again, already? the pain returned swifter than anticipated. whatever remedies she was offering were clearly not enough. lips drew tight & brow tensed, but the doctor offered a dutiful nod.  ❛ here, sit. ❜

Ching Shih, Pirate Queen of China, captain of the Red Flag Fleet. 1775-1844 CE
a former pirate who once terrorized the China Seas during the Jiaqing Emperor period of the Qing dynasty in the early 19th century. She commanded over 300 junks (traditional Chinese sailing ships) manned by 20,000 to 40,000 pirates: 71—men, women, and even children. She entered into conflict with the major nations, such as the British Empire, the Portuguese Empire, and the Qing dynasty.
Ching Shih and her crew’s exploits had since been featured in numerous books, novels, video games, and films about piracy, pirates and their way of life in China as well as worldwide. She is widely considered to be the most successful pirate in history, based on the fact that she commanded the largest crew ever assembled, and that she died in her own bed as a free woman.
Ching Shih started the task of uniting the fleet by issuing a code of laws, First, anyone giving their own orders (ones that did not come down from Ching Shih) or disobeying those of a superior was beheaded on the spot.
Second, no one was to steal from the public fund or any villagers that supplied the pirates.
Third, all goods taken as booty had to be presented for group inspection. The booty was registered by a purser and then distributed by the fleet leader. The original seizer received twenty percent and the rest was placed into the public fund.
Fourth, actual money was turned over to the squadron leader, who only gave a small amount back to the seizer, so the rest could be used to purchase supplies for unsuccessful ships.According to Philip Maughan, the punishment for a first-time offense of withholding booty was severe whipping of the back. Large amounts of withheld treasure or subsequent offenses carried the death penalty.
Ching Shih’s code had special rules for female captives. Standard practice was to release women, but J.L. Turner witnessed differently. Usually the pirates made their most beautiful captives their concubines or wives. If a pirate took a wife he had to be faithful to her. The ones deemed unattractive were released and any remaining were ransomed. Pirates that raped female captives were put to death, but if pirates had consensual sex with captives, the pirate was beheaded and the woman he was with had cannonballs attached to her legs and was thrown over the side of the boat. 29 Violations of other parts of the code were punished with flogging, clapping in irons, or quartering.

her brother is everything to her,  as once overheard from the guards around her makeshift lab,  she’d do anything for him.  wen qing presents herself as impassive & invulnerable to his intentional provocation,  but it’s a response he has been faced with too often to simply assume his poison’s no longer as potent as it used to be.  ( & maybe somewhere on her face,  if he dared look closer,  he might notice a trace of tightened jaw                     tongue bitten between her teeth so she doesn’t say something that’d cost her it. )
“ of course. ”  it’s no novelty that xue yang hasn’t once felt responsible for the open wounds left in his wake & prefers to have others tackle the repercussions,  making apologies & bowing their heads in his place.  he’s unashamedly reckless in speaking to her as he swirls the tea in small circles,  his eyes pleased,  his expression beaming with a kind of boyish smugness which is   – no doubt –   warranted.   [ … ]   if there’s one thing he’s aware of,  it’s his worth & unmatched talent that compelled even the most arrogant of sect leaders to regard him with appreciation.  “ luckily they need my knowledge,  & they only have to pay a small price for it. ”  so he’s going to exploit his hard-earned rights for as long as he is to wear the sparks-amidst-snow motif on his chest.
in spite of his infamous disregard for the severity of any risk or even death,  he does take an added moment to look into the crucible :  if it hasn’t had any effect on him   – or her –   from the smell alone,  there’s little that could happen now.  xue yang therefore chooses to trust his intuition & the fact she is surely going to follow closely behind him if it turns out he was wrong.  still seated on her work desk,  he downs the mixture,  emits a satisfied hum at being hit with an odd,  saccharine aftertaste through that of medicine.  EXPECTED,  THE LATTER.  he then leans down to defiantly whisper in her ear as he places the emptied cup down.  “ you got more? ”
if she had been a bit more careless, a scoff would had escaped at such a blithe response. what knowledge of his was so desperately needed to go to such lengths? the howls of horror that filled the corridors & corners of her mind at most hours. a small price? yes, of course. the pain of others was often such a slight consideration, but wen qing wonders if the crazed man before her would still deem the weight so inconsequential if it were his own-
steam billows from the small crucible, near boiling liquid threatening to spill from it’s lips, his expression with all the airs of self-satisfaction & elation of a child eyeing up a prize at some silly market game stall... she decides quickly that perhaps he would.
her gaze remains on him as he considers the cup carefully before tipping it past his lips. a silent curse rattles about her mind, its defiance still steadfast despite her outwardly placid demeanor. she does not flinch at his proximity, nor his words, although the chill that traces her spine is undeniable. she has seen life & death & demon & ghosts & there is rarely a thing to rattle the doctor, but the cultivator before her comes a shade close.
❛ no. ❜  she states firmly, lifting the cup and returning it to the small flame. her attention returns to her work as she begins again, dutifully measuring out the portions she’d dictated in her notes prior to being so inconvenienced. her station had limits as did her rebellion, but she would do her damnedest not to give into whatever twisted pleasures her overseer so desperately desired. she could feign the pawn well, no stranger to the indulgences of madmen. if he wished to watch her squirm at his whim, he would have to pin her to a table like the rest of his subjects.  ❛ not for you. ❜

i will never stop coming back to this bc just IMAGINE wq going to lxc to aide in her quest for finding lwj the best birthday present or lwj&wwx the best anniversary gift she can conjure up so she spends months working on something & when the time comes to finally gift it she has this endearingly proud little smile on her features as she presents it & lxc just is looking fondly at her. tears.... tears.
i think my favorite part about my lan furen au with cher is that wq is literally married to one of the kindest, most skilled, voted most attractive cultivators ever & she spends all her time studying in the library with his gay brother.

I always get emotional when wen ning says ‘my sister, the best doctor in qishan wen, wen qing!’ because. yes. she is the best doctor. and him mentioning her, in that moment, in that way, really shows the impact she has and how important she is to not only wen ning but also Wei Wuxian and jiang Cheng. Like wen ning is so proud of her. He loves her so much. He misses her so much. And the simple declaration of her skills and her importance to so many of the characters really shows it
