Theodora:

“I meant ‘what’s going on’ as in ‘why are you here at the Yule Ball instead of Mr. Crouch’,” Theo clarified. “I know you work for the Ministry, but I’d have thought that they’d send someone more senior if Mr. Crouch couldn’t make it. No slight against you, of course, but you have only been working in Mr. Crouch’s department for six months. You’re still quite new.”

At the end of last year, Theo had offered to put Percy in touch with her father, who had worked in the Department of International Magical Cooperation for decades and who would have been able to put in a good word for Percy, but Percy had declined. For Theo, who had always gotten along well with the older student, this had come as something of a shock, and she still didn’t really understand why Percy hadn’t accepted the help. Connections were there to be used, after all, and being sorted into Slytherin had given Percy the opportunity to build connections he never would have managed had he gone to Gryffindor with the rest of his siblings.

Truth be told, she hadn’t been able to help feeling a little miffed.

But if Percy had been sent to an official Triwizard Tournament event in place of his boss, he must be climbing the ladder quickly. That was good to know. Percy had ambitions, and he’d worked hard for years. He deserved some success. Still, it was a curious choice on the part of the Ministry.

…Right. That made sense. Of course, he still felt the urge to get even more defensive at the mention of his position; though he knew he had no need, Theodora wasn't like his father and brothers who made snide remarks every now and then about his job and other things - he had inherited his mother's temper. Nevertheless, Percy tamped down on those feelings; Theodora was someone he could call a friend, even though their friendship had cooled a bit since he had turned down her offer for help at the end of his last year. He had no doubt that she wasn't trying to stir up trouble.

❝ Yes, well as I am his personal assistant and I was with him throughout the planning phase of the tournament- ❞ This was a lie. He had been promoted to personal assistant only after the World Cup, and even though he had known about the tournament, he had mostly stuck to his own work on the appalling conditions of cauldron thickness and the ongoing efforts to standardise it. Not that Theo needed to know that, it would only lead to more questions that he couldn't answer. Instead, he reached for the lie had had been given via Owl. ❝ Mr. Crouch has fallen ill due to the stress of the debacle at the World Cup as well as the planning of the Tri-Wizarding Tournament and has requested that I take his place. ❞

Only part of that last bit was true. Originally he had been owled by Mr. Crouch and given directions to follow about what to do with the whole Tri-Wizarding Tournament that his boss was a judge for. And of course, Percy had been overjoyed with the added responsibility, thinking that this was a sign that his boss respected him...  Until all common sense hit him and he realised that it was far too suspicious that his boss fell so sick that he couldn't even be seen face to face. So Percy had made mention of it to a few of the lower level aurors he had acquainted himself with ( it always important to have some friends in a multiple sections of the law ); he had just wanted to send a small inquiry to Mr. Crouch's home.

Instead he had been told his boss was missing and he was to not show any signs that something was wrong while the aurors investigated. And that he was a suspect! Him! It was absurd, if you asked him     honestly, he looked up to Mr. Crouch, despite what others said about the older man. The idea that he would do something to his own boss was insanity. And yet, he let none of that play on his face as he asked, ❝ What about you? What are you doing here? I admit, I'm surprised to find you here - I figured you might take the time to relax in what I'm sure would be relative silence what with Malfoy being here. ❞

But unnecessary trouble had a bad habit of existing in the same spaces as him         especially as of late and the whole mess of Mr. Crouch's surprise exit at work ( oh come now percy, he tells himself, your boss has gone missing and without the people at your back, it'd be suspect that you were the one to do it ) was just the most recent trouble. Not that that was what was going on; at least, it wasn't the one thing he was thinking of. Well only a little. But he wasn't going to talk about it. Honestly, he wasn't even sure he could speak about it.

[ HOPE ]:     just as the receiver is about to lose hope in ever finding the sender again, a message or clue of some kind is discovered that essentially guarantees that the sender is still alive, restoring the receiver’s hope once more.

[ CLING ]:     having finally been reunited, the sender pulls the receiver into a tight, overwhelmingly relieved embrace, clinging to them and burying their face in their shoulder. the whole deal. make it EMOTIONAL–

[ TEARS ]:     having finally found the receiver, or having finally been found by the receiver, the sender breaks down in tears of relief, fear, and many other emotions as they officially reunite.

[ SACRIFICE ]:     knowing that the circumstances only allow one of them to survive, the sender sacrifices their life in order to guarantee the receiver’s survival and safety.
