There are hardly any female werewolves because they break all the classic rules of femininity. They force you to confront female violence, strength, size, grotesqueness and uncontrollability. Historically female shapeshifters always shift into something dangerous (snake) or sleek (cat) or dainty (bird) but female werewolves ignore the masculine gaze completely. They're distorted beasts that have no ulterior motive except to destroy. Nothing about them is nurturing or modest. They're the opposite of what a woman "should be." Their omission from pop culture is not an accident.

Making your body a masterpiece is not an easy task. It takes a lifetime of work to craft a masterpiece. Even then you may not be satisfied, but that’s not the goal: the goal of the artwork is to step back, to decide you are finished. Content.

“Her drama was a drama not of heaviness but of lightness. What fell to her lot was not the burden but the unbearable lightness of being.” - Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

“I wonder, writing this, if what I’m after in art is a series of moods or textures. Perhaps that’s all writing is now. A way to exist and process existence.”
— Kate Zambreno, Drifts: A Novel (Penguin, May 19, 2020)

JOMP BPC / This month’s favorite
I’ve only read one book this month, but I’ve also been listening to the new Audible production of The Sandman and that’s lovely.
