idk where to put this so im putting this here, the reason male storytellers repeatedly create queer coded mlm relationships in their media with absolutely no intention is rooted a lot in misogyny. this is a quote thats been shared around a lot online recently from marilyn frye’s “the politics of reality”:

“All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex. Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving.”

i have a lot to say about how its a bit irresponsible to dust off homophobic straight men as being closeted gay men, but this quote is 100% true. straight male culture views romance as something that is almost exclusively physical because they do not truly view women as people with thoughts and feelings, people they can build genuine connections to. but they view men that way. queer people like me understand romance as something intimate and special both physically and emotionally, and we treat our partners accordingly. so when straight male writers write relationships between two male friends, they don’t understand how it could be read as something romantic because they are expressing their own passions for the men in their life, but they dont see them romantically. for the rest of us, its very obviously gay because of how much emotional connection that transcends friendship there is between these characters. they dont think its gay until they kiss, which leads to a lot of unintentional (though sometimes later intentional bc they realize they can profit) queerbaiting.

Dear Avatar fandom

Please can we stop refering to Zuko's eyes as 'good' and 'bad' in fics. What he actually has is a 'seeing eye' and a 'blind eye'. There is nothing inherently bad about a blind eye.

Negative language towards disability is ridiculously common in our ableist society. I know this community is often very good at writing disabled characters, and people mean no ill intent with this language, but please consider the words you use and their connotations.

This is not a call out, nor an attack, and it is not targeted at anyone specifically. I am just someone in the disabled community asking you to please think about why you might consider a blind eye to be bad, especially in a fandom with a canon blind character.

HEY SO SORRY I SAW THIS LATE ive been busy with graduation and all, but i wanted to make this a whole post bc i definitely dont wanna give the wrong idea on my post abt the trans smellerbee hc coming from brykes transphobic jokes. i LOVE trans hcs and i think smellerbee being trans is great, imo all the freedom fighters are queer in some way bc ofc they are. i cant speak for the entire trans community but my personal beef w the popularity of this hc and popular trans hcs in general is they focus solely on “evidence” present in the media rather than how being trans impacts their character, like what i was saying in my katara post. theres nothing wrong with pointing out dialogue from smellerbee that could point to her being trans, or even more popular hcs like dipper from gravity falls, but the obsession with pointing out a characters anatomy or behavior as if you can clock a trans person just from looking at them is pretty ignorant in general.

i wont even say whether or not cis people can hc her as trans or not, but trans hcs coming from cis people in general is weird to me for the reasons above. they arent bringing anything interesting to the table and are often working on their own internal ideas of what a trans person “looks like” and that can lead to a lot of ignorant shit. when transfem hcs are a scarce as they are because people treat transmascs with more dignity and respect than transfems, to have one of the most popular hcs out there be based solely on transphobia in the show, kinda hurts to see! kinda feels bad! and thats usually perpetuated by cis ppl creating trans hcs to look woke

basically, my opinion is leave the trans content to trans people themselves and allow trans people to hc characters however they want. if you see a trans person very attached to the trans smellerbee hc, dont try and yell at them bc brykes the ones writing transphobic shit. at the end of the day hcs are not canon so it doesnt matter, but we should call out creators for trying to get away with having a “trans coded” character when their first intention was just to be transphobic for comedy
