doing the right thing in the end. I could say a lot more about him. I think he's a little too often defined by his relationship to Squirrelflight/the drama with the three( this goes vice versa for Squirrelflight btw) and isn't really acknowledged for his accomplishments and actually super complicated and interesting relationship with Hawkfrost. I could probably expand more on this but let me know what ya'll think.

Onggg okay I love firestar and sandstorm and this might be too long for a comment
Sandstorm first and foremost.. Is one of the best handled female characters in the entire series to me. I really think that's what I love the most about her.
More specifically: I mean in the sense that the writers do not constantly project traumatic, harmful, or mysogynistic plotlines / ideas on to her.
I have never considered some people might find Sandstorm to be "two-dimensional", but if I had to guess, she might just... Not be tragic enough(?) for the community to take real interest in her. (Some of the most popular female characters... Bluestar, Yellowfang, Squirrelflight, Leafpool, etc... All have expirienced significant trauma + taken the brunt of the writers mysogynistic choices... which is why I assume this...)
My point being I love Sandstorm for the simple fact that she's a good character, with no horrific backstory attached. She's treated with the respect she deserves Nevertheless. She's allowed to have her flaws, and she's allowed to grow in spite of them. She's allowed her sharp tongue and her individuality. She's allowed to beef with her husband and hold her own opinion without it becoming a spectacle, and even when she isn't right, she's never mistreated for it. She's allowed her emotions. She's allowed to be happy and start her own family. She's essentially a well-respected, hard working warrior, who is allowed to live the life she deserves. I love it!
Truthfully... Sandstorm feels like a breath of fresh air, and it's a lot of the other female characters who feel one in the same to me; their whole lives are built from grief and/or tragedy, if not for some aspect of being a she-cat, than just for the simple sake of it. They have to endure something horrible just to, perhaps, be treated with respect by the writers, or with interest by the community. And as much as I ADORE these characters, it does make me sad that, going through something horrible becomes essentially the core part of their character... And I guess Squirrelflight specifically is the main example. The writers seem to never allow her to move past the next horrific life event and it's utterly depressing. Even the fandom never really speaks of her beyond the horrible things she's been put through.
Well anyways I've been rambling and I don't thing I've a actually made a point here. I guess I just love Sandstorm because she's allowed to be happy. And she's allowed to be strong. Her strength is never showcased through her suffering. She's a wonderful warrior, mate, and mother, and she's acknowledged for it. She never has to struggle to be treated the way she deserves. She doesn't make me sad essentially LOL
Edit: also want to add that I LOVE her in firestars quest especially... her relationship with firestar is perfect there. There's conflict, but it never feels *toxic*. Throughout the book Sandstorm feels insecure of her mates bond with Spottedleaf, yet it's never made out to be... irrational of her? As you would expect of the newer arcs. Not only that, but Firestar never gets upset with her for it. He doesn't get mad or defensive. Instead he is confused, and he tells Sandstorm, "I love you, only you, and I want to spend my life with you, and im sorry I ever made you doubt that" essentially. I just UGHHHH I LOVE THEM!!!!!
hey can ppl reblog/reply to this with reasons you love sandstorm. like uh firestar is my all time favourite character so i rly want to like sandstorm cos she is his wife. um i just dont rly see anything in her, just a 2d love interest in the first arc who literally couldve been any other cat. like what moonkitti says when "oh cinderpelt could have told fireheart that it was longtail that is into him and he would have reacted the same" its been a while since ive read the books so uh.... share some moments/ headcanons/ reasons why you like her!! :]

I love Matilda because it's a story about a child who sees injustice around her and gets mad about it and questions why things aren't fair, and instead of the ending being that she learns how the world works and that life isn't fair, she catapults one of the adults who abused her out of a building with her mind

MRAs: think they're being oppressed because women won't have sex with them
Trans "MRAs": We have difficulties accessing healthcare, housing, and welfare supports, also we have a high rate of corrective rape done to our community, and much of the violence enacted on us goes uncounted because we're misgendered in our deaths. Also everytime we try to talk about these issues the rest of the queer community invents a new slur for us? Maybe we should come together as a community and figure out how to fix this.
Some Fuckin Genius: these two things are the same actually

You’re honestly one of the most approachable transandrophobia bloggers I know.
One thing I’d like to discuss about is that a lot of the transandrophobia is being spearheaded by white trans women.
It shows a lot that whiteness is still everreaching even onto gender. There’s BIPOC trans people (especially BIPOC transmascs) that get harassed and shut down by these large white trans women bloggers. One time I saw one of them say “that is moot” to intersex people not being including on discussions about AFAB trans women.
It’s a very important concept that people are aware that white women hold up racist structures, it’s the same with the big white trans women on this site I’ve noticed. Due to their whiteness they do not actually know intersectionality and assume their gender is the sole reason of oppression. That white concepts of gender, sexuality, and disability are a truth and applied to everything.
I’ve been vocal about being a BIPOC transfemme, and the blatant bigotry and cruelty from the big white transfemme bloggers just ring it bad for me. My culture taught me kindness and patience, so seeing this popular rise in aggression and entitlement in transfemme spaces has rendered them quite unsafe for the people they supposedly protect like me.
The best conclusion I have for this is that the rise in transandrophobia has ties to racism, ableism, inter sexism much more. I want my discussions of trans experience such as both transmisogyny and transandrophobia to be free from other pre dispositioned bigotry. That as a transfemme someone who they claim to protect, that the whole wider trans community needs to do better.
Take care and I hope your day is wonderful
Thank you, I appreciate your analysis here! The transfems I know have also pointed out that a lot of it seems to be coming from predstrogen’s very white online trans women social sphere. It seems like transfems of color on here also have strong criticisms of that group’s behavior, including acting like being a transfem inherently means you have all the best takes on oppression. I hope we can get some better, more intersectional perspectives in the conversation.

Laios is built like a fucking professional wrestler. He isn't like, super chiseled or anything but he does not have an "average" body, he his built like someone who does a LOT of physical effort and training.

I love it when people try to claim representation in fiction is being taken “too far” to the point where it’s no believable. They’re like:
“What’s next, a mixed-race immigrant on the autism spectrum?” Hi, my name is Rachel, also known as Rachna, and I’m a mixed-race immigrant on the autism spectrum.
“What’s next, a transgender Latino man with chronic pain?” What, you mean my former colleague, Marco?
“What’s next, a Black Jewish lesbian?” Bitch, I know I three Black Jewish lesbians, WHAT’S YOUR FUCKING POINT?

The "trans men have level 100 infinite privilege" mindset always confuses me because I feel like it's rooted in this idea that ALL transmascs pass, or even decide to medically transition in the first place. Which literally is not the case. It just feels like people projecting stereotypes + their general disdain for cis dudes onto other trans people for like 0 reason honestly. Which quiet frankly I thought we realized was stupid 6 years ago
Like im not sure if acknowledging this makes people mad but. Trans men are not cis men!!!?? Whatever harms women DOES, inherently, harm us. I'm sorry to say it but I will never be able to separate myself from my birth sex. You think the government doesn't affect me? Reproductive laws? Healthcare ?? I'm still legally female and I still pass for a lady 90% of the time. And I will for a LONG time because, surprise, HRT can take years to reach full effect as its literally a second puberty.
It genuinely baffles me because you would think other trans folk would know better at this point? Don't you guys know how diverse trans people are? How diverse ones transition can be???? How diverse the literal affects of HRT itself can present from person to person??? Not every transmasc is going to look like Chris Pratt after 5 months on HRT. Most won't, even after a year or two. The community of being against binary boxes and stereotypes, constantly trying to fit people into binary boxes and stereotypes. And simply for the sake of undermining the issues they face! Insanity
And I mean at the end of the day I'm trans as hell so transphobia is going to effect me no matter what, even if I DID pass for cis. One bad anti-trans law and we are ALL done for. So the beef makes 0 sense to me. It's just surface level performative anger. And it solves nothing it just puts others down.
I think the funniest part about it to me tho, is that I can always tell the people saying that bs are white as all hell. They never EVER consider the poc within their own community, and how race can play a part in one's transition and subsequent oppression. You can just tell that their mindset is rooted in the idea of all transmascs magically morphing into white middle aged men overnight... erm who cares about poc / disabled trans folk amirite guys.....
